A battle to go four more miles.

A red-hot 60 percent field goal shooting outing proved the formula for Morningside University Friday, March 11.

Naismith bracket second-seeded Morningside University and 10th-seeded University of Saint Francis of Illinois had the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national tournament Round of 16 on their pre-game calendars. At afternoon’s end inside Allee Gymnasium of the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center, the 2022 GPAC regular-season champions and postseason tournament runners-up booked their spot across town behind a solid defensive effort. USF held early advantages of 9-5 and 15-14, but with that defensive element in place, Morningside took off on a 12-4 run midway through the second period and didn’t look back. Head coach Jamie Sale’s Mustangs used stifling pressure to contribute to 21 Fighting Saints turnovers. Sale’s crew got the margin out to as much as 17 in the second half and managed to turn back a few Fighting Saints rallies to gain an 85-72 decision. Mside’s offense was guided by senior guard Sierra Mitchell. Stepping on the home floor for the final time in a Mustangs uniform, she left the host fans with memories galore. Mitchell scored 35 points, primarily due to seven made three-pointers, and grabbed four rebounds. The law firm of Lofstrom, Peppers and Rodenburgh pitched in their scoreboard influences, too. Senior forward Sophia Peppers scored 17 points while grabbing six rebounds, dishing out five assists, and blocking a shot. Fellow senior forward Taylor Rodenburgh, less than 24 hours removed from joining the program’s 1,000-point club, hit four treys as part of a 14-point afternoon. Sophomore post player Chloe Lofstrom rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points to add to six rebounds.

The Mustangs seeded second on the Naismith quadrant of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Championships, put four players in double figures in the friendly confines of Allee Gymnasium of the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center. The senior forward combination of Sophia Peppers and Taylor Rosenburgh helped pave the way. They each tallied 23 points as part of glowing statistical lines. Peppers added seven rebounds, seven assists, and two steals, and Rosenburgh hit the boards for seven caroms and picked off two steals. Senior guard Sierra Mitchell (15 points) and sophomore post player Chloe Lofstrom (11 points) were in double-digit territory. Mside’s impressive numbers were needed throughout. A gritty Iowa Wesleyan University squad kept their hosts within the 10-or-less range deficit-wise over most of the 40 minutes, including leading 8-2 early on due to 16 three-point buckets. A 16-2 stretch early in the final frame provided the knockout blow en route to a 94-71 final.

NOTES: Morningside dished out 29 assists, the most in a

game since 2019 … Rodenburgh’s memorable night didn’t end with her 23 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. She joined the program’s 1000-point club in the first quarter … The Mustangs captured a first-round national tournament contest for the 16th time in the last 18 attempts.

FROM WIRE TO WIRE Fourteen weekends removed from a 73-63 win over Dakota Wesleyan University, Morningside University put the finishing touches on the 2021-22 Great Plains Athletic Conference regularseason championship Feb. 12. Buoyed by three players winding up in double digits, head coach Jamie Sale’s Mustangs held visiting Hastings College below 10 points in three of four quarters en route to a 69-38 victory inside Allee Gymnasium of the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center. When the clock struck four zeroes, an enthusiastic home crowd was treated to a trophy ceremony for the 11th time overall and second straight campaign. The win was spotlighted by 16 points from senior guard Sierra Mitchell; a near-miss triple-double compiled by senior forward Sophia Peppers of 10 points, nine assists and eight rebounds; and senior forward Taylor Rodenburgh who came off the bench to score 10 points which marked her 11th double-digit outing of the season. Beyond the conference championship, another bit of history entered the doors of the RSC during the weekend set. As part of an 80-59 victory over the University of Jamestown Feb. 11, Mitchell canned her 498th and 499th career made three-pointers making her the most prolific long-range shooter in any collegiate division. She and Peppers both led the way past the Jimmies, with Mitchell totaling 20 points and Peppers producing a double-double of 22 points and ten boards.

NOTE: Mitchell returned after her record-setting night to hit her 500th trey versus Hastings on Feb. 12.
