Book of Abstracts
Preface This book is a compilation of research abstracts produced by BS Social Work students through Academic years 2016 and 2017. This marks the transition from School of Community and Health Care (SCHC) back to School of Allied Medicine. Likewise, during the same period, School of Arts Sciences (SAS) became known as School of Liberal Arts (SLA) in 2016.
There were 14 abstracts in 2016 and 11 abstracts in 2017 which round-up the last three batches of BSSW graduates.The first batch of BS Social Work graduates focused on vulnerable and marginalized sectors in Marinduque society. While the second batch of BSSW graduates feature social policies and its implementation. And the most recent batch of Social Work graduates revolved around social research and methodologies.
This particular output is a step forward incorporating the local, regional and national research and development agenda.

Causes and Effects of Unexpected Pregnancy among College Students in Marinduque State College

May Anne C. Bañaga Thesis Adviser The aim of the study is to determine the causes and effects of unexpected pregnancy on the selected students of Marinduque State College. A descriptive type of research design was used. A self-constructed questionnaire was utilized by the researcher in gathering the data. The respondents of this study were the selected 40 college students who are currently enrolled in Marinduque State College who experienced unexpected pregnancy. Frequency, a percentage and weighted mean were used in the treatment and presentation of the data. A self-constructed survey questionnaire was used by the research in data gathering. It is divided into five parts namely: respondent’s demographic profile, economic conditions, causes of unexpected pregnancy, effects of unexpected pregnancy, and the problems they encountered. The results revealed that majority of the respondents belong to age group of 22-26 years old, married and fourth year college. Respondents said that they can continue their studies after experiencing unexpected pregnancy by the help of their guardians and still relies on them. The causes of unexpected pregnancy where lack of knowledge about sex and lack of guidance from their parents. Majority of the respondents said that they did not suffer any bad effects of the unexpected pregnancy in their present life even though they got pregnant at their early age. Based on the findings, the following recommendations are; 1) starting a conversation about sex early and often may prove beneficial. Encourages parents to talk early and become “ask able” parents (let the child know that they can ask you anything); 2) most of the respondents answered that they have lack of knowledge about sex. The school as the second home the teacher must teach the students about the importance of sex education and how to act about sex; 3) for the future researcher, they may conduct similar study in other school to have differ understanding in experiencing early pregnancy. May Anne C. Baùaga Thesis Adviser This descriptive study aimed to know the economic, social and cultural condition of the selected residents of BArangay Yook, Buenavista, Marinduque. The respondents of this study were the 208 in every third household in Yook, Buenavista, Marinduque. Solvin’s formula was utilized to determine the sample size while respondents were chosen through random sampling technique. The instrument used in this research is a self-constructed survey questionnaires and is divided into four parts which are: demographic and socio-economic status of the respondents, status of Barangay Yook,. Frequently, percentage and mean were utilized to treat and interpret the gathered data. From the findings, the following conclusions were drawn: Majority of the respondents belong to 34-42 age group, female and mostly unemployed housewives. On economic conditions, they practice family planning. The community, performed well the roles of being a parent or child in their family for their social condition. Most people believe in the importance of education and most families strive to provide good education to their children. Based on the findings and conclusions, the researchers recommend the following: (1) Barangay Officials must conduct further study on the other aspects of the community to recognize the real and exact situation of the community; (2) The social worker must coordinate with the local officials in the locality for the service needed by the residents; (3) Future researcher may conduct more extensive research about the effects of literacy rate and may use this study as a reference. 2016 Abstracts Page 2 Effects of Large Family Size on Family Relationship and Socii-Economic Conditions
Malvar, Ruby Anne May Anne C. Baùaga Thesis Adviser This descriptive research study aimed to determine the effects of having a large family size. The study is descriptive since it aims to determine how large family size can affect family relationship and socio-economic condition. The respondents of this study were the eighty students of Marinduque State CollegeBoac who belong to large families. A purposive-convenience sampling technique was used in choosing the respondents. Frequency and percentage, and weighted mean was used in the treatement and interpretation of the data gathered. On effects of large family size, in terms of family relationship the respondents strongly agree that they are close to their parents. However, they strongly disagree that they are involved in any crimes or vices. On economic condition, the respondents strongly agree that their parents can support their education on the other hand, respondents answered that many of their siblings graduated in college. The study shows that on family relationship, respondents strongly agreed that they are close to their parents. However, they strongly disagree that they are involved in any crimes or vices. On the other hand, in terms of socio-economic conditions, majority of the respondents strongly agreed that their parents can support their education. Furthermore, respondents answered neutral that many of their siblings graduated in college. In terms of the perception on large family, majority of the respondents strongly agreed that being a member of a large family is blissful. In addition, respondents disagreed that having a large family is not a problem. In regards to coping mechanisms, most of the respondents answered that they immediately talk their problem with the family, but two of the respondents stated that they don’t join them I eating meals. Based on the conclusions, the researcher wishes to make the following recommendations: (1) The family should show positive outlook in life, express love, attention, care and also give disciplinary action with their children; (2) The parents must

give equal attention to their children to avoid envy to each other; (3) For the couple, they should have awareness towards family planning so that they will be prepared to build their own family; and (4) For the future researchers, they may conduct similar study and make different profile to continue this research for more references.

Baùaga Thesis Adviser This study aimed to the immediate and long term effect of Pantawid Pilipino Program to the beneficiaries in term of education and health as well as its impact to the key partners. The descriptive research design was used in this study. The instrument was based on the Social Welfare and Development Indicator by the Department of Social Welfare and Development which was modified by the researcher. The instrument includes three parts which consists of Demographic profile, questionnaires for the short and long term effect of the pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program to the beneficiaries in terms of education and health and the questionnaires for the key partners. The respondents of this study were the 106 beneficiaries from the five assisted barangays in the Municipality of Gasan, Marinduque namely Barangay Tiguion, Pinggan, Banuyo, Tabionan and Dawis. Respondents lives in coastal, upland, lowland and Geographical Disadvantage Areas (GDAs). Slovin’s formula was utilized to determine the sample size while respondents were chosen though random sampling technique. Collateral interview was conducted to LGUs and key partner agencies to know the impact of the progrram. Frequency, percentage and mean were utilized to treat and interpret the gathered data. From the findings, the following conclusions were drawn: majority of the respondents belongs to 39-46 age group, females and mostly unemployed housewives. They agreed that Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program has a positive impact to their institution. Considering the foregoing conclusions, the researcher recommends the following

interventions: (1) The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) should continue in the implementation of 4P’s. It is also highly recommended to design another program for the beneficiaries who graduated from the CCT. Otherwise, beneficiaries who use their cash grants wisely by giving an award and must be model recipients of the community, (2) The BS Social Work students to conduct similar study focusing on the factors that affects the program and the advantage and disadvantage of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program. Lastly (3) The authorities must prioritize the person who needs financial support and monitor the person who doesn’t use the cash grant wisely.

Evaluation of School Feeding Program in Selected Barangay Day Care Centers in Riverside, Boac

BaĂąaga Thesis Adviser This study aimed to determine the specific objective of the feeding program, how it was implemented and its effect to the beneficiaries in terms of Health and Nutrition, as well as in the Class Performance. A descriptive type of research design was used using both quantitative and its effect to the beneficiaries in terms of health and nutrition, and academic performance The respondents of this we're the 100 parents of the beneficiaries from the five assisted barangays in Riverside, Boac namely: Barangay Buliasnin, Bantad, Tabi, Tabigue and Tanza. Respondents we're randomly chosen. A Solvin's formula was utilized to determine the sample size. Likewise, 5 Day Care Workers and 5 BNS and BHW we're also interterviewed. They we're chosen using purposive sampling technique. Frequency, percentage, and weighted ran we're utilized to treat and interpret the gathered data. Based and on the result of the study, the feeding program was implemented within 120 days, Monday to Friday with the help of the parents. While in monitoring activities, they submit monthly report using the forms given by the Municipality Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO). The report consists of the documentation, height, and weight monitoring, reworking, and vitamin A supplementation. Reporting is done and submitted every month to the Barangay Officials as well as to the Municipal Nutrition, majority of the respondents agree that the child should drink deworming pills before undergoing feeding program; in general respondents agree that the program has positive effects to the beneficiaries in terms of health and nutrition. While in Class Performance. Majority of the respondents agreed that there is a decrees in absentism since that the child undergoes the feeding program, as a whole the respondents agreed that the program has positive effects in term of class performance. Considering the foregoing conclusions, the researchers recommend the following intervention: (1) The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Local Governemnt Unit (LGU) should continue the implementation of feeding program. It is also highly recommended to develop the program in order to avoid leakage to unintended beneficiaries which can cause by incorrectly illegibility rules, in frequent monitoring of illegibility or the absence of clearly stated illegibility rules, absence of clearly states exit rules, (2) The Bs Social Work students to conduct similar study focusing on the factors that affects the program and the advantage and disadvantage of the feeding program, (3) The parents and Barangay Officials Should give their full support and cooperation in this program to achieve the goal and reduce malnutrition in the barangay and the province as a whole.

Perception on Socio-Cultural Condition of Barangay Bacong-bacong, Gasan, Marinduque

May Anne C. Baùaga Thesis Adviser The study aimed to determine the socio-cultural condition of Barangay Bacongbacong as perceived by its residents. It also looked into the relationship between social and cultural condition that affect the development of the community. The study used a descriptive method of research. The respondents of this study were the 70 residents from the different household residing at Bacong-bacong,Gasan. A survey questionnaire formulated by the researcher ws used in data gathering. Data gathered where treated and interpreted with the use of frequency and prercentage and weighted mean. The study shows that the total land area of Barangay Bacong-bacong is 318.70 square kilometers with a total population of 955. The said baragay is composed of seven puroks namely: Malunggay, Maligaya, Masayahin, Maasahan, Sama-sama, Pag-kakaisa at Kaballero, and is composed of 233 household. On barangay economic profile, great numbers of workers were government employees and the least were OFWs. When it comes to the respondents perception on social condition of Barangay Bacong-bacong, majority of the respondents agreed that health center, school, and other facilities are present in their barangay, and residents are open to new ideas to programs and projects for the development of the community and the least agreed that the residents in the community have good relationship with each other. On the other hand, on the respondent’s perception on cultural condition, a great number of respondents agreed that the residents of the barangay value and give importance to the culture of the community and the least agreed that the culture affect the life of the people. Based on the findings and conclusion, the researcher recommends the following:

(1) The researcher recommends further study on the other aspects of the community to understand the real and exact situation of the community; (2) Conduct an interview to the Barangay Officials and citizens regarding with the felt needs of the people and the community; and (3) Residents must participate in developing and mobilizing the community.

Physical Status of Road and It’s Effect to the Economic Development of Barangay Argao, Magpog, Marinduque

Bañaga Thesis Adviser This descriptive study aimed to assess the physical status of Barangay Argao’s road and its effect to the barangay’s economic development. It also looked into the barangay’s involvement on road construction. The independent variable of this study is the physical status on the barangay, while the dependent variable is the effect of the roads physical status on the Barangay’s economic development. A self- constructed questionnaire was used in gathering data. The respondents of this study consist of 166 residents from every household of Barangay Argao that is selected using a random sampling technique. Frequency and percentage, and weighted mean was used in the treatment and interpretation of the data gathered. The results of the study revealed that majority of the respondents belongs to 26-34 years old, females and most were fishermen. The respondents disagreed that vehicles can pass by the road safely and that the road is not made of concrete materials. However they strongly agreed that the road is accessible to all. It further revealed that the physical status of the road can affect the transportation system and means of putting up businesses within the community. Therefore has an effect on the economic development of barangay Argao. Based on conclusions, the researcher recommend the following: 1) Conduct an interview regarding the felt needs of the people and the community; 2) The barangay officials must the further understand and identify the problems of the barangay in terms of road construction; 3) The barangay officials and citizen must organize a livelihood program to utilize their own products rather than waiting for vehicle to transport their products to town; 4) Future researcher may conduct extensive research about the problems and needs in the community and will be use this as reference in their next study. Prevalence of Physical Punishment as Disciplinary Method in Five Barangays in Buenavista, Marinduque
Manahan, Jonalyn Morales May Anne C. Bañaga Thesis Adviser This descriptive study aimed to determine the reasons why parents still use physical punishment as disciplinary method. The independent variables of the study are the respondent’s profile, number of parents who inflict physical punishment, while the dependent variables are the physical punishment and other disciplinary methods. A selfconstructed questionnaire was used in gathering data. The respondents of the study were the 100 parents ages 30 and above who was chosen randomly from the selected Barangays of Buenavista namely: Caigangan, Malbog, Lipata, Libas and Daykitin. Frequency and percentage, and weighted mean was used in the treatment and interpretation of the data. Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1) Majority of the respondent' age ranges from 32-42 years old, females, school graduate and married and has 1-4 children. Most of them are stay-at-home with their family income between P1,000 to 10,000 pesos 2) Mostly or 66% of parents uses physical punishment and majority (39%) of the respondents revealed the reason why they uses physical punishment is obeyed properly by their children. While a great amount of 50% stated that the child’s common offences is disobedience and the most alternative disciplinary method used by respondents is talking their children calmly. Considering the foregoing conclusions, the researcher recommends the following intervention: 1) The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) should continue government organization or advocate social sector efforts to promote responsible parenting; 2) Children’s agencies and institutions should collaborate with family members in enforcing protection of children’s rights and in curtailing violence against children who are defenseless and need protection from abusive adults; and 3) The number of family services should be increased and these agencies should offer more parenting skills. They need to be aware of the negative outcomes of verbal, emotional, and physical abuse as well as learn nurturing childrearing techniques that could foster self-esteem and confidence among children. Profile of Cases Filed Against Youth Offenders in Marinduque 2013-2015

May Anne C. Bañaga Thesis Adviser This study aimed to determine the prevalence of child conflict with the law (CICL) in the six municipalities of Marinduque. It also looked into the relationship between the nutritional status and the mother and child’s profile. The dependent variable of this study is the Prevalence and Types of CICL cases in Marinduque from 2013-2015 while the independent variables are the common crimes, factors and induced cicl to do crime, youth offender’s behavior and family situations. The descriptive correlation method of research was used. A self-constructed questionnaire was used in gathering data. The respondents of this study consist of 5 municipal social workers, 1 social work assistant, 1 court social worker, 6 women desk office, 6 barangay captain and 6 barangay councilors from the six municipalities of Marinduque. Frequency and percentage was used in the treatment and interpretation of the data gathered. Based on data gathered Boac is the municipalities that have the most number of CICL cases, second Gasan with 23 cases, Mogpog with 17 cases, Torrijos 11 cases, Sta. Cruz with 6 cases and lastly is Buenavista with 1 cases. The common crime that was committed by the youth offenders is theft. Most factors why CICL commit crime is economic problem with 11 or 44%, second is parenting style with 7 or 32%, third is family problem with 5/or 12% and the last factor is peer pressure with 2 or 8%. Majority answered below poverty threshold is common family situation with 16 or 64, Dysfunctional family with 6 or 21%, Broken family with 3 or 12% and no one answered that the common family situation is extended family. Most respondents answered about the behavior of youth offenders is hard headed with 15 or 60%, Rebellious with 6 or 24% and both of the Disrespectful and irresponsible have 2 or 8%. Based on the findings of this research, the study recommends the following is to conduct further extensive study about child in conflict with the law in Marinduque in the next few years and the LGU should conduct a seminar about prevention of increasing in the cases of CICL in Marinduque to the barangay officials and citizens regarding with the factors/reasons why youth commits crime at their young age and also with the

participation of every parents in the community while the police officers and barangay officials in different barangay must have the further understand of the situation and behaviour of every youth offenders that they have been encountered. Profiling of Existing Social Welfare Agencies in Marinduque

May Anne C. Baùaga Thesis Adviser This study aimed to profile the existing social welfare agencies in Marinduque. It also sought the usual problem encountered by the agency and the effects of those problems in the delivery of services. The respondents of this study are the nine administrators of the different Social Welfare Agencies operating in Marinduque; seven from Government Organizations (GO's) and two from Non-Government Organizations (NGO's). A questionnaire-checklist formulated by the researcher was used in the data gathering. The data gathered were treated and interpreted with the use of frequency and percentage. The studies showed that majority of the agencies were established by the mandate of the national government since it is public organization. Welfare agencies envision for the development of individuals, groups and community. The programs and services of the GO's follow the policy of national agency in terms of programs and services that they implement. On the other hand, NGO's services to those people and community that they have selected. GO’s funds are taken from the government while NGO's funds are from private entities. The study also showed that majority of the agencies encounter the following problem; (a) client has no knowledge about the program which resulted to slow compliance of the client on the needed requirements, (b) insufficiency in funds which lead for the agency not to address the services needed by the client and (c) the personnel lacks knowledge about the programs and services which resulted to ineffective implementation of services. Based on the findings and conclusions, researcher recommends the following: 1) Dissemination of the information about the programs and services must conducted

regularly or periodically to enhance the level of awareness of the people, 2) Periodic assessment and evaluation of the programs and services delivered 3) Social workers should be more emphatic in dealing with clients and that they should attend seminars and trainings on interpersonal relationship and 4) Further studies be conducted relative to effectiveness of social welfare programs and services in the alleviation of poverty. Road Condition and its Effects on the Economic Development of the Residents in Barangay Talawan, Torrijos, Marinduque

May Anne C. Baùaga Thesis Adviser The study aimed to assess the effects of Barangay Talawan's road condition on the respondent's economic development. A descriptive research design was utilized in this study. The dependent variable is the economic development of the respondents while the independent variable is the barangay's road condition. The respondents of this study were the 97 residents from Barangay Talawan, Torrijos, Marinduque that was selected through systematic random sampling. A self-constructed questionnaire was utilized by the researcher based on the literatures cited. It is divided into four parts: type of road, road’s physical condition and its effects on the economic development of the respondents, and the interventions done by the government and non-government organization develop the Barangay's road condition. Frequency, percentage and mean were utilized to treat and interpret and gathered data. The study shows that the road types in Talawan are; (60%) dirt type, (25%) concrete, and (15%)/under construction. The road's physical condition of Talawan had most rough and rocky type of road and some are concrete. Due to this, there are limited modes of transportation from the barangay to town proper and causes inaccessibility for the residents to easily reach the town. According to the residents, road is their usual problem because it really affects their living condition in terms of access to town. Due to the physical condition of road, people are affected in terms of their economic lives. Such factors are the difficulty of transporting products to town, connected to this is the vendors cannot get high profits because of expensive hire from a motor vehicles. Another, residents are lack of job opportunities due to road condition. Residents agree that

government organization gives funds for the road construction and helps to solve the problem of the barangay. Even there are no other cooperatives help to improve community in economic aspect. As another information, the Kalahi-CIDDS under the Department of Social Welfare and Development implemented project for the road construction in barangay Talawan with 2.194 kilometers on March 10-31, 2016. The researcher conducted this study in order to find solution to the problem of the barangay. It has been recommended the following: 1) Barangay officials should prioritize funding for road improvement and rehabilitation 2) Support the economic lives of the residents by buying their products 3) That further studies be conducted for the continues improvement of road and development of economic lives of the residents. 2016 Abstract Situational Analysis of Out-Of-School Youth (OSY) In Selected Barangays Of Boac, Marinduque Loto, Frisamae Hintay May Anne C. Baùaga Thesis Adviser This study aimed to determine the situation of the Out-of-School Youth in selected barangays in the Municipality of Boac, Marinduque. The researcher looked into the demographic profile, internal and external factors that lead the respondents to stop in their studies and the felts need to address. The descriptive method of research was used in this study. A self- constructed questionnaire was used in gathering data. The respondents of this research study were sixty (60) OSYs from the five barangay’s in barangay of Duyay. Bunganay, Bantay, Tabigue, and Amoingon. Said barangays have the highest number of OSY in the Municipality of Boac. Purposive sampling technique was utilized to determine the respondents in this study. Percentage, weighted mean and ranking were used in the statistical treatment of data. Based on the findings of the study ,the following conclusions were drawn: First, Majority of the OSY belongs to 21-25 years old, male, Roman Catholic, their parents were not married and high school graduates .Second, internal and external factors like attitude, physical condition, social relationship, school condition, distance, family background were not the main cause why they stopped their studies. On the other hand, the researcher found out that lack of financial support does affect their studies. Lastly, support and help from the family, employment and livelihood activities are the most felt needs of the respondents. Based at the findings of this research , it is strongly recommended that :The Government should assist and give attention to the OSY, they shall provide financial assistance and create opportunities to this individuals to continue their studies ;2) OSY may avail the alternative learning method of study offered by the Department of Education ;Family shall be oriented and will be given also attention in term of livelihood ; and 4)Future researchers may also conduct similar studies with focus on how OSY will be assisted and what are other factors that lead them to stop in their studies. Socio-Economic Condition of Single Parents in Gasan, Marinduque

May Anne C. Baùaga Thesis Adviser This descriptive research study aimed to study the socio-economic condition of single parents in Gasan, Marinduque. The respondents of this study were purposively selected 73 single parents from five assisted barangays in the municipality of Gasan, Marinduque namely Barangay Antipolo, Dawis, Mangiliol, Banot and Tiguion. Modified questionnaire was used as data gathering instrument. Frequency, percentage and mean were utilized to treat and interpret the gathered data. The study revealed that majority of solo parents in Gasan were female, aged 40-49 years old, high school graduate, vendors and have a monthly income of Php 1000.00-5,000.00. Most of respondents’ reason why they become solo parent was the death of spouse. Respondents are not aware of the Solo Parent Law and did not benefit on the provisions of this act. The respondents have a good social and economic condition. Based on the conclusions, the researchers wishes to make the following recommendations: educate the Single Parents about Solo Parent Welfare Act; enhance earning power by getting additional job training; the respondents shall register to Solo Parent Program to avail the benefits and services of Solo Parent Welfare Act of 2000 and future researchers may conduct further study on solo parent.

The Situation of Working Children in Barangay Libas and Bicas-bicas, Buenavista, Marinduque Alvarez, Angelle Lora
May Anne C. Baùaga Thesis Adviser This study aimed to determine the situation of working children in two (2) poor barangays of Buenavista namely Libas and Bicasbicas. It also looked into the responses of the government and the private sector to help them and the outlook of working children towards their future. A descriptive-correlation method of research was used. A self-constructed questionnaire was utilized by the researcher in gathering the data needed. An interview questionnaire formulated by the researcher was used in data gathering. Data gathered were treated and interpreted with the use of frequency, percentage and mean. The respondents of this study were 23 working children from the said barangays, their local government officials and selected staff of DOLE, MSWDO Buenavista and Mission Alliance Philippines. Result showed that majority of working children were 14 years old, sixth child in the family, fishermen, 14 years old when first engaged in economic activity, had daily income ranging from Php 1.00 – Php 200.00, worked for 4 to 8 hours daily and most were out-of-school youth. Mark percentage of the respondents fathers’ works as fishermen, their mother were fish vendors with monthly income of Php 3,001.00 and above. Most of the respondents have five to six siblings in the family. The reasons why children were forced to work are to augment family income and to earn money from themselves. Most of them inherit their type of work parents. The negative effects of doing heavy work vary from body pains, sickness and low energy in their school. Most of the working children were not active in community activities due to their low selfconfidence. The common risks encountered by the respondents while performing their job were heavy rains, big waves, bullied by other fishers, shivering due to coldness and hand wounds while the tuba gatherers usually experienced hand wounds. The government intervenes on the problems of child labor, they provides livelihood programs for child labor, they provides livelihood programs for the parents of working children, scholarship assistance and financial assistance for community activities. The respondents consider the value of pursuing their formal education in order to find better job or move on to college

degree. With this conclusion the researcher recommends to intensify awareness campaign and education on preventing child labor and its negative effects to children. Recognize and strengthen the barangay council could help in ensuring that rights of children are protected through local projects and activities. Enact and implement local ordinances to protect the working children. Children should be motivated and encouraged to go back to school to finish their studies. More support must be invested in improving educational facilities, health services and other basic social services that directly affect the fulfillment of children’s rights. Support normal development rights of children by providing among others, stimulating creative activities, play, social interaction. Provide more livelihood projects for the parents of working children. This could help them support for the needs of children. Future researchers may conduct further study on the issues concerning child labor.

This Study aims to discover the accessibility of Out-of-School Youth (OSY) to TESDA and DepEd Government Programs and Services in selected Barangays in Mogpog. The independent variables of the study were the respondents, demographic profile such as age, gender, educational attainment, monthly family income, and programs and services offered to Out-of school youth. A self- constructed survey questionnaire was used by the researchers in gathering the data. The respondents of this were the selected 35 Out-of-school youth aged 13-24 years old in selected barangays in the municipality of Mogpog using simple random sampling. Frequency, percentage and weighted mean were used in the treatment and presentation of the data. The result of the study revealed that 34% of the respondents belong to age group of 22-24 years old, males and they only reached elementary level. The students stopped from regular schooling because of financial problem. The respondents are more knowledgeable of the ALS programs compared to the TESDA programs. The reason/factor why they failed to access the programs and services was because of busy work schedule. Based on the conclusions, the researchers recommend the following: (1) for out-of-school youth, help them to enhance their skills in order to find a better job although they did not finish their studies; (2) for the Alternative Learning System and TESDA, coordinate with DOLE and MSWDO for job opportunities suitable to out of school youth; (3) conduct an orientation of the out-of-school youth for them to increase awareness on the programs and services of ALS and TESDA. Prepare fliers and disseminate this to the OSY In the area; (4) coordination with parents must be strengthened to help ensure a good relationship between the schools and learners; and (5) for the future researchers, they may create this study’s scope bigger.

This study aimed to evaluate the availability of the identified evacuation center's basic necessities and services of the identified barangay in the municipality of Torrijos. It also sought the common problems encountered by the evacuees and the remedial action of the barangay/municipality to the problems encountered. The respondents of this study were the evacuees from Barangay Buangan, Cagpo, Makawayan, Malibago and Marlangga. A questionnaire was used to gather data. The data were treated and interpreted with the use of frequency and percentage. The study showed that most of the basic necessities and services were present in each evacuation center of the five barangays in the municipality of Torrijos in compliance with the standard indicator of Evacuation Centers Management Committee Functions. The study also showed that outsourcing of all the basic necessities and services are immediately taken action to sustain the needs of the evacuees by the barangay officials in cooperation with other municipal agencies and non-government organizations. Based on the findings and conclusions, The researchers recommend the following: 1)additional fund for sustainability of basic services ;2) review of reports regarding the evacuation centers and conduct of inspection that would be the basis in evaluating the implementation and compliance in the barangay to the Disaster Evacuation Center Management Guidelines as stated in Memorandum Circular No.1,Series 2013 ; 3) evacuees may be encouraged to attend disaster preparedness training and seminars to acquire more knowledge and skills to manage their own safety during calamities; and 4) to the agencies that are concerned with the welfare of the evacuees ,that they may increase allocation of funds for housing projects to improve their house condition.

The descriptive study aimed to determine the availment and level of satisfaction of the registered solo parents to R.A 8972 otherwise known as Solo Parents’ Welfare Act of 2000 in selected Barangays of Boac, Marinduque. A survey questionnaire was used in data gathering. The respondents of this consist of fifty three registered solo parents that were identified in the data given by the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office of Boac, Marinduque. Frequency and percentage, and weighted mean were used in the treatment and interpretation of the data gathered. The result of the study reviewed that most of the respondents are female ranges age from 62-69 years old, majority of the respondents barely finish basic education. Consequently, many of the respondents have no income and more concerned on their financial difficulties. Despite registration as solo parent, almost all respondents have not availed the benefits and services for solo parents which are stipulated under R.A 8972 or the Solo Parent Welfare Act. Thus, the majority of respondents felt that the policy has little to no benefit and impact of them. Aside of not availing services for solo parents, the services like flexible work schedule, work discrimination and parental leave are not applicable to majority of the respondents since they belong to the informal sector of the work force. Based on the conclusion, the researchers recommend to conduct further studies on Solo Parents in the Philippines as this may serve as reference.

This study utilized descriptive research design yo determine the programs and services availed by Persons with Disabilities from Government in the selected Barangays in the municipality of Boac. The respondents of this study were fifty PWDs from three selected Barangays in the municipality of Boac, more specifically from Bantay, Laylay and the Bunganay. They were chosen using the purposive sampling technique. Furthermore, four implementers who of the Programs and Services for PWDs from different Government Agencies on the said municipality were also interviewed. Structured questionnaires developed by the researches were used to gather data. The data gathered we're and analyzed and organized through frequency and percentage. The study showed that majority of the respondents belong to young adult to middle age bracket, males, high school graduates and have a monthly family income of less than Php 1,000 to Php 20,000. The programs and services availed by the most of the respondents is Aid to Individual in Crisis Situation. The Programs and Services needed that were identified by the respondents are financial assistance, medical assistance and livelihood program. One of the obstacles encountered by the respondents availing of the aforementioned programs and services was PWDs lack of information regarding on the Programs and Services offered by the government. Meanwhile, one of the problems encountered by the Implementers is inadequate funds for implementation of Proposed Programs. Based on the findings of this research study,one of the researchers recommendations is the continuous launching and organizing by the program implementer of information dissemination materials or activities on the programs and services available for PWDs in the different agencies must be prioritized.

The purpose of this study was to identify the best practices of Sustainable Livelihood Program in three selected barangays in Boac,Marinduque. Specifically, there are ten (10) respondents from Brgy. Tugos, ten (10) respondents in Brgy. Bangbangalon, and ten (10) respondents in Brgy. Catubugan, Boac, Marinduque. Result of this showed that the project of the three (3) barangays is Micro- Enterprise such as Copra Trading, Community Store, and Catering. These business were funded by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).It has been observed that although there are some factors affecting the development of the project ,it is stable and continuously developing in the point that they can produce new business success because of the best practices they applied and viewed as essential for business success such as Patronizing Business, Majority Decision Making, Proper Management of Finances ,Conduct Regular Meeting ,Assistance from Government Agencies ,Problem Solving, Having Assigned task based on the expertise ,Business strategies ,Clear Signage Visibility ,Excellent Customer Relations ,Choosing in demand products, Organized display ,Transparency ,inventory System and Benefits. These concepts were used based on the respondents' narratives and the researchers' observations. Considering the foregoing findings, the researchers recommend to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Local Government Unit (LGU) that they may continue the implementation of the Sustainable Livelihood Program; Mic-enterprise Development.

This study aimed to determine the problems encountered by the ESGP - PA dropouts that have an impact towards the government's objective. The respondents of this study were the ten selected ESGP - PA dropouts who formerly enrolled in the main campus of Marinduque State College. A self - constructed survey and guide questions by the researchers were used in interviewing as the research instruments. The result revealed that majority of the respondents who dropped out belongs to the age group of 20 - 22 years old and had the same percentage of male and female. The study showed that the respondents encountered the following problem; (a) Most of the respondents chose courses with board examinations which had level of difficulty in the demand of their courses; (b) Some respondents were forced or influenced by the others in the course they were not interested; (c) Most of them preferred to have work, grabbed the opportunity to earn money on their own and provide for the family; (d) Female respondents encountered pregnancy as one family; and (f) Peer pressure, social services and social media were also seen as factors. Based on the findings and conclusions, the researchers recommend the following: (1) Instead of funding trainings and seminars, invest in additional manpower to conduct quarterly monitoring to lessen the ESGP - PA drop out. (2) Counseling is an important activity to guide and motivate a grantee for them not to drop out; (3) Family members especially the parents must be well - oriented regarding their responsibilities in giving support to their children in finishing their studies and (4) Faculty members must be aware of the program so that the students in the program may be supervised and guided in academic matter which is a big factor contributing to the and perseverence of the students. BaĂąaga RSW Thesis Adviser The descriptive study aimed to determine the Effects of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program to the beneficiaries in terms of education, health/nutrition, income/livelihood and family relationship as well as its effects to the key partners. The instrument has three parts; namely, (1) demographic profile, (2) questionnaires for the effects of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program to the beneficiaries in terms of education, health/nutrition, income/livelihood, and family relationship, and (3) questionnaires for the key partners. The respondents of this study were 291 beneficiaries from fifhteen (15) barangays in the municipality of Buenavista; namely, Barangay Bicas - Bicas, Bagacay, Caigangan, Sihi, Timbo, Lipata, Yook, Libas, Uno, Dos, Tres, Quatro, Bagtingon, Daykitin and Malbog. Slovin's formula was utilized to determine the sample size while respondents were chosen through random sampling technique. Survey questionnaires were distributed to LGUs and key partner agencies to know the effects of the program. Frequency, percentage and mean were utilized to treat and interpret the gathered data. From the findings, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) majority of the respondents belongs to 42-50 age group, females and mostly unemployed housewives; (2) they strongly agreed that the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program has a positive effects to their institution. Considering the foregoing conclusions, the researchers recommend the following interventions: 1.) The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) should assure that the money they give to the beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program is to be used in a proper way, especially to the education of their children and to their daily need. 2.) The BS Social Work students and other researchers should conduct similar study that focuses on the effects of the program in other Municipalities of Marinduque, in other provinces, regions or the whole country as this can be a basis of whether or not to continue the implementation of the program; and 3.) Baùaga RSW Thesis Adviser The evaluative study aimed to evaluate the disaster preparedness for typhoon Nina of the local agencies in the municipality of Santa Cruz. The researcher utilized a survey questioner based on Disaster Preparedness Manual (Checklist of Early Preparations for Mayors) & (Checklist for MLGOOs, COPs and FMS). The respondent of the study were the 74 residents of the five selected barangays (Masaguisi, Buyabod, Lipa, Lapu-Lapu and Manlibunan) who are certified as totally damaged who local agencies (Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office) Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (BDRRMO) who are primarily concerned when it comes to typhoon preparedness. Frequency, Percentage and mean were utilized as statistical treatment for the data gathered. The study revealed that the concerned officers rendered their pre-disaster activities before the occurrence of typhoon Nina. The difficulties and challenges encountered by the concerned agencies are: lack of awareness and initiative of residents, lack of manpower and others. Majority of the respondents said that they perceive the services rendered by the concerned agencies. Based on findings and conclusion, the researcher’s recommends that the concerned agencies should continue conducting predisaster training and drills and must allocate additional fund when it comes to preparedness activities and needs like equipment's, the Municipality of Santa Cruz should hire more personnel. Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council are encourage to strengthen partnership with NGOs in order to increase support for disaster assistance. They concerned agencies should monitor the involvement of DepEd in supervising schools when it comes to disaster education. Community-based disaster practices and programs should be participated by people of barangays and year-round sustainable disaster intervention activities should be initiated in order to insure a continuous improvement of disaster management strategies and policies for the people to internalized and that they can act instantly on their own initiative during emergency situations. Further studies about disaster risk reduction management strategies and policies for the people to internalize and that they can act instantly on their own initiative during emergency situations. The researcher utilize questionnaire, face-to-face interview and focused group discussion to gathered data from the respondents. Seventy one beneficiaries of the program purposively selected from the different households in the Gawad Kalinga Community in Brgy. Banuyo Gasan, Marinduque serve as the respondents of this study. Frequency, percentage and mean were utilized as statistical treatment for the data gathered. The study revealed that majority of the respondents were elementary graduate, major sources of livelihood are fishing and farming and the average monthly family income is between Php 1,000.00 to 5,000.00. The services provided by the program are livelihood and shelter projects. One of the problems encountered by the beneficiaries is the handling of contract of the socialized housing unit that they wished to be grant as their own property as well as the sustainability of the implementation of the livelihood projects. As a whole the First Tatag housing Program as a positive effect to the social and economic aspects of the respondents lives. Based on the findings and conclusion, the researchers recommends that the implementers of the programs and restart the implementation of the agricultural and livelihood projects through seminars and skills training; collaborate with other Local Government Unit (LGUs) provide support in terms of economic and social growth; review the policies in terms of monitoring the condition of the shelters; and lastly, the future researchers may conduct further study on issues of education program that would fit in the needs of the beneficiaries. It also sought to determine the causes and effects of teenage pregnancy at Dili and Pinggan. Purposive sampling procedures were used in selecting respondents. The respondents of this study are ten (10) teenage mothers. A focus Group Discussion Guide and observation were used in gathering data. Questionnaires were the major tool to employ qualitative data for the study. Based on the result of the conducted group discussions in Barangay Dili and Pinggan. The study showed that the demographic profile; 1. Out of (10) respondents: (6) engaged in premarital sex at the age of sixteen, (3) at the age of (15) and (1) at the age of (17). 2. Teenagers first conceived their child at the age range of 16-18. Respondents’s family income ranges from Php 2,000-Php 18,000. The study showed that the causes of teenage pregnancy were; 1. Non-use of contraceptives. The study also showed the effects of teenage pregnancy were; 1. Drop out of shool, 2. Decrease oppurtunity to go back to school, 3. Lees economic oppurtunities, 4. Decrease oppurtunity to socialize and, 5. Lack of skills in child rearing. The positive effects were; 1. No complications during labor/birthing, 2. Perceived Difficulties and Needs of Mentally Challeged Persons in Selected Barangays of Boac, Marinduque Cabales, G., Malangis, S., Salazar, V.(2017) Anna Farina J. Lanot, RN, MAN Thesis Adviser This descriptive study aimed to describe the difficultis and needs have mentally challeged individuals. A self-constructed questionnaire was used in gathering data. The respondents of this study consist of 35 parents and guardians of mentally challeged which were selected in the data given by the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office. Frequency and percentage, and weighted mean were used in the treatment and interpretation and the data gathered. The result of the study revealed that the majority of the repondentd belongs to 21-30 years old, male under the category of mentally challeged and the family monthly income is below 5,000. The respondents disagreed that lack of health care service is not a problem of the mentally challeged. However, they aggreed that understanding written language is the problem of the mentally challeged. The respondents strongly agrred that mentally challeged need social support need social support from the government. The study further revealed that basic services are available in the Rural Health Unit (RHU) but other services of the mentally challenged are not accessible within the province. It also offered limited and paid services the family of the research subject cannot. Based on the conclusion, the researchers recommend to conduct more in-depth studies on social, intellectual and behavioral situation of the mentally challenged. Baùaga RSW Thesis Adviser This study aimed to know the perceived factors of bullying to the grade nine students of Marinduque National High School experiences. A descriptive type of research design was used are correlation design in order to identify the relevant data and to compile the information about bullying among students of Marinduque National High School (MNHS) in order to determine the material and come up with more and complete understanding of what kind of bullying experience by the respondents and how does it affects their academic performance. The respondents this study were the 283 students of Marinduque National High School (MNHS). Slovin’s formula was utilized to determine the sample size. Likewise, the school Guidance Counsellor were also interviewed. They were chosen using random sampling technique. Frequency, percentage and weighted mean were utilized to traet and interpret the gathered data. Based on the findings and the conclusions of the study, the recommendations are 1) The Marinduque National High School has done great job in keeping the extreme forms of bullying to a minimum rate. Nevertheless, to improve the learning atmosphere in school and decrease the rate of verbal abuse experienced by majority of the students, the school can promote values enhancement, gender and cultural sensitivity among students, faculty and staffs. 2) The school may continue to strenghten school policies and actions against bullying. Aside from school policies and action, students may become advocate and implementers of the Ati-Bullying Campaign of the school. This will not only raise awareness about bullying but will also reinforce pro-social behaviour among students. Possible Factors that the Suspected Violators Commits Incest

May Anne C. Bañaga RSW Thesis Adviser . This study aimed to determine the factors which cause the occurrence of crime. This is qualitative and case study type of research, employing in-depth interview in order to determine the demographic profile of the families with incest rape violator, the family history of parents with incest, previous socio-economic condition of the respondents and the factors present in the family which may have contributed to the occurrence of incest. The respondents of the study are three (3) selected families in the two municipalities of Marinduque; two (2) families from Boac, and one (1) from Gasan. Boac is second to the highest with regards to the number of incest cases, and with Gasan as the fourth in rank. Purposive sampling was the method used by the researcher in identifying the respondents. Based on the result of the study, researchers were able to determine that the three families belong to lower class economy with low income. They were also able to determine that the three families had a larger number of members, having 6, 10, 11 members respectively in the household. The ages of the victims were 9, 14, and 15 years old while the suspected violators age range from 42 to 51. With regard to the factors that may have contributed to the occurrence of the crime was identified in the three families, “sleeping in the same room”, “having no source of electricity”, “absence of the mother in the family’, “the distance of the house as far from the neighbors”, “having vices like drinking alcohol, history of taking dangerous drugs, smoking, playing cards”, which may also considered as a contributing factor. Based on the significant findings of this study, possible interventions are recommended, such as the conduct of investigative interviews, provision of medical examination to the victim, as well as counseling, and if necessary, provision of livelihood assistance to the victim and the family. Advocacy programs and activities aiming to increase awareness, understanding and concern of the people in the communities toward the growing reality of incest might lessen the factors which contributed to the occurrence of the crime. Due to the large number of reported incest rape cases in the province, the National or Provincial Government may take into consideration, provision of facilities or institutions to provide services and protection for the victim and the family who suffer from abused. Programs for Women’s Survivors of Incest aiming to deal with unresolved feelings and a process of healing to regain their Page 36

This study aimed to assess the psychosocial functioning of the selected mentally challenged persons in the Municipality of Mogpog, Marinduque, The subjects of this study were the five (5) selected mentally challenged person in the Municipality of Mogpog. The respondents were their family, relatives and friends. A structured questionnaire was used to gathered data. The gathered data were analyzed and organized through case study, genogram and ecomap. Likewise, the study showed the cases belong to the category of young adult to middle aged group. Critical events and heredity were identified as possible factors that may have contributed greatly to the occurrence of mental illness among the cases. There are challenges in terms of delivery of program and service and a great need of services and facilities for the complete recovery and protection of people with mental illness in Marinduque. Also people in the communities lacks deeper understanding and concern for people suffering mental illness. Based on the findings, the researchers recommend the following: 1) For the program implementers, a review and evaluation on the existing program and services for the mental health patients would likely aid possible means to improve the delivery of services for the mentally challenged in the province, 2) Advocacy programs and activities aiming to increase awareness and concern of the people in the communities toward the mentally challenged and 3) provision of facilities for the complete recovery, rehabilitation, welfare and protection suffering from mental illness within the province of Marinduque. Alice Joy M. Aquino, RN, MAN Thesis Adviser This study aimed to find out the significant relationship between the Socio-economic Factors and the Level of Life Satisfaction of Senior Citizens. The study is a qualitative and quantitative research. The respondents of this study are composed of 290 senior citizens aging 60 to 80 years old among the Barangays of Banahaw, Lapu-lapu, and Napo in the Municipality of Sta. Cruz. A checklist-questionnaire formulated by the researcher was used in data gathering. Frequency, percentage, mean, weighted mean and Chi-Square Test of Independence were used as a statistical tools in interpreting the gathered data from the findings, majority of the respondents were on the age of 65 - 69 years old (29%), most of them were female (39.6%) and are married (63.4%). Majority of the respondents where living with their grandchildren. Factors such as Socio-economic status, social support and health condition where found out to be a contributing factor on the level of life satisfaction of senior citizens. When it comes on the significant relationship between the socio-economic factors and the level of life satisfaction of senior citizens, using a chisquare test of independence an interpretation was made that there is a significant relationship between them. The study aimed to determine the Status of Health and Economic Impact of Republic Act 9003 in Barangay, Maybo, Boac, Marinduque. Purposive sampling was employed in selecting the sample size using the following considerations; demographic profile, health and economic, benefits of staying close to the dumpsite and risks that are caused by residents near the area. A set of questions using FGD (focus group discussion) was used in interviewing the respondents in gathering the data. The study found that solid waste management in the dumpsite located at Maybo, Boac, Marinduque affects the economic and health status of the people near the site. The dumpsite serves as the source of income, food source of animals. However, it brings a lot of bad effects such as health problems, pollution (land, water, and air) existence of too much pests, animal deceases and unclean environment. Based on the findings, the following are recommended: Barangay may propose and enforce an ordinance in waste segregation, coordinagtion among local residents for waste segregation. the municipal may exercise monitoring and sanctioning roles adequately and systematic process of checking, observing, inspecting, regulating or otherwise controlling key parameters and characteristics activities at the dumpsite to ensure compliance with specific standards or other performance requirements to measure progress toward reduction of health and environmental risks and consider other methods of waste disposal such as waste reduction strategies.
