MUSTANG VOLLEYBALL The 2020-21 home regular season schedule for Morningside College concludes this evening with a Heart of America – Great Plains Athletic Conference meeting. Head coach Jessica Squier’s Mustangs stand 9-9 overall and have won six of their last nine. Peru State College, coached by Laurie Felderman, has a 2-13 record.
MUSTANG MARKS This is the second contest between the two programs, Mside claimed a 3-0 victory on the road 25-12, 25-10, 25-29 less than two weeks ago. Four team statistical categories rank among the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics top 15. Morningside’s 1,238 digs are fourth-best; their 835 kills are 12th-highest; Squier’s squad is 13th in assists (759); and the Maroon’s 19.05 digs per set sit No. 15. Junior setter Sabrina Creason leads the individual categories on the national report. She’s fourth in total (688) and ninth in per set (10.58) assists. Kayla Harris, also a member of the Class of 2022, is sixth in total digs (369), and senior outside hitter Krista Zenk’s 236 kills are 10th-most. The Mustangs have won four straight at home. Two of those triumphs, versus Doane University Oct. 31 and Mount Marty University Oct. 16, have occurred in straight sets. Morningside’s 2020-21 regular season slate is scheduled to wind up Friday, Nov. 13, when they make the trek to the University of Jamestown for a 6 p.m. junior varsity and 7:30 p.m. varsity doubleheader and await a rescheduling date for a JV-varsity double-dip at Hastings College in GPAC action.
Bobcat bits The defensive specialist tandem of sophomore Mattie Nichols and junior Cheyenne Birkle are among PSC’s leaders this season. Nichols’ 21 service aces and Birkle’s 234 digs are each among the national first 50. Junior middle hitter Jaddy Duarte has been a key cog for Felderman’s team, too. She has a teamleading 79 kills and 22 total blocks.
