Archetypal Literary Criticism on the Legend of Marinduque Ninestle N. Bandilla
Adviser: Mrs. Cherie Ann M. Luna
Abstract
This study aimed to determine the meaning of different symbols, images, characters, and theme present in the Legend of Marinduque retold by Alfonso P. Santos. It also aimed to identify how these representations characterize the culture of Marinduque and in what category of Frye’s framework does the Legend of Marinduque belong. This study was descriptive type of research. A questionnaire was used by five (5) AB English students in analyzing the corpus. Their answers validated the analysis made by the researcher. This researcher used a corpus in the study and focused on the basic personified or concretized recurring images, symbols, characters and theme present in the Legend of Marinduque. Based on the findings, the Legend of Marinduque is in the context of romance. For Frye, romance is focused on the conflict between the hero and the villain. The hero on this legend is Duque because of his positive traits and Marin is considered as a shrew because she is a woman that would not conform to the demand of her society. The king, Maring’s father, is the villain on the legend because of his actions. The culture of Marinduque way back then was also shown in the legend which features the concept of the arranged marriage in the religious trait of the Marinduqueùo. Based on the analysis, archetypal literary criticism is used to determine the cultural background of the province of Marinduque based on the symbols, characters, images and themes that were found in The Legend of Marinduque and may be analyzed using other types of literary approaches to have a deeper understanding on it.

The design is a descriptive design using a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Quantitaive research was used to analyze the signifier and signified meanings of the messages of the semiotic signs as interpreted by the respondents. Qualitative analysis was applied in determining how the respondents identified by the signifier and signified meanings and also whether the historical or cultural aspects of Mogpog were embodied in the messages brought to the readers. Twenty- seven (27) respondents were gathered to determine the signifier meanings towards the signified meanings. The results showed that the texts and images in the Mogpog Tourism Brochure are considered semiotic signs. However, some of the signifier meanings were not exactly the signifier meaning as represented by the semiotic signs but by what the respondents thought of or perceived as meanings that may be associated with the texts and images. This study also revealed that some readers of the brochure accepted that texts and images in the brochure were included in it for these are significant to the culture and history of Mogpog. Based on these results, some of the signifier meanings of the signs in the brochure are the same as the signified meanings. Adviser: Mrs. Cherie Ann M. Luna
Abstract
This study aimed to examine the song text of Saint Helena and Formation of the Cross text using stylistic analysis. The study is significant for the preservation of the literary pieces. The texts were analyzed it in terms of lexical category, phonological features with an extended analysis on the meaning of the text and other devices. The study sought to answer the following questions: (1) In which barangay are these songs originally used. (2) What are the noticeable features in terms of lexical and phonological level of the song? (3) What stylistic elements (literary and linguistic devices) could be found in Saint Helena and Formation of the cross song? and (4) How do these features influence the meaning of the text? The method used was partly derived from the checklist of Geoffrey Leech and Mick Short. The study also used questionnaire and interview to validate the analysis of the researcher. The Santacruzan wherein these songs were previously used is found to be practiced in Baragay Tugos, Barangay Duyay, Boac, Marinduque. Presently, it is still practiced in Barangay Cawit and Barangay Caganhao. In this lexical category, noun was found out to be the grammatical class mostly used in the song text, second is the adjective, third is the verb which is more dynamic than stative, and the least used is the adverb. In terms of the phonological level, different rhyme patterns were found. Alliteration and repetition are the rhyming devices that are used. Different suprasegments in Filipino were noticed, once the pitch, stress and the length are changed, meaning would be affected. There was also the use of figure of speech – the metaphors. The tradition is not just a mere celebration about the Finding of the Cross but also a reminder that everyone must keep the honor and keep the faith to the Almighty God.

This study employed the descriptive method and textual analysis to analyze the language of putong. The subjects of the study are the old and contemporary versions of Boac’s putong. An interview with the singers of putong and other persons involved was conducted to validate the interpretation and analysis of the researcher. Based on the interview and the interpretation of the researcher, the difference in language affected the meaning of the song. The language of the old version varied from that of the contemporary version such that the old terms carry a deeper or different meaning or a changed expression while the contemporary version carries a narrowed meaning and can be easily understood by the readers. From the results gathered by the researcher, it shows that language tend to be greatly affected by how people use it. Time and the environment of the generation today were reasons why there has been differences in terms or expressions used in the lyrics of the putong song. Language is dynamic, it evolves or changes overtime like the generation of people. But despite the differences, the old version of putong exists because of the people who still believe that the old version of putong carries the tradition and culture of Marinduque.

Adviser: Dr. Julieta L. Go
Abstract
The main objective of this study is to determine the farmers’ language choice on the medium used of ATI-MIMAROPA speakers as basis for improvement of their extension seminars. The study used a qualitative-quantitative research method to assess the language preference of farmer-participation on the language used by the speakers of ATIMIMAROPA. The subjects of this study were the farmers identified by Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) who participated and attended ATI-MIMAROPA’s last extension seminar on Organic Agriculture. Two sets of questionnaires were used in the study. The findings of the study revealed that there were three languages that were commonly used by the ATIMIMAROPA speakers---English, Filipino and Taglish. Majority of the respondents preferred Taglish as the medium of communication by ATI-MIMAROPA speakers over English and Filipino but the essay written test given to them showed that they express better their knowledge in Filipino than the other language; it only means that Filipino language is the best generator of knowledge. The study also presented a proposed, an interview to improve extension seminars of ATI-MIMAROPA. The null hypothesis, there is no significant difference on the knowledge generated when the three language (English, Filipino and Taglish) are used, was rejected; it means that choice is not always the best generator of knowledge.

Adviser: Mrs. Rosalinda M. Nuñez
Abstract
The main objective of this study is to investigate, examine and analyse the Life of Julia Hidalgo u Maano known as a local mystic Inang Uyang. The study used a descripted research methodology to assess the history of Julia Hidalgo. This was correlated with Our Lady of Assumption by the faithful. The study revealed that because of her, being virtuous person, she was able to encourage and influence many people. That is why they would always sponsor the mass or even during the feast of Boac. When the number of the people Inang Uyang has inspired with her religiousness became great in number, they built in a group in the year 1954 known as the Assumption in which Inang Uyang was the propagate. In the same year, the feast of Assumption started. The study also revealed that, there is a common misconception about the saying or as it is called upon—as the Feast, should supposedly be called the, “Pa-piyesta ni Inanf Uyang” and not the “Feast of Inang Uyang”. A possible cause that made it erroneous might be because of the continuous passing of knowledge only through mouth, causing misconception of the background information already known. The study recommended that Life of Julia Hidalgo y Maaño may have printed documented files which can raise the awareness about her as well as the feast and understanding about the relationship between the feast of Our Lady of assumption and Julia Hidalgo may enlighten the minds of new generation of people unaware of their affiliation.

Traditional Mañanita Song: A Stylistic Analysis Pamela Mae R. Mislang
Adviser: Dr. Joy S. Montejo
Abstract
This thesis is a literary analysis that reviews comprehension using the delimited checklist of Geoffrey Leech and Mick Short on the adaptation of the cultural practice and the selected song incorporated in Mañanita to fully understand and appreciate artistic works in literature. The distinct cultural song of Mañanita in Boac, Marinduque was subjected to a Stylistic analysis in order to identify the stylistic elements that could be found in the song to recognize the influence of its elements and the conveyed meaning based on the content and context of the song. Given that the Scholars regarded that “No language is a readily identifiable object in reality that can be isolated and examined,” then, language can become a barrier to successful communication especially if a person in the society chooses to disregard certain of its rules. Therefore, this paper illustrates how discourse is used on inferring the context of the song “How beautiful is the morning” to essentially address the language in context since it can display social matters specifically the culture in rural and city life. Thus, consideration of the lexis, the context of the situation and the discourse was applied in the study. Results of data analysis revealed that most of the respondents comprehended Mañanita as a cultural birthday song usually played at serenades for loved ones in the early morning hours. While minority discloses that it is dedicated to a child during baptism at the sacramental fountain.

Abstract This research entitled “Love Letter Analysis Through Functions of Language: Implication to Communicative English” aimed to determine the knowledge on analysis of selected love letters of AB- English IV students enrolled in the academic year 2017-2018. Specifically, this research was conducted to analyze love letters as to Expository, Persuasive, Narrative and Descriptive and to analyze the types of writing through Michael Halliday’s seven functions of language. The respondents of this study were the thirty-two (32) fourth year students of Bachelor of Arts in English who took literary criticism in academic year 2016-2017. Purposive sampling was used in this study to make use of all the data efficiently. The respondents were selected based on the judgment of who has best quality in answering the specific questions of the research. Also, an expertise from a professional was sought to have a standard analysis for each letter classified as to the types and writing and analyzed through language functions. The researcher provided four love letters from Found Magazine. Found Magazine, published in December 2015, was created by Davy Rothbart and Jason Bitner. Each selected letters from this magazine have standard analysis from the expert as to the four types of writing (Expository, Persuasive, Narrative and Declarative) and Halliday’s (1975) Functions of Language. This study found out that the perception of students on the classification of love letters as to the types of writing and functions of language closely corresponds with the expert’s analysis. Some differences on their analysis were found, revealing that most of the students need to gain more exposure to language functions. Also, from the discussion, specific language functions can be observed in the four letters classified as narrative, persuasive, descriptive and expository. It can be concluded that the students were able to recognize how language functions are used in these written texts. Furthermore, with functions of language, teaching and learning will be more interesting and meaningful. SLA Reseach Colloquium
