MUSTANG SOCCER Morningside College’s men’s and women’s soccer welcome College of Saint Mary and Hastings College to Elwood Olsen Stadium Wednesday, Oct. 28. Head coach Tom Maxon’s men stand 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, one of three programs unbeaten in conference action and the visiting Broncos and Briar Cliff University. The women harbor a 4-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 league mark, which has them situated sixth. College of Saint Mary’s women, coached by Jordan Irsik, sport 2-5-1 overall and conference records. Hasting’s men, coached by Tim Bohnenkamp, are 7-0 overall and in the GPAC.

MUSTANG MARKS The Mustangs hold a 7-4 edge all-time against CSM, but the two sides have split their last four meetings, including a 2-0 College of Saint Mary victory in Omaha a year ago. A 6-5 double-overtime victory at Hastings in 2019, which enabled Mside to claim the conference regular-season championship, ended a 12-match skid at the hands of the perennial conference and national power Broncos. Tonight’s twin bill is part of a home and away set this week for head coach Tom Maxon’s teams. They travel to Dakota Wesleyan University’s Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D., Saturday, Oct. 31, for 4:30 p.m. women’s and 6:30 p.m. men’s matches. Maxon’s men’s team holds down top spots on four conference statistical categories. Junior forward Okan Golge, whose 1.6 goals per match and 5.4 shots per outing rank among the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ top 10, is first in both categories along with points per contest (3.6). He’s also not far from first in shots on goal per appearance (3.4 – 2nd) and game-winning goals per match (.4 – 2nd). Behind his school-record-tying four-assist accomplishment against Mount Marty University on Oct. 24, senior midfielder Austin Lingle has zipped into first on total assists. Morningside’s women’s team has several individuals residing among the GPAC’s statistical first 10, too. Junior midfielder

Makenzie Homan and freshman midfielder Sina Feeser are tied for ninth in assists per match (.33); senior goalkeeper Alexandra Homan is second in goals-against average (0.21), which is ninth-lowest in the NAIA, and Alex Homan, Feeser, and senior midfielder Oceanna Brenden is tied for eighth in game-winning goals per contest (.17). The trio is joined by sophomore defender Logan Abernathy tied for eighth in gamewinning scores (one).

ABOUT THE FLAMES The freshman pairing of midfielder Abbey Wilson and forward Kylie Anderson has been an excellent CSM one. They’ve combined for five of the team’s eight goals through eight matches. A third newcomer, freshman goalkeeper Gabby Felker, guides the defense with 44 saves and a 1.38 goalsagainst average.

BRONCO BITS Freshman Lukas Goetz and senior Tom Steging are among one of the top forward combinations in the conference and NAIA. Goetz has forged seven goals, two of which were match winners. Steging has earned five goals and is HC’s top assistmaker (four) through seven contests. Senior goalkeeper Jesus Parra is also turning heads with a small .620 goals-against average and four victories, three of which have come by shutout.
