MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE GA M E DAY - M AY 1, 2 02 1

MUSTANG FOOTBALL

A clash of Great Plains Athletic Conference gladiators and top six-ranked National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics plays out on the Elwood Olsen Stadium FieldTurf this afternoon. The No. 1-ranked and two-time defending national champion Mustangs stand 10-0, while the sixthranked Red Raiders of Northwestern College sit at 10-1. A come-frombehind 45-29 victory over No. 7-ranked Baker University, replete with a 36-point second 30 minutes, led the Maroon to their fifth straight semifinal round appearance. NWC took down second-ranked Grand View College in a 27-24 thriller at Des Moines last weekend.

THE MATCH-UP With a back-and-forth 45-31 victory at the same venue in early September, Morningside upped its current win streak to seven against its league rival. In four of the last five meetings, the margin of victory has been 14-points-or-less. Mside leads 13-3 all-time. Finding the end zone five times in seven tries in the second half on April 24, allowing the Mustangs to move on in postseason play. Baker University, out of the Heart of America Conference, made it anything but easy for the home team and kept the partisan Maroon fan base in attendance on edge in the first half. BU entered the locker room at the break up 21-9 taking advantage of a defensive front that stopped the potent Morningside offense on downs twice and picked up a pair of turnovers to lead to three touchdowns. The script flipped entirely from that point. Ryan’s offense posted nearly 350 yards while co-defensive coordinators Casey Jacobsen and Nate Turner›s unit stopped the Wildcats cold. Baker garnered only one first down and didn›t find the end zone again until the home team had reeled off 36 straight points to lock up a ninth consecutive national quarterfinal round victory. Junior quarterback Joe Dolincheck, senior running back Anthony Sims, and the upperclassman wide receiver tandem of senior Reid Jurgensmeier and junior Austin Johnson made up a stalwart offensive quartet. Dolincheck, hitting the 3,000-yard mark for a second successive season, kept the Wildcats’ defensive secondary in knots, despite a first-half interception, with five touchdown passes behind 375 aerial digits. For a second consecutive weekend, Sims tore up the carpet, carrying the ball 36 times for 178 yards and a touchdown. Johnson, the offensive Player of the Game, and Jurgensmeier combined for 19 catches, 336 yards, and three scores. Sophomore defensive back Joshua Miller, gaining his second playoffs’ Player of the Game accolade, blocked a Baker punt that led to a safety, picked off a Wildcats’ pass

attempt, and tallied eight tackles. Senior linebacker Tyler Wingert was the defense’s tackle leader with 15, including a half-of-a-sack. For a second successive postseason, Jacobsen found his name on a wellearned postseason award on April 28. The American Football Coaches announced the 2019 FootballScoop. com co-Coordinator of the Year as the winner of the 2021 Spring AFCA National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Assistant Coach of the Year honoree. Eight individuals were nominated for their dedication to their teams and communities. Jacobsen is in his 17th season at Morningside and has been the co-defensive coordinator since 2010. He has helped guide the Mustangs to two NAIA national championships and 11 Great Plains Athletic Conference titles. Jacobsen oversees the Junior Leadership program for Morningside football. He talks to the student-athletes about being a servant leader in the community, at home, and on the football team. Through this program, his athletes have put together service trips to Kenya, Uganda, Cuba, and Houston, Texas. Jacobsen has also helped set up service projects to help with flood relief along the Missouri River in Iowa and organizes volunteers for the Food Bank of Siouxland and the Humane Society. Jacobsen’s defensive unit has four top 10 marks on the current national stats. They are fourth in total (35) and per game (3.5) sacks and seventh in fewest points given up per outing (15) and least rushing yardage surrendered per appearance (74.4). Two of the individuals that help bolster the Mside “D” hold down first two slots. Senior defensive end Nick Gustav has the second-most tackles for loss (18) and sacks (9). Junior defensive back Drew Bessey’s six picks lead the nation. The offense’s top listings are first in total passing yards (3,652), passing yardage per contest (365.2), fewest sacks allowed (two), total yards per appearance (554.1), most points (513), and points per outing (51.3). The passing combination of junior quarterback Joe Dolincheck and senior wide receiver Reid Jurgensmeier top the charts in pass efficiency (195), passing yards per game (337), and points scored by touchdowns and overall (120).

ABOUT THE RED RAIDERS Head coach Matt McCarty’s team also shines on the NAIA numbers. They have eight offensive categories that are among the national best 10. The senior aerial attack of quarterback Tyson Kooima and Shane Solberg holds down six top spots, too. Kooima continues his modus operandi of being a potent dualthreat. He’s rushed for 537 yards and seven touchdowns while throwing for 3,392 yards and 28 scores. Solberg is his top target with 73 receptions for 1,567 yards and 17 touchdowns. The defensive group for NWC has been challenging to the opposition as well. Junior free safety Noah Van’t Hof, freshman linebacker Parker Fryar and senior linebacker Trevor Roozeboom lead the unit, each having registered 70-or-more tackles. Northwestern has accumulated 63.5 tackles for losses and 22 sacks to go along with 16 interceptions this season.
