MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE GA M E DAY - JA N UA RY 27 , 20 21
MUSTANG BASKETBALL 10, while the men have six such recognitions. For the women, their rankings are spotlighted by leading the nation in steals (259) and sitting third in assists (332) and made three-point baskets (195) to guide the team marks. Individually, senior guard Sierra Mitchell is the NAIA leader in treys (72), with her 326 points being the fifth-highest total. It’s all about the boards for the men’s best listings, as they are fourth in the fewest rebounds allowed (28.579) and fifth in best rebound margin (plus 12.684 per game). Senior center Trey Brown is among the first three in total caroms (199 – No. 3). Mitchell continues to close in on the program’s all-time made three-point record. Her total of 375 is just five shy of tying current leader Madison Braun (2014-18) and six from establishing a new standard. She became the seventh player in school history to reach the 1,800-point mark in last weekend’s win over Midland University. Her 1,804 total is sixth on the list. A 30-point fourth-period scoring outburst turned out to be the difference for the No. 11-ranked Mustangs on Jan. 23. With visiting Midland knocking on the door early in the final stanza, trailing only 56-53 with 6:46 remaining, they tore the knob off the offensive volume towards an 82-60 victory. Less than three minutes later, the home crowd witnessed a comfortable 68-53 Maroon advantage behind a 12-0 run. That stretch increased to 24-4, putting the home side up by 23 to wrap up Morningside College puts a pair of headline-worthy win streaks back on the line this evening as the Jimmies of the University of Jamestown visit Allee Gymnasium and the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center. Head coach Jamie Sale’s women’s program has won 11 in a row, the longest string since 2015-16, en route to a 17-2 overall and 15-1 conference mark. Head coach Jim Sykes’ men’s program has claimed their last seven straight to move them to 17-2 overall and 13-2 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
THE MATCH- UP The women’s all-time series has been nip-and-tuck. Mside holds a 7-4 edge due to holding three straight triumphs in their hand. That run includes a 68-61 victory in Jamestown in early November. On the men’s side, the Mustangs have a nearly similar 7-3 advantage. The Jimmies have made waves recently, though, winning three of the last five meetings with an 85-73 decision added in at UJ that began the 2020-21 series. The current National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ statistics report is aglow with Mustangs’ figures. The women have a combined 11 individual and team notations in the top

the clash. Three-point buckets were of a high commodity in the sizzling span. Mitchell and junior forward Taylor Rodenburgh each drained two, with fellow junior forward Sophia Peppers knocking down one. Peppers and Rodenburgh led the charge on the points column. Peppers tallied 21 to go with four rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Rodenburgh came off the bench for another fantastic outing, scoring 23 to go with five rebounds. She was nearly perfect shooting-wise, going eight-of-12 overall, including hitting on three of four from outside the arc and going a clean four-for-four from the free-throw line. No one may have been happier to be back in their home surroundings than men’s sophomore guard Will Pottebaum, though. Pottebaum finished the game with a new career-high of 32 points on 10-13 from the field, and eight for nine from threepoint range, leading the men to a 98-72 win over Midland on Jan. 23. The sophomore’s story didn’t end there, either. He became the fifth player in program history to make eight or more threepointers in a single contest. Pottebaum’s three-point field goal percentage was 88.9%, which is second-best in players’ program history with at least six made three-point field goals in a game. Junior forward Collin Hill finished in double-figures with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Brown added 11 points on five for nine from the field. Freshman guard Aidan Vanderloo also found himself in double-figure territory with 11 points on four for seven from the field and three for four from three-point range. Looking deeper into Morningside’s numbers, senior guard Zach Imig set a new career-high with 11 assists and became the fourth player in program history with 11 or more assists in an outing. Sykes’ squad shot 15 for 22 from three-point range for a clip of 68.2% as a team. That percentage is the second-best in an appearance in program history. Mside returns to the road Saturday, Jan. 30. They travel to Yankton, S.D., for a league twinbill against Mount Marty University.
ABOUT THE JIMMIES Head coach Danny Neville’s University of Jamestown men’s team continues to hang around the top half of the GPAC. Their 10-4 loop record, part of a 14-5 overall mark, stands third just a half-game behind second-place Dakota Wesleyan University and two-and-ahalf back of the Mustangs. Fans should be poised for a memorable battle in the paint tonight as sophomore forward Mason Walters and Brown, arguably, two of the best big men in the conference and region match up. Walters 238 boards top the NAIA, while his 437 points are fourth-most. The three-ball is a big part of UJ’s offense, as they’ve canned 183 led by sophomore guard Marc Kjos (40). Sophomore forward Hannah DeMars is among the GPAC’s most prolific scorers averaging 19 points per game for head coach Thad Sankey’s squad. She’s also been a tough customer on the glass with better than eight rebounds per outing. Sophomore guard Kia Tower has added an impressive line to the team’s 12-6 overall and 9-6 conference record. Tower averages 13.7 points per outing and is one of two Jimmies to convert 30-or-more successful three-point chances, with her 35 second only to fellow sophomore guard Macy Savela’s 37.
