MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE MATCHDAY - MARCH 7, 2021

MUSTANG VOLLEYBALL The lone home spring date on Morningside College’s 2020-21 schedule sees the Mustangs welcoming fellow Great Plains Athletic Conference schools College of Saint Mary and Briar Cliff University along with North Star Athletic Association member Presentation College. The four teams will take to a two-court set-up inside Allee Gymnasium and the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center. At 1 p.m., Morningside takes on Presentation, and BCU faces CSM, and at 3:15 p.m., it’s Morningside against the Flames and the Chargers taking on Presentation. Head coach Jessica Squier’s squad take to the floor in competition for the first time since late November. They sport a 10-11 record. Briar Cliff, coached by Lindsey Weatherford, stands 9-15; College of Saint Mary, coached by Rick Pruett, has an 11-10 record; and Presentation, coached by Chelsey Albrecht, is 4-7. A front-line trio consisting of senior outside hitters Caitlyn Makovicka and Krista Zenk and freshman middle hitter Meredith Hoffman lead the Mustangs into the spring. Zenk finished the fall with 269 kills and 261 digs, earning first-team all-GPAC honors. Makovicka, a second-team all-league selection, tallied 191 kills and 119 digs. Hoffman has shown signs of promise with 155 kills and 34 total blocks. Junior setter Sabrina Creason has played a vital role for Mside, too. She was over the 1500-assist mark for the season in the fall and gained honorable mention all-GPAC honors. Senior defensive specialist Ashley Boer looks to add to season totals that include 172 digs over 18 matches played. The remainder of the Mustangs’ spring schedule includes a trip to Presentation March 17 and being part of a triangular scrimmage at Briar Cliff March 24 with the Chargers and Dakota Wesleyan University before moving into conference tournament action April 3 at top-seeded and No. 1-ranked the University of Jamestown in quarterfinal round play.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION Junior outside hitter Makenna Freeman leads four team members with 100-or-more kills for College of Saint Mary. She enters the weekend with 242. Junior middle hitter Elizabeth Dlouhy isn’t far from joining her teammate in the 200-club with 188. Among the individuals competing this spring, freshman middle hitter Toria Andre and freshman outside hitter Chloe Johnson had substantial fall numbers. They ranked second and third on BCU’s kills stats with 166 and 165, respectively. Through 11 matches, the duo of senior outside hitter Kayla Wolfe and junior middle hitter Constence Rollins top the Saints’ offense at 91 kills apiece. Rollins has also been tough to handle at the net defensively with 39 total blocks.
