FOOTBALL SATURDAY, OCT. 23

The road and trajectory to the 2021 Great Plains Athletic Conference championship take a steeper and faster path as the regular season rolls along. A key journey milestone is at hand this afternoon on the Elwood Olsen Stadium FieldTurf. Morningside University and Dordt University ranked No. 3 and 15 on the Week Six National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics/First Down Playbook poll, face off. Head coach Steve Ryan’s Mustangs are 6-0 overall and in league play. The Defenders, coached by Joel Penner, stand 5-1 overall and in the GPAC.

THE SERIES Mside has won the 13 previous contests. However, Dordt gave the 10-time defending loop victors all they could handle last fall in Sioux Center, battling to a 35-30 final.

THE MATCH-UP Morningside’s offense has been on juggernaut status from the get-go this season. They hold down national number one statistical rankings in 13 different categories over six outings. That cadre is spotlighted by 380 total and 63.3 points per game; 3,914 overall and 652.3 yards per game of total offense; 408.2 yards per game through the air and 196 first downs. Several individuals lead the team’s high-flying numbers. Senior quarterback Joe Dolincheck is first in the NAIA in completion percentage (72.2), yards per game (325.5), and pass efficiency (201.6). Senior running back Anthony Sims is part of the best 10 in rushing touchdowns (19 – No. 2), yards per attempt (8.7 – No. 3), yards per game (114.7 – No. 7), and total yards (688 – No. 10). Senior wide receiver Reid Jurgensmeier also has a top 10 listing, as his eight touchdowns are seventh-most. Junior placekicker Chase Carter leads the country in made (52) and attempted (53) extra points. Mside’s defensive unit has played an immense role in the team’s fortunes. Their 28 sacks are second-most in the NAIA, while the eight interceptions they’ve gathered among 11 total takeaways are part of the nation’s top 30 (No. 27). Senior linebacker Tyler Wingert leads the group with 52 tackles and five sacks and shares the tackles for loss lead with senior defensive lineman Weston Schultz. He and senior defensive back Drew Bessey have combined for five interceptions, too. An impressive number was related to a 19th straight Battle for the Saddle victory for Morningside on Oct. 16. Also, the set of digits was on the mind of everyone clad in maroon at Memorial Stadium on a sunny early fall afternoon. It signified head coach Steve Ryan joining an elite fraternity in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The 84-7 output against Briar Cliff University earned him the title of the 11th head coach to reach 200 career victories. “This is just a tribute to all of the student-athletes I’ve been fortunate enough to coach and the coaches I’ve been able to work alongside during my career,” Ryan noted postgame. “It’s part of the continuality of the success we’ve been able to maintain

Huitink Legacy Remembered this Weekend Doug Huitink carried a moniker of the “smallest starting tackle” in the old National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II North Central Conference. The heart and will of the late Morningside University gridiron alum were immeasurable. “It didn’t matter who he or those offensive lines had across from them,” long-time friend and Delta Sigma Phi fraternity brother Larry Mason reminisced. “They just went out and created holes against whoever they were playing, and Doug was a huge part of that. That group enabled Dave Bigler, an M Club Hall of Famer, to become one of the program’s first 1,000-yard rushers and, at the time he left school, to be the season and career rushing record holder.” Mason noted that his leadership qualities didn’t end on the football field, either.

“Dad loved Morningside,” she said. “We felt it was important to pass that love along with a permanent memorial.” According to Jonathan Blum, Morningside University’s Director of Gift Planning and Donor Advising, the scholarship will go to a first-year football student-athlete each year. The Huitink family is also paying tribute to their father this weekend, as the No. 3-ranked National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Mustangs face off against Great Plains Athletic Conference foe Dordt University. They’ll be recognized during the game, and gatherings are set at Bob Roe’s Extra Point this afternoon and in Ireton Sunday with a memorial service. “We are so grateful to everyone at Morningside,” Kara continued. “It was such a special place for Dad and all of our family. We had been waiting for the right time for a weekend like this and knew it had to be around a football game. He was such an avid fan, and so many of his friends are from his playing days.”

“Our fraternity group stayed close up until his death,” he said. “He was still kind of our leader – helping plan out our yearly fishing trips to Canada and any events we had going on when the guys all got back together.” “He was and will always be my best friend,” he added. “I miss the camaraderie we had throughout our lives. I think it’s wonderful that a scholarship for a football student-athlete is being made in his memory. Whip was loyal as any grad at Morningside.” Doug’s daughter, Kara (Huitink) Coquillon, and the family created the Doug Huitink Memorial Scholarship in the wake of his passing last November.

continued from page one here. It all goes back to so many people I’ve had the chance to see after today’s game --- individuals who have gone on to do so much in their lives.” Before the post-game celebration of a historic victory, the team’s work done on the field was just as memorable. Among the numbers that stood out beyond the 84 points, a record in the series versus the Chargers and most points in a game since the 2015 squad put up 86 against Nebraska Wesleyan, were 44 first downs, 710 total yards of offense, just 154 yards of total offense allowed, three takeaways, five sacks and 14 tackles for losses. The offensive outpouring enabled two other milestone marks. Sims became the fourth rusher in program history to reach the 3,000-mark during an eight-carry, 46-yard, two-touchdown day. Dolincheck moved into the Mustangs’ 10,000 passing yardage club as the fourth-such member. He went 16-of-23 for 263 yards with three touchdowns. Dolincheck and Sims were just two of the many contributors to enable Mside to keep pace with rival Northwestern atop the loop standings. They were joined by junior running back Michael Minor (15 carries – 147 yards); freshman running back Ryan Cole (two rushing touchdowns); senior wide receivers Caleb Schweigart, Jurgensmeier, and Austin Johnson and senior tight end Sione Tuifua (one receiving touchdown apiece) with Jurgensmeier and Schweigart each hauling in 73 yards; senior defensive lineman Dominick Barrett (six tackles, one sack, and three tackles for

losses); Wingert, junior linebacker Garrett Hoagland, senior defensive lineman Logan Schuelke, senior defensive lineman Carter Anderson, and freshman linebacker Brody Nelson joining Barrett with a sack; and Wingert, senior defensive back Drew Bessey and sophomore linebacker Isaac Pingel (one interception each). Dordt’s offense has been just as impressive as its hosts. The Defenders average 509.8 yards of offense per contest which ranks fourth nationally. That mark is spotlighted by a potent rushing attack (1876 yards/312.7 per game/5.8 per contest/21 touchdowns), sitting all among the NAIA’s best seven marks. They have five players with 200-or-more yards on the ground, led by junior Anthony Trojahn’s 516 and six touchdowns and freshman Josh Bush’s 302 and five touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Levi Jungling has been a tall task for opposing defensive secondaries, too, with 629 yards and seven scores. A linebacking duo of junior Brayton Van Kekerix and sophomore Tanner Millikan is one-two in tackles (41/34). Morningside concludes the home portion of its regular-season schedule Saturday, Oct. 30. The University of Jamestown takes a southeastern journey for a 1 p.m. kickoff spotlighted by 2021 Senior Day festivities.
