MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE GA M E DAY - F E B R UA RY 9, 2 02 1
MUSTANG BASKETBALL It’s the home regularseason finale for National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ No. 9-ranked Morningside College this evening. Head coach Jamie Sale’s team, standing 21-2 overall and 19-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, has won 15 in a row. The visiting Flames of College of Saint Mary, coached by Kirk Walker, are 2-19 overall and 1-17 in the league.
THE MATCH- UP Mside has claimed all 14 of the previous series meetings including a 77-40 victory in Omaha, Neb., in early January. The last time the two league schools clashed in Allee Gymnasium of the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center, the Mustangs captured an 80-52 triumph in Nov. 2019. With two games left on the 2020-21 GPAC slate, the Maroon still has dominating stature on the conference numbers. They have the top scoring average (80.44 ppg), give up the least amount of points (61.61 pg), sport the best field goal percentage (44.3 percent), and dish out a league-leading 18.09 assists per contest. It’s the same story on the individual statistics. Senior guard Sierra Mitchell and junior forward Sophia Peppers are two-three in scoring (18.22/15.77 ppg), Peppers’ 48.7 percent field goal accuracy is third-highest, Mitchell’s 2.65 steals per contest rank fifth, and sophomore guard McKenna Sims’ 3.3 assists per outing are fourth. Mitchell’s personal scrapbook continues to grow. She is three points short of becoming the fifth player in school history to reach 1,900. The senior surpassed former Dakota Wesleyan University standout Amanda Hart for second on the GPAC’s
all-time three-point charts, moving her total to 395. Peppers is also nearing a career milestone. She is less than 50 points shy of hitting the 1,000 mark. Morningside drained nine three-point baskets and shot better than 48 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes to overwhelm visiting Doane University Feb. 6. They thrilled a home crowd by scoring 23 of the first 28 points and building a 46-18 halftime lead to help highlight Senior Day 2021 festivities. Senior guard Tayte Hansen had an afternoon to remember. She went five-of-nine from outside the arc en route to 21 points, which sparked the Maroon’s victory by an 8255 count. The bench came up big for Morningside, too, with junior forward Taylor Rodenburgh picking up 15 points, and sophomore forward Sadie Roth winding up with 12, corralling six rebounds and blocking a DU shot attempt. Roth’s effort this past weekend was a single-game career high in both points and rebounds. Rodenburgh who has turned into one of the conference’s super subs this season has been able to do so due in large part to red-hot free throw shooting. She’s made her last 19 and 27 of 30 for a high-flying 90 percent rate.
ABOUT CSM Freshman Honnah Leo has been among the stars for College of Saint Mary. She’s averaging 13.9 points per game and has hit 27 three-point buckets, both team bests. Another shining spot for the Flames is the inside play of freshman Lexus Redthunder and sophomore Clare Lewandowski. They each average nearly six rebounds an appearance and have both blocked 20-or-more shot attempts.
