MUSTANG FOOTBALL

A set of back-to-back home games concludes the 2020 regular season. That span begins this afternoon with Doane University’s visit to Elwood Olsen Stadium. Head coach Steve Ryan’s Mustangs sport a 7-0 overall and Great Plains Athletic Conference record. The Tigers, coached by Chris Bessler, stand 2-5 overall and in the conference. A special celebration is part of today’s contest. The Mustangs football, competitive cheer, and competitive dance programs honor the Class of 2021 members on their rosters. A salute to the group is available on the back page of the GameDay section.

THE MATCH-UP Morningside owns victories in 14 of the 15 all-time meetings against Doane, including a current run of five straight triumphs. The Maroon claimed a 42-10 decision in Crete, Neb., last fall.

MUSTANG MARKS Sparked by the play of GPAC offensive and Defensive Players of the Week Joe Dolincheck and Niklas Gustav, Mside closed out its regular-season road slate with an impressive 56-22 win at Concordia University Nov. 7. Morningside’s vaunted offense nearly hit the 700 mark in total offense, finishing with 649 at CU’s Bulldog Stadium. Meanwhile, the defense held the hosts to only 15 yards rushing and limited them to 12 points over the final three quarters after they posted 10 in the first 15 minutes. A pair of Maroon-clad athletes hit personal milestones, with one being a program record. Gustav, dragging down Concordia quarterback Blake Culbert twice, surpassed former career sacks leader Bob McCabe by moving to 23.5. Reid Jurgensmeier, another member of the Class of 2021, became the second person in school history to reach 50 touchdown receptions, logging his ninth successive 100-yard-plus contest and hauling in two scoring strikes. The Mustangs had a surplus of superlatives beyond that duo. Dolincheck threw for better than 400 yards for the second time in his career, going for 442 and three touchdowns; freshman wide receiver Zach Norton and junior wide receiver Jamal Albousafi benefitted along with Jurgensmeier from Dolincheck’s big afternoon, as Norton recorded five catches for 115 yards and a touchdown, and Albousafi tallied 10 for 97; senior running back Arnijae “AP” Ponder crept ever so close to 5000 career rushing yards, moving within 28 with a 157-yard, three-touchdown day. The Mustang defense totaled 11 tackles for Concordia losses

MUSTANG FOOTBALL to 28 lost yards and turned the home team over once with an interception. Last weekend’s numbers further strengthened Morningside’s high rent residency on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics statistics. The team is first in total pass offense (2,484 yards), passing yards per contest (354.9), and total offense per outing (544.9). They’re a close second in scoring offense (356 points) and fewest sacks allowed (.3 pg). The Mustangs’ defensive stalwarts have also contributed to top-notch listings, as their sacks per game output (four) is second-highest and their total sack numbers (28) are third-best. Individually, Jurgensmeier leads the nation in total (102 points) and per game (14 points) scoring; Dolincheck’s 2,332 yards through the air are first, and junior defensive back Drew Bessey’s four interceptions top the category. Morningside’s regular season winds up Saturday, Nov. 21, in a rescheduled conference clash with Hastings College. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Elwood Olsen Stadium.

TIGER TALES A balanced rushing attack has been the cornerstone of the DU offense this season. Seniors Jamaine Derogene and Jacobi White and sophomores Adam Wasserman and Frazzie Wynn have each accumulated 100-or-more yards this year. Derogene leads the quartet with 428, which includes five touchdowns. Wasserman’s shown potential as a dual-threat, also throwing for seven scores at his quarterback slot. On the defensive side, senior linebacker Riley Heithoff has registered 66 tackles, including 13.5 for loss and six sacks. Fellow upperclassman linebackers Mason Krause and Ryan Lasauskas are also above the 50-tackle mark.

PLAYER PROFILE

GUIDING INFLUENCES EVANS UNDERSTANDS ROLE MODELS IN LIFE, LOOKS TO RECIPROCATE IN CAREER At many of life’s intersections, Steven Evans has had role models. The examples are many. From his mom and friendly neighbors in his childhood home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to assistant coach Darius Hicks, the Mustangs’ cornerback has utilized those relationships to collegiate success on and off the field. “I’ve been fortunate to have many important interactions with people who have helped mold me,” Evans admitted. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without any of those opportunities.” Growing up in a tougher section of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., he and his friends’ options could be limited. However, with his mom and some concerned and family-figure-like neighbors, Evans and his cohorts could get into sports. “Sports and most importantly, football was a route for me growing up,” he reflected. “It kept my friends and me away from things we shouldn’t be doing. We’d just go outside and play, as we had people in the neighborhood looking out for us. My mom was right there, too, keeping her right hand on my shoulder --- pushing me to do great things and stay focused.” As he moved into a high school gridiron path, he caught the Morningside College coaching staff’s attention uniquely. “Coach Hicks found me through Twitter,” Evans reminisced. “He saw my highlight film and reached out. I’ve got to be honest when he contacted me. I didn’t know where Sioux City was. I didn’t even have a visit,” he added. “I decided to come to Morningside sight unseen and reported on check-in day. I never doubted my decision for a second, though. I’ve loved how close we are as a team and how much the coaches interact with us about the game and life. Yeah, I may miss walks on the beach and the warmer temperatures, but this Midwest setting has been good for me.” The influence theme didn’t end with Hicks on Morningside’s campus. Former standout Xavier Spann and his roommate and teammate senior running back Arnijae “AP” Ponder have been big keys to his collegiate career. “I was able to start as a freshman right up through now,” he said. “I had to learn a lot of things quickly, so Xavier was a huge help. I learned a lot from him and playing with him for two years. AP’s been very important, too. He could see how tough the injury was for me last year and encouraged me to stay over the summer and get some work in with strength and conditioning coach Aaron Jung. It made a world of difference --- I feel so much better.” Now, as he nears graduation next May with a degree in social and behavioral science, Evans wants to give back in helping others like he’s received.

“I’ve seen what can happen when people step forward,” he noted. “I want to have that same effect on others. I’d like to try a career path in either the U.S. Marshals, the Central Intelligence Agency, maybe somewhere in law enforcement, if possible. It’s time for me to give back --- Morningside’s shown me how important that is.”
