MUSTANG BASKETBALL program’s 1000-point club. He’s continued a meteoric personal run of late, compiling 13 straight double-figure scoring games dating back to the end of 2019-20. He is the reigning Great Plains Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Senior guard Zach Imig, another member of the program’s Gretna pipeline, has moved into the all-time scoring top 15. His 1,284 points stand 15th and are 16 away from making him the 15th player at Morningside to reach the 1300 mark. Sophomore guard Will Pottebaum, who is third on the team scoring chart behind Brown and Imig, added a sixth straight double-figure scoring total at Briar Cliff. He’s averaging almost 15 points per game in the span. The Mustangs have captured seven wins in a row. That string continued with a 76-58 decision at BCU on Dec. 9. Head coach Jim Sykes’ squad, pushing their record to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the conference, turned in four players with double figures for a fourth straight game. The man leading the charge has become a household name of late. Brown rattled off his third consecutive double-double and fifth such effort in his last seven appearances, going 10-of-15 from the field for a 66.7

Morningside College’s final pre-Christmas homestand begins this afternoon. Concordia University pays a visit to Allee Gymnasium and the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center. The Bulldogs are coming off a men’s win over Mount Marty Wednesday and a women’s defeat at the hands of Briar Cliff last weekend. The Mustangs split the first edition of the 2020-21 River City Rivals series Wednesday at BCU.

THE MATCH- UP Due to CU claiming eight of the previous nine series contests, the all-time women’s registry between the two schools is closeknit. Morningside leads 16-15. Mside’s men, harboring a 21-6 series advantage, have won nine in a row against their southwestern foes. Three of the outcomes have been decided by single digits, including a heart-stopping 72-71 decision last December. History can be made this afternoon inside the paint. Senior men’s center Trey Brown is only five points short of joining the

clip while grabbing 12 boards, swiping a steal, and blocking a home team shot attempt as part of a 22-point night. He had plenty of help getting the Maroon to their final tally, as freshman guard Joey Skoff registered his best collegiate outing to date with 15 points off the bench; Imig added 13 and corralled six rebounds, and Pottebaum finished with 10. Head coach Jamie Sale’s women’s team, standing 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the GPAC, saw a five-game win string snapped with an 80-78 loss to Briar Cliff midweek. An 11-point deficit with 1:47 remaining didn’t phase them, though. Mside went on a memorable 15-4 run. It was fueled by a combined 12-point compilation from junior forward Sophia Peppers, senior guard Sierra Mitchell, and sophomore guard McKenna Sims to catch the Chargers 78-78 with 19 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, the final outcome took the wind out of the visitors. After a missed shot by the home team with just seconds left, an offensive rebound and put-back as the clock ran out left sent Sale’s squad back home with a challenging defeat. Mitchell and Peppers led the charge. Busting into the career top 10 in scoring, Mitchell finished with 26 points for her third 20-point-plus total in her last four appearances. Peppers, who’s also been on fire of late, turned in her fourth successive 20-points-or-more ending with 24. The Mustangs’ Swiss army knife had another stellar all-around line, tallying eight rebounds, four steals, three assists, and a blocked shot to prove her recent conference Player of the Week award Mitchell’s run of five successive double-figure totals has advanced her career bottom line to 1,625, good for ninth on the all-time list. Peppers has been just as impressive. She’s tallied seven games in a row with 10-or-more points.

ABOUT CONCORDIA Offense and a lot of it has guided head coach Ben Limback’s team, sporting a 9-2 overall and 6-1 league record, towards the top half of the conference standings. CU has scored 935 points in 11 games, which ranks fifth nationally. A big part of that is due to 121 made three-point baskets. The Bulldogs have five players who’ve hit 10-or-more, with two making 20-or-more in the form of junior guards Carter Kent and Justin Wiersema. They’ve got a robust inside game presence, too, with freshman forward Gage Smith at a double-double in points (12.8) and rebounds (10.9) per contest. Head coach Drew Olson’s women’s team, 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the GPAC, has been boosted by the guard combination of freshman Taysha Rushton and junior Taylor Cockerill. Rushton’s drained 20 three-pointers en route to averaging 13.7 points per appearance, and Cockerill’s 16.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest lead the squad numbers.

MIDWEEK MISSION Dakota Wesleyan University is the Mustangs’ guest Wednesday, Dec. 16. Game times are 6 and 8 p.m.
