It’s the first home doubleheader of the season this afternoon when Midland University visits Morningside College’s Elwood Olsen Stadium. The two men’s teams are among five unbeaten programs regarding Great Plains Athletic Conference with head coach Tom Maxon’s Mustangs sporting a 2-0 overall and 1-0 league mark, and MU head coach Raphael Martinez’s Warriors at 2-0 overall and in the GPAC. Mside’s women (2-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 conference) are tied for the top spot with crosstown rival Briar Cliff University. Midland’s women’s team, coached by Greg Jarosik, brings a 1-2 overall and league mark to Sioux City.
MUSTANG MARKS Men – It hasn’t taken junior forward Okan Golge, the reigning GPAC Offensive Player of the Week, long to find himself back at the front of class statistically in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Even though Maxon’s squad has played only two contests, he’s first in points (3.5); goals (1.5) and overall (8.5), and shots on goal (5) per match while in a tie for second in regards to game-winning scores per outing (.5). He’s not the only Mustangs player living well, either. Freshman midfielder/ forward Victor Beker is tied for first in assists per contest (1), and fellow Class of 2022 member Moritz Lusch is tied for second with Golge in match-deciding scores per competition and is fifth in shots per match (3.5) … The trio also ranks well nationally. Golge is third on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ list in total shots and shots and goals per contest. In contrast, his game-winning goal numbers per outing are seventh-highest. Lusch is also seventh in gamewinning goals per match, and Beker is eighth in assists per competition.
Women A midfielder combination of senior Oceanna Brenden and freshman Sina Feeser finds itself among the GPAC’s statistical first fives through three matches. Brenden is tied for third in match-deciding scores (.33 pm). Feeser is tied for second in assists per contest (.67) … Senior goalkeeper Alexandra Homan’s, the reigning GPAC Defensive Player of the Week, play in net is turning heads on the loop and national numbers. Her three successive shutouts and a current scoreless string of 297 minutes and 34 seconds have her first nationally and in the conference in goals-against average (0.00).
ABOUT MIDLAND Junior midfielder Brittany Llanes leads the women’s team with one of its two goals in three matches: the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Presentation College Sept. 18. Junior forward Bailey Locano has the other score. On the defensive end, senior goalkeeper Rachel Thigpen has a shutout and a victory to her credit. Senior forward Mario Bueso has been a handful for opposing defenses regarding the Warriors’ men’s team. He’s registered four goals in four matches and added an assist for nine points. Liam Brandso, also a senior forward, has created a robust offensive tandem by tallying two goals. An underclassman pairing of sophomore Matthew Ricci and freshman Marco Moresco has combined for a shutout and two wins at the goalkeeper spot.
