MUSTANG FOOTBALL
A top 10 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ showdown is on the docket this afternoon at Elwood Olsen Stadium, as one of four championship series quarterfinals visits Sioux City. Baker University of Kansas, one of the divisional champions in the Heart of America Conference, sports a 7-0 mark and is ranked No. 7. Head coach Steve Ryan’s Morningside College Mustangs, the two-time defending national and 10time reigning Great Plains Athletic Conference victors, stand 9-0. This afternoon’s winner moves on to the NAIA semifinals set for Saturday, May 1, at a site and time to be determined based on today’s quarterfinal round results.
THE MATCH-UP The Maroon has captured both previous meetings in the series. Morningside claimed a 36-28 decision in 2013 and posted a 65-27 triumph in 2008. As is the case today, both games were national playoff affiliated. Ryan’s program has claimed eight successive national quarterfinal round successful outcomes. Included in that roll was a 51-0 victory against Saint Xavier University of Illinois a year ago. The last contest between today’s competitors was also a quarterfinal round outing. The Mustangs enter ranked among the NAIA top 10 in 15 different statistical categories. Situated along that high-rent avenue are six No. 1 and one No. 2 listings. They lead the country in total offense (3,278 yards), passing yardage per contest (364.2), fewest sacks allowed per appearance (.2) and overall (two), total offense per game (552.7 ypg), and scoring per outing (52 ppg). The team’s nearly immaculate passing efficiency of 193.2 is the secondhighest. Morningside’s individual numbers are just as gaudy. Junior quarterback Joe Dolincheck is the country’s leader in pass efficiency (199.5) and passing yards per game (333.2); senior wide receiver Reid Jurgensmeier is first in points scored (114), and junior defensive back Drew Bessey’s five interceptions top the national digits. Dolincheck, on the front step of a second straight 3000-yards-plus passing campaign, is second in that category (2,999) and total offense per game (334.4 ypg), while Jurgensmeier is second in points per outing (12.7). A remarkable streak of lighting up postseason scoreboards continued on April 17. The top-seeded Mustangs posted a 50-pointor-more effort for a seventh consecutive year in the championship series, rolling past Carroll College of Montana 55-0 at Memorial Field. The team proved dominant from nearly every phase. A juggernaut offense produced 566 total yards and 30 first downs, was 55.5 percent on third conversions, a perfect 1.000 on fourth down attempts, and missed just one of seven trips in the red zone for scores. A similar theme occurred for the defense. They held the Fighting Saints to less than 300 total yards, which included roadblocking running back Matt Burgess, who entered as the national leader in ground yards per game, to 81 on 21 carries, his
lowest single-game effort since late in the 2019 campaign. Co-defensive coordinators Casey Jacobsen and Nate Turner’s unit also turned over the opposition five times, garnering three fumble recoveries and two interceptions. Special teams added headlines to sending Mside to 9-0 and into the national quarterfinals. The Mustangs allowed only 42 return yards and better than 35.7 yards per punt attempt. After a slow start that saw the home team fumble in the red zone and punt on their first two offensive attempts, the following five drives resulted in touchdowns to the delight of the partisan Maroon crowd. Three of the marches went for 75-yards-or-more to stake Morningside to an insurmountable 34-0 halftime lead. Dolincheck added to his sparkling career resume, throwing for 322 yards and a score; the upperclassman backfield duo of senior Anthony Sims and junior Matt Strecker proved a battering ram as Sims carried the ball 20 times for 137 yards and three touchdowns, and Strecker found the end zone twice among 16 attempts for 75 yards. The wide receiver trio of juniors Austin Johnson and Caleb Schweigart and senior Reid Jurgensmeier collected 60-yards-ormore and combined for a touchdown. Defensive heroes were just as numerous. Sophomore defensive back Joshua Miller, en route to Player of the Game awards to join Sims in the accolade, registered 11.5 tackles, including one-and-a-half for losses of 16.5 yards, forced, and recovered a fumble, and broke up two pass attempts. Junior linebacker Weston Schultz totaled seven tackles and a blocked punt, and Bessey recorded a pair of interceptions.
ABOUT BAKER Head coach Jason Thoren’s Wildcats have a solid offensive attack leading them to a remarkable 2020 season. Senior running back J.D. Woods, who went for 258 yards and five touchdowns in last weekend’s first-round playoff win over the Olivet Nazarene University of Illinois, is closing in on 1,000-yard territory. He’s been the bell cow for the running game, sporting 153 carries for 916 yards and 14 scores. Senior signal-caller Marco Aguinaga has also been vital for the offensive unit. He’s thrown for 1,103 yards and nine touchdowns, with junior Nate Pauly being his top target (32 receptions – 389 yards – one score). On the defensive side, sophomore linebacker Sam Skwarlo tops the tackle charts, registering 83, including 13.5 for losses and three sacks. The secondary has been tough on opposing passing games with 17 picks led by junior defensive back BJ Harvey who has four.
