MUSTANG VOLLEYBALL A span of three of its next four matches inside Allee Gymnasium of the RosenVerdoorn Sports Center for Morningside College begins this afternoon. The Mustangs take on the Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan University. It’s the second home appearance for head coach Jessica Squier’s 2020 squad, as Morningside stopped crosstown conference rival Briar Cliff University in four sets Sept. 9. Head coach Jessica Squier’s program has won seven in a row and is 26-1 alltime in the series against DWU. Three of the previous five match-ups have been close-knit though with four-set decisions.
MUSTANG MARKS Squier’s squad stands 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Senior outside hitter Krista Zenk continues to lead the league in kills per set (4.3). She is joined by junior setter Sabrina Creason (assists per set – 10.7 – 4th), and junior defensive specialist Kayla Harris (digs per set – 6.1 – 2nd) who are also among the best five … Creason and Zenk’s numbers also rank high among the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ stats. Creason is sixth in assists per set and seventh in overall assists (171), and Zenk is seventh in kills per set … Harris and Creason are reigning conference Player of the Week honorees after the Sept. 15 announcement. Harris gathered defensive accolades, and Creason was voted the top setter for matches played Sept. 8-14 … Today’s battle sees a pair of teams with even averages in kills per set, at 12.7, though Dakota Wesleyan holds a higher hitting percentage. The Mustangs will need to find a more substantial blocking presence this afternoon and moving forward, according to their head coach. “Our blocking is the weakest part of our game,” explained Squier after last weekend’s Dordt match. “We are very undisciplined in that area. We can and will do better.”… The University of Jamestown is scheduled to take the southeastern trek to Sioux City Saturday, Sept. 26. Match times are 1:30 p.m. for the junior varsity and 3 p.m. for the varsity.
