HEAD COACH MICHAEL MCLAUGHLIN In just his second season at the helm of the Mustangs, McLaughlin guided Morningside to a Great Plains Athletic Conference tri-championship and postseason tournament title. His two-year record as head coach is 17-13 which includes this season’s 13-6 mark which features a current dual win streak of nine straight. Earning his bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in mathematics, education, and engineering from the LeTourneau University of Longview, Tex., in May 2016, McLaughlin has established himself well on the tennis courts as a player and coach. He was an assistant coach for his alma mater from August 2016 to May 2018 and also served as an assistant at Snead State Community College of Boaz, Ala., from August 2018 to May 2019.

ASSISTANT COACH LARRY MASON A 1973 graduate of Morningside and one of the most successful players in the history of the college’s tennis program, he moved into the assistant role for the men’s and women’s programs prior to the 2019-20 season. Mason had been the head coach of both teams from 2008-17 and other points during his coaching career. He sported a 98-69 career record in 10 seasons as the Mustangs’ head women’s tennis coach. Mason led the Mustangs to six consecutive winning seasons, including a 53-17 record for a .757 winning percentage over his last four campaigns.

SWEET HOME ALABAMA

MORNINGSIDE JOINS NAIA CHAMPIONSHIPS FIELD A pivotal three-match singles rally turned the tide for Morningside Saturday, May 1. “It was crazy,” head coach Michael McLaughlin said. Every one of the women performed great. We had a lot of times where we had to battle back, as Doane had match point at number four and six as an example,” he added. “If we dropped those two, the dual would have been over. We just kept fighting, though.” The trio of sophomore Aleks Sadowska, junior Tenly Hansen, and sophomore Shelain Lewis brought back the Mustangs from a 3-2 deficit against Doane University in the finals of the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament. Sadowska fended off the Tigers’ Brylee Lauby with a pair of heart-stopping tiebreaker victories at No. 3 (7-6, 4-6, 7-6), Hansen concluded a remarkable feat of going unbeaten against league foes sweeping Nina Ngo 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5, and Lewis used a tiebreaker victory at No. 6 for a 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 decision that sent McLaughlin’s squad into joyful celebration on the YMCA courts. Mside’s ninth straight dual triumph began with the always-important doubles point. The tandem of sophomore Emily Clotfelter and freshman Jil Hellerforth claimed a 6-3 victory at the top spot. Sadowska and Lewis sewed it up at No. 3, winning 7-5. McLaughlin’s crew opened their stay at the tourney with an impressive 4-0 victory over Concordia University in the semifinals April 30. Hansen, Sadowska, and freshman Olivia Boudreau wrapped the decision with singles victories to go along with the doubles› point. “It means so much for the program to reach the national tournament,” McLaughlin noted. “As a second-year coach, it can take some time to get individuals to buy into what the process is. However, this group is picking it up already … listening to what myself and (assistant) Coach (Larry) Mason are telling them. The results are showing. It’s not just us preaching.”
