MUSTANG LACROSSE The 2021 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference season continues along with the Ravens of Benedictine College paying their first visit to Tom Rosen Field. Head coach Jack O’Brien’s men’s team and head coach Caitlyn St. Marie’s women’s team are coming off the programs’ highest single-match goal tallies, which occurred as part of a weekend road trip to northeast and southeast Iowa on March 13 and 14. BC, led by women’s head coach Amanda Magee and men’s head coach Will Garrett, stands 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the KCAC on both sides of the ledger. An underclassman combo of sophomore midfielder/attacker Brendan Rorabacher and freshman attacker Brian Nathaniel produced goals for the men’s squad at Clarke on March 14. Rorabacher, as part of a heaping helping of offensive output at CC’s Competition and Practice Fields venue, was a constant nuisance to the Pride’s defense during the matinee, which the home side captured by a 16-2 count. He fired off 12 total shots, seven of which were on goal, and grabbed seven ground balls. In his first Maroon start, Nathaniel was just as solid with three total shots, of which two were on frame. Sophomore midfielder Jay’Von McKinney continued his impressive spring with five total shots, three of which were on goal, an assist, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers. The women’s team was felled by Clarke 18-3 in the doubleheader opener. After the hosts scored in the first 20 seconds, the Mustangs answered right back with sophomore attacker Macy Hajek ripped a shot into the back of the Pride net for a 1-1 tie. The home side responded with a four-goal run that put them in front to stay. Sophomore midfielder/attacker Lizeth Hilario and junior midfielder/forward Ashley Wilcox also tallied Mside goals. Wilcox’s score was part of a strong stat line, as she also picked up two ground balls. Freshman goalkeeper Natalie Hunt had a personal career-high 17 saves and seven recorded ground balls. Georgesen put her name in the match headlines with two ground balls, an assist, and a caused turnover. Freshman goalkeeper Austin Streeter spotlights Mside’s men on the current national numbers. He’s 21st in total saves (25) and 18th in saves per match (8.33). Both of those totals are also among the national team first 25. St. Marie’s women’s squad has a similar theme. Freshman netminder Natalie Hunt is part of the top 10 in total (40) and per match (10) saves. Those digits are also part of the NAIA’s best 15 numbers. Morningside continues a run of three straight home twin bills Saturday and Sunday, March 27 and 28. Missouri Valley College is the Maroon’s guest to begin the weekend, followed by the University of Saint Mary. Both sets of contests are slated for noon starts.
ABOUT BENEDICTINE Coach Magee’s women’s squad, ranked fourth on the current NAIA coaches poll, is the league preseason favorite. They delivered offense and plenty of it in loop triumphs over MVC and USM to the tune of 48 goals combined. Ten team members have compiled four-or-more goals led by junior midfielder Natalie Wechter, who posted nine in three outings. Junior attacker Clare Ryan makes up a juggernaut one-two punch for the Ravens, as she has seven goals and 14 assists compared to Wechter’s nine successful offensive strikes and ten assists. Coach Garrett’s men’s side is topped by sophomore midfielder Jordan Rodriguez’s nine goals. Senior attacker/midfielder Joseph Doyle is next in line with a stat line that includes five goals and six assists.
