MUSTANG FOOTBALL

The October home schedule concludes for Morningside College this afternoon. The Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan University are the guests of the nine-time defending Great Plains Athletic Conference champions. Head coach Steve Ryan’s Mustangs, sporting a 4-0 record, top the conference standings by a half-game over Concordia University in the loss column. Head coach Ross Cimpl’s DWU team brings a 1-4 record to the FieldTurf of Elwood Olsen Stadium which has them situated eighth in the GPAC but only a half-game behind seventh-place Hastings College and a game removed from sixth-place Doane University.

MUSTANG MARKS Morningside has won 14 of 15 all-time against Dakota Wesleyan. The run of 14 straight triumphs, after a 33-29 loss on the road in 2002, includes a 69-0 roll in Mitchell, S.D., last fall. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ statistics have a heavy Morningside presence. Individually, senior wide receiver Reid Jurgensmeier, who is off to a remarkable start this fall, is first in receiving yards per game (150), touchdown catches (78) and points accounted for per game (19.5) among eight top five listings. Fellow Class of 2021 member Tyler Wingert is second in total sacks (five) and third in sacks per contest (1.3); junior quarterback Joe Dolincheck is second in passing yards per game (332) and third in total passing (1,328 yards) as part of five first five marks; and senior running back Arnijae “AP” Ponder is third in points accounted for per game (12) and fifth in total scoring (48 points) to highlight four top five listings. Along team lines, Mside is first in fewest sacks allowed overall and per game (zero) and second in sacks per game (4.3), scoring (52.3 ppg), third down conversion percentage (55.6) and passing yards per game (368.3) to headline 13 first five rankings. Game accolades have not been in short supply in 2020. The theme continued last weekend at the University of Jamestown in a 54-7 victory. Dolincheck added an 18th straight 200-yards-or-more passing game, going 25 of 35 for 358 yards and four touchdowns. Jurgensmeier continued his dominating digits with five catches for 123 yards and three touchdowns during another notable afternoon, as he tied former standout Kyle Schuck (2010-13) for second on the program’s all-time scoring reception list (47) and became the fourth wideout at Morningside to reach 3,000 yards. Senior running back Anthony Sims tallied his fourth 100-yard rushing effort, carrying the ball 13 times for 103 times with one touchdown to complement a 20-carry, 91-yard, two-touchdown day from Ponder. Freshman

MUSTANG FOOTBALL linebacker Jalen Portis guided the Maroon “D”. He finished with 12 tackles, five of which were solo. Wingert added nine tackles and was a big task for the Jamestown offensive front, garnering two and a half sacks. Junior linebacker Weston Schultz turned in six tackles and a sack joining junior defensive back Drew Bessey who was also tied for third in tackles. Morningside’s schedule turns to the road in the next two weeks. The Mustangs visit Dordt University Saturday, Oct. 31, and Concordia University Saturday, Nov. 3, for a pair of 1 p.m. kickoffs.

TIGER TALES Junior Zach Lester and sophomore Kiel Nelson have combined to throw for 1,000 yards this year for Dakota Wesleyan. Lester’s 758 yards and five touchdowns guide the tandem. Senior Spencer Neugebauer has been their top target with 37 catches for 401 yards and four touchdowns. Freshman running back Jarmin Arend has accounted for a lions’ share of Dakota Wesleyan’s ground attack. He’s rushed for 169 of the Tigers’ 299 yards and the lone touchdown. Junior linebacker Samuel Kretchsmar is the leader defensively with 40 tackles, four of which have gone for nine yards in opponent losses. Junior defensive back Jacob Zamora has also played a key role, topping a ball-hawking secondary that has produced seven picks with three interceptions.

PLAYER PROFILE

NEXT MAN UP RIOS ARMS HIMSELF IN LIFE AND ON THE FIELD WITH MUSTANGS’ MANTRA With an ambitious career path laid before him, Morningside College junior David Rios understands the need for preparation. After a modest freshmen campaign in which the now-junior saw time in 10 games with 11 tackles contributed for the Mustangs’ defensive unit, the Sioux Falls, S.D., native got a new opportunity as a sophomore. Like his plan of being a pilot after graduation, the sky was the limit. He advanced his skillset as a lineman playing on the edge as a defensive end last fall, stepping in for fellow Class of 2021 classmate Niklas “Goose” Gustav when he was down with an injury during Mside’s run to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ championship. The Dickinson State University of North Dakota and the Saint Xavier University of Illinois won’t soon forget the image of #44 barreling through their offensive lines to the tune of five-and-half sacks and seven-and-ahalf tackles for losses. “Hey, it’s always been the next man up mentality,” Rios reflected. “When Goose went down, it was my turn, and I was ready.” Rios added that it’s fun to be a part of Morningside’s program, especially on the defensive side. “I truly believe when we go out and play as a unit, the unison of what we do is amazing. It’s true, to me, that if one person messes up, a touchdown might be given up. Every play requires us all to be together.” Now, with 53 total tackles of which nine-and-a-half have been sacks, and 18-and-a-half have gone for tackles for opponent losses, he’s looked to by co-defensive coordinators Casey Jacobsen and Nate Turner as a key member and leader of the Morningside front line. This isn’t something he takes for granted, and he’s grateful to play a larger role this season. He has seen the game through new eyes since being moved down to tackle and playing inside, especially when it comes to rushing lanes. Rios’ understanding of the next man up mantra and gridiron togetherness has been part of his life since fifth grade. “I did step away from football for a little while, but I missed it,” he admitted. “I fell in love with the game from the minute I was around it.” Football opened the door to another passion – lifting. The sport of powerlifting, via the natural connection of working out for football, came to his attention during his high school days at Lincoln. “Powerlifting is just like football,” he said. “You have to take it seriously with training every day. I enjoyed the competitive side, but overall it’s led me to a lifestyle of wanting to keep in shape.”

His playing days will also serve Rios well down the road as the next man up in his family’s tradition of taking to the skies. He plans to attend flight school and become the fourth member of his family to be a commercial pilot. His grandfather and uncles flew commercially for Copa Airlines in his family’s home country of Panama and following in their footsteps has been his dream since childhood. Rios is confident that he’ll be able to lean on the mentality of football when he begins his career as a pilot. Commercial pilot licenses aren’t easy to earn and require a lot of airtime. But after his experience at Morningside, he’s not intimidated by a little hard work. “It’s all a matter of training and continuing to work at it – being ready to get my chance and take my turn when it comes.”

BASKETBALL TEAMS ON TOP -TIER LEVELS ON GPAC, NAIA PRESEASON POLLS Morningside College’s men’s and women’s basketball programs each received strong praise from the Great Plains Athletic Conference and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Oct. 14. Head coach Jim Sykes’ three-time defending conference champions were picked first on the GPAC coaches poll and received a No. 7 preseason national ranking on the NAIA’s first single-division poll. The Mustangs, who open the season Oct. 30 and 31 at the Kansas Wesleyan University tournament, received 96 ranking points and seven first-place votes on the conference list and 467 ranking points on the national poll. They were the second-highest listed former Division II program, trailing only Indiana Wesleyan University (No. 3). Head coach Jamie Sale’s Morningside women’s basketball program was tabbed for a third-place GPAC finish and ranked No. 24 on the national poll. They earned 108 ranking points and one first-place vote in the league, trailing only Dordt University, picked for first, and Concordia University, slated for a second-place ending. The Mustangs, who have qualified for national tournament action in every season since 2002-03, picked up 146 national poll points on the NAIA list.
