MUSTANG SOCCER A home and away span this week begins this evening for Morningside College. Northwestern College makes the short southeastern trek to Sioux City for a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader. Head coach Tom Maxon’s Mustangs men’s and women’s teams are both rolling, as the women have captured four in a row, and the men have won back-to-back matches to rebound from their lone loss of the year at the hands of nonconference foe Bellevue University. The visiting Raiders’ men’s squad, coached by Dan Swier, have won two straight and bring a 6-3 overall and 4-3 conference record to Elwood Olsen Stadium. NWC’s women, coached by Ben Karnish, are 3-5-1 overall and 3-5 in the GPAC, stopping a two-match skid this past weekend with a 1-0 victory over Doane.
MUSTANG MARKS Women - Another steady total team effort lifted Morningside into the GPAC’s first four Oct. 31. The Maroon pelted 15 total shots at host Dakota Wesleyan University, five of which were on the Tigers goal at Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex. Senior midfielder Oceanna Brenden, who topped the offense with eight shots, got one past Tigers’ netminder Alissa Betz in the 47th minute to break up a scoreless tie. On the other end of the pitch, senior goalkeeper Alexandra Homan continued to be nearly impenetrable. Securing her fourth shutout of the season, she repelled three DWU shot on goal attempts to ensure the 1-0 win … Saturday’s triumph ended a perfect week for Mside. They rolled past College of Saint Mary 5-0 Oct. 28 to begin the span. The two blankings continued an impressive run of over 230 minutes of opponents not cracking their side of the scoreboard … Through eight matches, the defense has played a prominent role in the Mustangs’ 6-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 conference record. The team is ranked in the top 10 on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics statistics. Their .75 shutouts per appearance are fourth-best, and their six total shutouts stand sixth-highest. Homan’s bedrock .160 goals-against average is fifth-lowest nationally. Men: A pivotal 2-1 win over previous fellow GPAC unbeaten Hastings College Oct. 28 spotlighted Morningside’s previous week of competition. A household name and a new shining star found themselves among the headlines. Junior forward Okan Golge added to his remarkable collegiate resume, posting a goal in a sixth straight and seventh match in his last eight outings dating back to the end of 2019. His successful offensive strike broke up a scoreless tie on the Olsen Stadium scoreboard in the 21st minute. Freshman defender Jonas Markgofed produced a critical second goal for head coach Tom Maxon’s Mustangs in the 71st minute. Already
