MUSTANG SOCCER An away and home week for Morningside College concludes this evening. Head coach Tom Maxon’s Mustangs, coming off a split with North Star Athletic Association foe Bellevue University Oct. 21, welcome Mount Marty University to Elwood Olsen Stadium in Great Plains Athletic Conference action. Mside’s women sport a 3-1-1 record, and the men are 3-1. Head coach Carlos Saenz’s Lancers men’s team stands 2-4-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the conference, and head coach Neil Mancktelow’s MMU women’s squad has a 1-4 overall and 1-3 GPAC record.

MUSTANG MARKS The Mustangs women’s team piled on 19 total shots, 10 of which were on frame, but BU keeper Sabrina Staufenbiel proved to be octopus-like, covering the Bruins’ frame to the tune of eight saves Oct. 21. Maxon’s bunch, improving to 3-1-1 overall, finally found the back of the home net, as freshman phenom Sina Feeser, who has produced four points and two goals in her last three appearances, hit a rocket from 30 yards out that found its way under the crossbar for the winner in overtime. Junior midfielder Makenzie Homan led the offensive attack with five total strikes, three of which were on goal. Senior goalkeeper Alexandra Homan, her sister, relieved junior Sarah Finn who made her first start in goal for Mside in nearly a year, and got the win. Homan, whose 2020 season has been near perfect with just one goal given up in 425 minutes of play, shut down the Bruins for the final 45 minutes with five saves. Morningside’s win snapped a six-year drought in the series. Maxon’s men’s team nearly made it back-to-back victories in the series against the perennial NSAA and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ power. BU opened up a 2-0 lead less than 30 minutes in, but from that point, Morningside, looking to remain unbeaten, tallied two of the next three goals and had a late matchtying attempt on frame from junior midfielder

Moritz Lusch in the final two minutes that was saved to end a frenetic 3-2 finish. Junior forward Okan Golge tallied a goal for the fourth time in his last five outings dating back to the end of 2019, and sophomore forward Robin Thomala added the second scoring strike to continue a personal trend in which he’s produced at least one goal in back-to-back matches. Junior midfielder Nico Renzi led an offense that took 11 shots with three total attempts. Morningside continues a span of playing three of its next four contests at home Wednesday, Oct. 29. College of Saint Mary’s women and Hastings College’s men are guests of the Maroon for a 5:30 and 8 p.m. GPAC doubleheader.

LANCER NOTES The senior-freshman forward combination of Taylor Dunn and Tiana Bumbaca-Kuehl have accounted for all four Mount Marty goals through five matches. Dunn’s three scoring strikes are first for the Lancer women’s team. Senior goalkeeper Jamie Tebben has spent all 450 minutes in the net. Her 45 saves rank third in the conference. Junior defender Israel Jimenez and freshman midfielder Savas Di Lascio guide MMU’s men’s team offensively. They each have two goals to their credit. Freshman forward Joel Hofstetter has played an important role, too, with a goal and two assists. Mount Marty’s defense has been among the best in the conference, surrendering only 14 goals in eight matches. The goalkeeping duo of freshman Sotirios Gkosdis and junior Sebastian Aguero haven’t made it easy on opposing offenses finding the back of Mount Marty net, producing 66 saves between them.
