MUSTANG BASKETBALL Morningside’s men, ranked No. 7 on the preseason National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ poll, is 4-1 overall and 0-1 in Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Mustangs’ women’s squad sports a 3-1 overall and 1-0 league record. Mount Marty’s women, coached by Todd James Schlimgen, stand 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the GPAC. The Lancer men’s team, led by Todd Lorensen, is 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The senior duo of guard Zach Imig and center Trey Brown have paced the men. Imig is fourth nationally in total steals (15) and ranks 15th in steals per contest (three). Brown’s six blocked shots and 69.8 field goal percentage are each within the first 35, coming in at No. 32. Guard play has keyed the women’s team over four games. An upperclasswoman trio of Tayte Hansen, Sierra Mitchell, and McKenna Sims are all in the NAIA top 50 statistically. Hansen and Mitchell’s blistering 66.7 percent effort from the outside the arc is eighth-best; Mitchell’s 11 made three-pointers sit No. 31; Sims’ 18 assists rank 42nd; and Mitchell’s 2.75 made treys per contest are 49th-highest. Morningside’s women opened a two-game week with a hardfought 74-67 decision at non-conference foe Dakota State University Nov. 17. Five players finished with 12 or more points in the win. Freshman forward Chloe Lofstrom turned in a career-best for points (15) and rebounds (eight). Senior guards

The 2020-21 home portion of Morningside College’s season begins this evening with Mount Marty University visiting Allee Gymnasium and the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center. The twin bill against the Lancers opens a run of three successive doubleheaders on the Mustangs home floor. Northwestern College follows Tuesday, Nov. 24, and Dordt University takes a southwestern trip Wednesday, Dec. 2, as part of the current home stand.

THE MATCH- UP Head coach Jim Sykes’ men’s program has a run of 19 successive and 24 victories in 26 outings against MMU. They swept the season series a year ago with a close-knit 91-87 win in Yankton, S.D. and a 91-72 decision at home. Mside’s women’s team, coached by Jamie Sale, has captured seven of the last nine versus MMU. They won both ends of the 2019-20 set (91-63 at home/64-62 on the road), but Mount Marty was a 2018-19 winner in Sioux City by a 62-57 count.
