Mount Saint Joseph Academy
A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Reconciliation was the path we traveled during the academic year 2023-2024. Like a compass, it pointed toward the direction we would journey so that all may be one. Since the SSJ Mission and Charism calls us to union – a unity – a communion that is built on reconciliation, we as a community paid attention to the root in the center of the word recon-cilia-tion. The root of reconciliation is cilia which means eyelash. When we are eyelash to eyelash, person to person, truly encountering one another, we serve the dear neighbor and recognize the worth and dignity of each person. Following the direction of Maxim 41, we navigated a productive and fruitful year.
Be gentle with yourself, the dear neighbor, and all creation. We are all still evolving.
With intention, time and practice, the Mount Community evolved. Transformed perspectives, relationships, and communication forged through reconciliation and through various encounters led to a growth-filled year. We honored 112 young women with exceptional achievements in sports, in the arts, in technology, co-curriculars and in so many other ways. These zealous alumnae set off to diverse and varied places to continue their education knowing deeply that on the education of women largely depends the future They received $23,570,131 in scholarships, and were accepted to 533 colleges and universities across the nation.
My arrival as the new President of the Mount coincided with the arrival of the Class of 2024. Together we navigated the halls of the Mount and the call to live the mission. As we evolved, we quickly learned that there is nothing permanent except change. Metamorphosis might be an applicable term for what transpired over time. In many diverse ways, as a class and individually, the Class of 2024 experienced incredible and profound change - transformation. Faithful to “educating founders” Mount Saint Joseph Academy helped to shape and empower these young women to be agents of transformation wherever they may find themselves not only over the next four years but throughout life.
I hope that as you browse through this edition of the Mount Magazine you will enjoy the memory of Commencement 2024 and all that continues to transpire at the Mount each and every day. The Annual Report provides a glimpse of the many constituents who generously supported the students in achieving their goals. As we continue to evolve, we recognize your dedication and commitment to the Mount that enables our students to become who they are called to be. Your generosity allows them to reach their fullest potential. We couldn’t be more grateful.
Yours in Saint Joseph,
Sister Charlene Diorka, SSJ President
Founders’ Day Honored with Reflective Walk, Inspiring Tributes, and a Celebration of Sisterhood
On October 11, 2024, the Mount Saint Joseph Academy community celebrated Founders’ Day, which is officially on October 15. This meaningful day commemorates the Mount’s rich history and the founding of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. The Student Leadership Council (SLC) led the entire student body on a reflective walk to the Chapel of the Sisters of Saint Joseph at the SSJ Motherhouse, on the shared grounds of Chestnut Hill College. There, the community participated in a special Founders’ Day Liturgy after which, Izzy Mellos ‘25 delivered an inspiring reflection, emphasizing the humble beginnings of the Sisters of Saint Joseph in post-war LePuy, France.
In her message to her sisters, Izzy encouraged, “Never let anyone hold you back, because you are a Mountie. The future of society largely depends on the education of women. We are all founders, and we are the future of society. As Mounties, with the fearless legacy of the Sisters of Saint Joseph and our unwavering sisterhood, we will continue to serve this mission with strength and compassion for generations to come.” Upon returning to campus, students enjoyed a dance party and service activities honoring the SSJ mission.

#MountSummerStories: From Courtrooms to Coral Reefs, Creative Writing at Oxford, and Art in Prague
Gabi Balaratna ‘26
Gabi spent her summer at the Future Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) Program! The program is offered by the Office of the United States Attorney in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Her #MountSummerStory shares that she was able to explore the structure of local and national government and interact with representatives from various agencies. A highlight of her experience was connecting with Mount alumna Judge Kelley B. Hodge ‘89!
Sofia Romano ‘25
Sofia Romano ‘25 shares her #MountSummerStory of spending three weeks in the Caribbean on a catamaran, where she earned her scuba diving certification and college credits in Marine Biology. Alongside eleven other teens, they explored topics like marine animals, flora, environmental issues, tides, and ocean chemistry. Throughout the trip, they also engaged in service projects, which included clearing a coral reef nursery.
Ella Lin ‘26
Ella highlighted a wonderful #MountSummerStory of studying the arts in Prague! Through the Council of International Educational Exchange (CIEE), she spent three weeks taking art classes ranging from printmaking and using drypoint linocut to painting still life and spray painting methods. She also learned various photography methods such as long exposure, working with a pinhole camera, and creating photograms. Outside of the classroom, the program led guided tours where Ella and her classmates explored the city of Prague and the towns of Kunta Hora and Český Krumlov.
Raegan Fleming ‘25
Raegan Fleming spent her summer at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) at its Opportunities Academy. During the week-long experience, Raegan and her peers learned about the GI system, the heart, forensics, and much more! As a mentee, she had the opportunity to shadow a doctor and a student-nurse for the day. The program has inspired her to pursue a healthcare career!
Ms. Janet Iafrate, English Teacher
In her #MountSummerStory, Ms. Iafrate shared a once-in-alifetime experience abroad, exploring her passions. She joined 80 others from around the world at the Creative Writing Summer School at Oxford University, Exeter College. Ms. Iafrate was able to attend classes, participate in daily workshops, and attend lectures on topics like world-building and publishing trends. She explains that not only did she and her peers walk away with a deeper understanding of storytelling, but the experience also helped her to rediscover the value of putting thoughts on paper, and how the practice can positively affect a person’s life. Fun fact: Ms. Iafrate walked the same halls, and garden paths, and studied in the same library as renowned writers J.R.R. Tolkien and Philip Pullman!
Emerson ‘27 and Quinn ‘28 Gorniak
Emerson ‘27 and Quinn ‘28 Gorniak share their #MountSummerStory of serving their dear neighbors. The two collected over 100 sweatshirts from family, friends, neighbors, and teammates to donate to the Sisters of Saint Joseph Welcome Center in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia.

You “May” now enter here—Clement’s Crossing
In May 2024, Clement’s Crossing officially opened to our school community—a new connector hallway with modern collaborative spaces that adjoins the two sides of the MSJA building. This project, the first in a series of plans to update the school, went through a thoughtful naming. Ultimately the newest corridor was named after the much beloved and memorable Sister Clement, who served at the Mount as its Directress and Superior General of the Sister of Saint Joseph. May all who pass through “Clement’s Crossing” remain mindful of her example of goodness, unity, and love.
Mount Magic Takes on Disney World
Mounties from the Class of 2027 traveled to Disney World in Florida for a fun-filled week building unity. We think perhaps they left a bit of our Mount magic in the most magical place on earth. The trip concluded with a dessert party at the French Pavilion and gathering to watch the fireworks together.
Mounties Embark on a Service, Justice and Faith Journey in Camden
This summer, eight Mounties spent a week exploring the connections between service, justice, and faith in Camden, NJ as part of the Romero Center Immersion Program. Led by Dr. Tamara Southerling and Mia O’Brien ‘25, the students visited various service sites to connect with community members. A group spent the day at Urban Promise, loading trucks with textbooks that will be donated to schools in Africa and assisted with cleaning up the facilities used for summer camps that welcome around 500 campers annually. Another group visited Inglis House, a long-term care facility for individuals with disabilities.
Campus Shine Over Summer with Camps, Courses, and New Future Leader Program
Summer at the Mount welcomed eager campers for another set of camp experiences ranging from building robots with the Firebird Robotics team and friendly scrimmages in Field Hockey, to letting their artistic creativity flow through a paintbrush or taking center stage with Glee Camp. Current Mounties enhanced their learning experiences through our Summer Institute program with incoming ninth graders getting academic enrichment and upper-class Mounties choosing diverse summer course options that allow for increased schedule flexibility. Finally, select eighth grade leaders joined us for two days of an inaugural Foundations for Future Founders program during which students had the opportunity to learn how the Mount shapes its future leaders and founders, and bond with their potential future sisters.

VALEDICTORY SPEECH
CONGRATULATIONS
TO
CAITLIN BIDDLE
Valedictorian, Class of 2024
June 1, 2024
In Little Women, Lousia May Alcott’s iconic Jo March wisely asserts, “Women, they have minds, and they have souls, as well as just hearts. And they’ve got ambition, and they’ve got talent, as well as just beauty. I’m so sick of people saying that love is all a woman is fit for.” Being a woman, at the very least, is difficult. An inherent aspect of womanhood is our drive; our grit; and our unfailing, though often debilitating, desire to prove ourselves. This desire manifests itself differently in each and every one of us. To athletes, proving oneself perhaps means achieving a new personal record, becoming captain of a sports team, or receiving an award or medal; to musicians, hitting a note that was previously difficult, mastering a new piece, or scoring a solo; to artists, completing a painting, a drawing, or a sculpture that took many hours, days, or even weeks. We have all felt the immediate gratification of personal achievement to some capacity throughout our lives, but something is irrefutably more special about being able to say that we have graduated. Reflecting upon our experiences at the Mount, I have realized why a significant component of our mission emphasizes unity and sisterhood. What we experience becomes infinitely more meaningful when we share it with people who understand us, look like us, or possess a shared identity. For us at the Mount, our shared identity is our womanhood. We bond over the challenges and setbacks that present themselves in the process of self-discovery and in the complexities of being a teenage girl. One of my favorite phrases that I, and likely many of you, have picked up from TikTok is “We were girls together.” This sentiment comes to mind when I think about my female friendships, particularly the ones that I have built throughout my years at the Mount.
Beyond personal friendships alone, however, I also think about all of us. I think about the fact that when we look back on our high school years as a whole, we will forget certain faces, names, and detailed memories, but something that each of us will not forget is the way that we felt. We will remember the excitement of Founders’ Day. We will remember the laughs we shared on Charity Day. We will remember the tension of being the first UNITAS group, and the relief we all felt after realizing that it really was not that bad. We will remember that we were not alone, that the memories we made were all unifying in their own way. We were girls together. Pulitzer Prize winning American poet Mary Oliver wrote, “Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift.” Much of our high school experience was consumed by universal illness, suffering, war, and conflict. COVID-19 particularly affected our learning environments, our attention spans, our mental health, and our overall cognitive development. Additionally, COVID-19 cemented the importance of social interaction and building meaningful relationships in our lives. Many of us unwillingly grieved the loss of our loved ones. Social exchanges became increasingly difficult when masks had to be worn and distance had to be kept. COVID-19 was a time of seemingly endless isolation and loneliness; however, it also opened up more opportunities for us to self reflect, develop new hobbies, and deepen our understanding of ourselves. Our bones became denser because we struggled, and our hearts became softer because we had a taste of life without human connection.
With the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war and Israeli-Palestinian conflict, education, advocacy, and empathy are more important than ever. We are called to be instruments of peace and change in a world that often silences the marginalized and remains complicit in times of urgent conflict and need. Clearly, we are blessed to live lives beyond the assurance of basic necessities. The pain that we feel for these communities is our driving force. Let us tap into that pain and channel it into future efforts of activism and advocacy. Let us be assertive about the changes that we want to see and be proactive with the methods that we undertake to effect those changes. We owe much of our inclination to service and our values of unity and reconciliation to the Catholic faith. The original six sisters of the Sisters of Saint Joseph were ordinary women. They were not wealthy or educated and did not have the proper resources to make their initiatives widespread. As a result of the religious unrest during the French Revolution, the congregation disbanded. Some sisters were martyred for their Catholic faith, some returned home, and others went into hiding. After the Revolution, Jeanne Fontbonne became a hero. She escaped the guillotine and refounded the congregation that would later spread across the United States. The six sisters were humble in meeting the needs of the people. They were merely witnesses to the unifying love of God and neighbor. We are grateful to our sisters and to God for teaching us the power of silent service, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Sometimes, God’s presence can be felt through those who mean the most to us. We are thankful to our parents and families for their boundless love and support, their sacrifices, and the hugs that always feel like home. We are thankful to our teachers for their extensive knowledge, expertise, patience, and resilience. We are thankful to faculty and administration for demonstrating the importance of discipline and work ethic and for being the backbone of our community. Last, we are thankful to one another. Stephen Chbosky, American film director and author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, wrote, “… even if we don’t have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there.” Let us take full advantage of the opportunities and privileges which the Mount has afforded us and dedicate ourselves and our careers to fostering change. The Mount empowers young women to learn and know their potential, and we each have so much of it. Let us emulate the wise words of Jo March, for we have minds, we have souls, we have ambition, and we have talent. Let her advice propel us into the next chapter of our lives.
The Mount has given us everything we need to be the future leaders and founders of our society. Enjoy and embrace the beauty and even the panic of what is to come. We, like our founding sisters, will shatter boundaries, overcome obstacles, and exceed expectations by proving ourselves as empowered, educated young women, whose voices will inspire unity and reconciliation in our global community. Congratulations, Class of 2024!

ALUMNAE NEWS
My name is Maria Termini-Romano and it is my absolute pleasure to introduce myself as your new Alumnae Board President.
It was with deep gratitude and renewed excitement that I, along with my fellow Executive Board members, Erin McCloskey Gerst ‘98 and Maura Ricci ‘11, assumed the leadership of the Alumnae Board this past July. We are honored to have been chosen to lead and carry on the Mission of the Alumnae Board by building upon the impactful achievements that were accomplished by our predecessors, Emily Kohler Marbot ‘04, Emily DePaul ‘01 and Tara Hank ‘12. We are grateful for their years of dedicated leadership and service to the Alumnae Association and the Alumnae Board and look forward to their continued involvement in both.
The MSJA Alumnae Association, which began in 1895, enjoys a rich tradition of serving our valued and cherished alumnae of the Mount for almost 130 years. While we share the common bond of Sisterhood through our Mount education, each of us has our own unique and personal experience, both as a student and as an alumna. Our theme for this year, Rediscover YOUR Mount Legacy: Past, Present & Future, calls each of us to seek opportunities to reconnect with one another and with our Mount community in ways that are purposeful and meaningful to us. The Alumnae Board is here in service to all of us. Through hospitality and kinship, we strive to offer a supportive hand back to the community and, in turn, to each other. It is our hope, that in this coming year, you will rediscover wonderful memories of your years as a Mountie, join us at some of our upcoming events and consider how you might share your gifts and talents, those seeds that were planted and nurtured here at the Mount with the hope of a fruitful harvest, to have an impact on the Mount of tomorrow. Through our shared Sisterhood, may we each find our own path back to the Mount and to one another as fellow alumnae and friends.
All the best,
Maria Termini-Romano ‘89, P ‘25
Alumnae Board President

SISTER CLAIRE HELENE SOCIETY
The S. Claire Helene Society has been established to honor those alumnae and friends of Mount Saint Joseph Academy who have remembered the Mount wih a planned gift or bequest. These gifts become a permanent part of the Endowment, providing a source of income upon which the school can depend and use for years to come. The Society is named in loving memory of a beloved Latin, French, and Theology teacher who inspired two generations of Mount alumnae.

Each day she might get to Book Club, write postcards for political candidates, have her senior “beer & pizza widows” for a Friday night Scrabble fest, lector at Sunday Mass, play weekly bridge, drive from VA to PA for Golden Girls and her 91 yr. old sister Madge Mansell Keehn ‘50. “Thank the Lord I went to the Mount, God bless you all!”
