MUSTANG FOOTBALL
Morningside College begins a four-game October schedule this afternoon with a Homecoming 2020 match-up versus crosstown Great Plains Athletic Conference foe Briar Cliff University. Head coach Steve Ryan’s Mustangs return to action for the first time since overwhelming Midland University 42-7 on the road Sept. 19. The Chargers, coached by Dennis Wagner, sport an 0-3 record and were upended last weekend at Midland 56-3 in their most recent action. Series history has been all Mside, winning each of the previous 17 contests including a 49-14 decision at Briar Cliff last year.
MUSTANG MARKS Through three games, Mside has 28 statistical categories ranked among the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ top 10. On the team side, they are in the top spot in field goal and extra point accuracy (1.000); and fewest sacks allowed (0). Individually, sophomore placekicker Chase Carter leads the country in extra-point and field goal accuracy; junior quarterback Joe Dolincheck’s passing yards per contest (352.5) are also first; and senior wide receiver Reid Jurgensmeier’s catches (9.5), receiving yards (178) and points scored (21) per outing stand first nationally, too. The team’s 352.5 yards passing per game are second-best, while Jurgensmeier is second in total points (42) and all-purpose yards per game (178), and Dolincheck ranks second in total offense per game (362.5 ypg) … Senior student-athlete Niklas Gustav was one of nine NAIA representatives recently named semifinalists for the 2020 William V. Campbell Trophy presented by Mazda. Gustav was among two mentioned from the Great Plains Athletic Conference, joining Northwestern College’s Shane Solberg. The group was part of 199 designees from across all divisions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the NAIA to be honored. The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists in November, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2020 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class presented by Fidelity Investments. Later this year, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 30th Campbell Trophy® Presented by Mazda and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000 and receiving a 25-pound bronze version of the iconic statue. Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility, have a grade-point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers, and athletics
MUSTANG FOOTBALL administrators … The Maroon takes to the road next weekend for a 1 p.m. kickoff at the University of Jamestown’s Rollie Greeno Field. Morningside is back home Saturday, Oct. 24, as Dakota Wesleyan University visits Elwood Olsen Stadium for a 1 p.m. start.
CHARGER CLIPS Freshman quarterback Devrene Kahananui-Alejado has accounted for a rushing score, and junior quarterback John Bell has thrown for the other BC paydirt conversion. Fellow freshman Mar’Kaybion Wallace is the offense’s leading rusher (126 yards), and Bell has hit on 29 of 60 passing attempts for 255 yards. Senior wide receiver Ryan Kotey (12 receptions – 82 yards) and sophomore running back Dawson Forcella (nine receptions – 83 yards) top the receiving numbers. Defensively, the quartet of sophomore defensive linemen MJ Montgomery and Asi Tupua and junior defensive backs Donald Garland and Kadeem Muhammed each has 20 tackles or more. Montgomery has been extremely active with fourand-a-half tackles for losses of which two-and-half have occurred as opposing signal-caller sacks. Senior Robert Robinson, a third defensive lineman, has accumulated four tackles for losses and four sacks.
PLAYER PROFILE
FIELD FUSION UPPERCLASSMEN DUO STEPPING UP TO NEW CHALLENGE Senior Tyler Wingert and junior Cooper Von Seggern may have differing majors, influences in the game of football, and other areas. However, the word family and its connotation to the Morningside College gridiron program is a mirror image for the duo. “(We are) a huge family,” Wingert pointed out. “Everyone (here) are brothers --- if anything happens, (my teammates) are always there to help out.” “(As an example), we were staying in shape when shut down,” Von Seggern added. “Even though there was a time spent at home, (the team) was able to have workouts with limits.” The pair also share another role during the 2020 campaign. They’ve been hoisted into a more significant leadership role in the vital linebacking slot with the graduation of former standouts Jacob and Joel Katzer, among many from a talented Class of 2020. “(Joel and Jake) were such good leaders,” Wingert pointed out. “I’ve been patterning myself along the lines of what they did to help the team succeed, and making sure the defense strives to be the best it can be.” “(For me personally), I’m trying to lead by example,” Von Seggern admitted. “Tyler and the rest can be vocal, which is something we’ll need. I like to do it first and have people follow (behind me).” On the field, their experience is a boon for co-defensive coordinators Casey Jacobsen and Nathan Turner. Wingert has donned the Maroon uniform in 30 games over three previous seasons, registering 57 tackles, which included a single-seasonbest 29 a year ago. Von Seggern has made a splash in just two seasons with the Mustangs, playing in 19 contests and being a source of discomfort for opposing offenses due to five tackles for losses in the span. Von Seggern’s gridiron story is a fascinating one. Playing for small school Wisner-Pilger of the Nebraska High School Activities Association, he was a quarterback, linebacker, and safety as a jack of all trades standout. He indicated the transition to a permanent linebacker role when he arrived in Sioux City wasn’t too tricky. “I was bumped up in high school to do the same,” he reminisced. “(When I got Morningside), I was a step too slow for safety. Overall, I enjoy everything about playing linebacker. You get to light your hair on fire and go wild.” Wingert, starring for the Ridge View High School program in his hometown, has been immersed in the pigskin life, just like his teammate, from a young age.
COOPER VON SEGGERN
TYLER WINGERT
“(I think the first time I played) was in third grade (in the local pee wee program),” he said. “I’ve loved it ever since --- playing or watching; it doesn’t matter as long as I’m around football; it’s great.” Beyond their love of the gridiron, in which Wingert shares Von Seggern’s gladiator-like view of linebacker saying, “It’s just fun to step and back and hit people, which is what our job is,” enjoyment of the outdoor life is a similarity for the two. According to Wingert, it doesn’t stop with them, either. “I’ve been an avid fisherman since I was little,” he said. “I especially enjoy ice fishing, as I always went with my grandpa. (Senior offensive lineman Hunter Behrens) and I, who share a house with a few others off-campus, realized early on we had similar interests in this area.” Von Seggern’s outdoor experiences focus elsewhere. He owns a German shorthair dog to aid in his hunting adventures. “Anything outside is okay, though,” he noted. More connections between two Morningside College football teammates --- keeping the family theme more robust and more durable.

REYNDERS SET FOR 2021 INDUCTION INTO NAIA HALL OF FAME Morningside College President John Reynders has been selected as an inductee into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Hall of Fame according to a national office release Tuesday, Sept. 15. “President Reynders puts students at the center of every decision he makes, and his work with athletics is no exception,” said Vice President for Student Life & Enrollment Terri Curry. “His vision for Morningside Athletics has completely transformed athletics, our campus, and the student experience at Morningside, and his efforts make him most deserving of this honor.” He is the fourth Morningside College NAIA Hall of Fame honoree, joining former studentathlete and Major League Baseball pitcher Paul Splittorff; former baseball coach Don Protexter; and former men’s basketball coach A.W. Buckingham. Reynders work in athletics has been a catalyst for much success within the Morningside program. He oversaw the successful transition of Morningside athletics from NCAA Division II to the NAIA, which resulted in the college going from 12 teams in 2000 to 28 sports in 2019. During that time, the Mustangs have claimed four NAIA women’s basketball national championships, two NAIA football national titles, were awarded the Great Plains Athletic Conference All-Sports trophy six of the last nine years, and earned dozens of individual national championship placings, as well as national recognition for academic performance and character programs. Reynders has served the national association on multiple levels. He’s been chair of the NAIA Council of Presidents and a Council of Presidents’ Chair-Elect while being a member of the Council of Presidents’ Executive Committee. He has held roles with the Growth Advisory Panel; Drug Testing & Education Committee; Membership Committee; Football Championship Task Force; Eligibility Task Force; and has been an advisor to the Competitive Experience Committee. He was named the 12th president of Morningside College in 1999. His 21-year tenure is the longest in the history of Morningside and has been a period of significant transformation on campus. Reynders arrival came at a time when Morningside found itself at a crossroads. After years of deficit spending and declining enrollment, bold action was needed to ensure the college would be able to continue carrying out its mission. Undaunted, Reynders quickly acted. He banded together with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the board of directors to develop a plan that focused on improving aging campus facilities to enhance the overall Morningside experience while making the college more attractive to prospective students and the community. Over the next 15 years, every single acre of campus would be remodeled and reoriented to place students at the center. More than $125 million was raised, with $70 million dedicated to new and renovated facilities. As the campus transformed during that time, so did enrollment numbers. Undergraduate students grew from a low of 744 students in 2001 to 1,329 in 2016, and graduate students have exceeded the population of undergraduate students every year since 2013, giving Morningside a total enrollment of more than 2,400 students.
MORNINGSIDE’S ACTIVE MINDS GROUP SPOTLIGHTS SPECIAL CAUSE With today’s celebration of World Mental Health Day, the Active Minds group from campus is providing mental health resources at a table outside the stadium. Pamphlets and cards are available as well as an opportunity to purchase buttons, stickers, and pins for a donation throughout the 2020 Homecoming football game. According to chapter vice-president Collin Adank, Active Minds at Morningside College’s mission is to educate students on the importance of mental health in order to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, to work towards enhancing the holistic well-being of students, and to create a supportive and well-informed community. The Morningside chapter upholds their mission by holding weekly meetings that include educational sessions as well as monthly events that engage students on campus. The Morningside Active Minds chapter has received multiple national awards as well as presenting at the national conference two years in a row.
