MUSTANG FOOTBALL
It’s a Frontier Conference – Great Plains Athletic Conference clash as the 2020 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Championship Series begins today. Two-time defending national champion Morningside College welcomes Carroll College of Montana to Memorial Stadium in one of eight first-round match-ups. Head coach Steve Ryan’s Mustangs, GPAC champions, stand 8-0. Head coach Troy Purcell’s Saints, the Frontier Conference co-victors, sport a 3-1 record.
THE MATCH-UP This is only the second meeting all-time between the two programs. Carroll claimed a 27-16 win during the 2007 national playoffs’ second round in the previous contest. For five straight weeks, Morningside held down the No. 1 spot on the NAIA’s FirstDown Playbook top 25. The Maroon earned 418 ranking points and 17 first-place votes. In-state rival Grand View College (No. 2), Lindsey Wilson College of Kentucky (No. 3), Keiser University of Florida (No. 4), and the Concordia University of Michigan (No. 5) rounded out the first five. It was the second year in a row that Mside went wire-to-wire as the regular season No. 1. Senior defensive lineman Niklas Gustav and Ryan headlined a large Mustangs’ group on the 2020 all-conference postseason football awards, released Dec. 23. Gustav was named Defensive Player of the Year. The three-time all-league selection led the GPAC in total tackles for loss (15.5) and tackles for loss per game (1.9), sacks (8.5), and sacks per game (1.1). His award marks the fifth time in the last six seasons that a Maroon student-athlete has garnered such recognition. Ryan, who guided the program to a 10th straight loop crown, became a nine-time conference Coach of the Year. He’s claimed the last four honors in a row. Gustav was joined by senior wide receiver Reid Jurgensmeier, senior offensive lineman Hunter Behrens, junior special teams’ standout Caleb Schweigart, fellow senior defensive lineman Seth Maitlen, senior linebacker Tyler Wingert, and sophomore defensive back Josh Miller on the first team. Maitlen was a three-time first-teamer; Jurgensmeier picked up his second first team honor and third overall; and it was the first such accolade for Behrens, Miller, and Schweigart. The second team awards went to senior running back Anthony Sims, junior tight end Sione Tuifua, senior offensive lineman Jason Hahlbeck, and sophomore offensive lineman Mason Williams on offense. Junior linebackers Jalen Portis and Weston Schultz, junior defensive back Drew Bessey, and sophomore defensive back Jamal Jones captured the same on defense. Sims and Tuifua were recognized for the second time by the conference, while it was the first such award for the rest of the second-teamers. Rounding out the Morningside College all-GPAC gridiron selections were junior quarterback Joe Dolincheck and senior defensive back Steven Evans. Ryan added more honors to the already well-stocked Morningside cadre earlier this week. He was named the American Football Coaches Association’s Region 4 NAIA Coach of the Year on April 14, his seventh straight regional accolade. Ryan has an overall record of 192-40 in his 19 years as head coach and is tied for third all-time with 10 AFCA regional honors. The Mustangs have claimed nine straight first-round playoff victories. Three of those have occurred versus Frontier Conference foes, as they upended Rocky Mountain College in 2013 and 2018 and Montana Tech in 2012.
ABOUT CARROLL COLLEGE Purcell’s program is making its first postseason appearance since 2014. They wound up their regular season with a 28-19 win over previously top-ten ranked College of Idaho on April 10. The triumph marked the school’s first conference title. Carroll’s defense, led by coordinator Wes Nurse, proved critical. They totaled six sacks, including two and a half from junior defensive lineman Garrett Kocab. They also registered three interceptions, two from junior defensive back TJ Abraham and one from sophomore defensive back Micah Ans. Sophomore running back Matt Burgess continued his remarkable 2020 campaign, tallying 32 carries for 169 yards and two touchdowns. His 149 yards per contest average leads the nation, while his 191.3 all-purpose yards per outing are third-most. Abraham’s ball-hawking play in the secondary has drawn national numbers’ attention. His four picks are seventh-highest. His 36 tackles are first for the CC defense, with Kocab second (29).
