MUSTANG VOLLEYBALL Looking to reach .500 in Great Plains Athletic Conference action and stem a trend of dropping four of their first six matches, Morningside College hosts the University of Jamestown this afternoon. The Mustangs’ 2-4 overall and 1-2 league record has them tied for tied for fifth with Midland University. The Jimmies opened their season last night at Dordt University. Recent series history has been close-knit with Jamestown holding a slim 6-4 edge due to three straight victories.
MUSTANG MARKS Through six matches, head coach Jessica Squier’s squad has three individuals among the GPAC’s top five statistically. Senior outside hitter Krista Zenk leads the way in kills per set (4.2); junior setter Sabrina Creason is fourth in assists per set (10.9); and junior defensive specialist Kayla Harris, the two-time reigning conference Defensive Player of the Week, is first in digs per set (6.2) … The trio’s numbers each rank high nationally, too. Creason is third in total assists (272) and sixth in assists per set; Harris is seventh in digs (156) and digs per set; and Zenk is eighth in total kills (104), marking the fourth successive season she’s accumulated at least 100 … Morningside is coming off a split last weekend against non-league opponent Dakota State University and league foe Dakota Wesleyan University. Squier’s crew knocked off the Trojans in five, rallying from a 2-0 deficit, and was upended by the Tigers in four … Harris’ second conference weekly honor came about due to totaling 59 digs, with her effort of 35 digs Sept. 18 missing the school record by a libero in a five-set match by three. She averaged 6.56 digs per set in the span … The Mustangs have a home and away week next week, hosting Northwestern College Friday, Oct. 2, and traveling to Briar Cliff University Wednesday, Sept. 30, and rematching with DWU in Mitchell Sunday, Oct. 4.
