“At school, I was encouraged to take the traditional A Levels followed by degree route, whereas I wanted to gain practical training, earn a wage and start with an employer at a younger age, giving me years head start on the traditional graduate.” Joshua Swindells, Advanced Mechanical Engineering Apprentice
“I’m really glad that I took the Apprenticeship route into management. I soon found out that a full time college course wasn’t for me, and it’s been great to be earning a salary while I got my qualifications. I’ve had to manage staff who are older than me and more experienced, and I’ve found that the skills and knowledge that I’ve gained by doing my Apprenticeship has really helped me to handle difficult situations. I’d definitely recommend Skills Solutions to anyone who wants to get into management at a young age.” Ben Mihell Management Apprentice.
“I loved the course I was doing through Skills Solutions. I’ve enjoyed seeing the creative side and testing my knowledge, and the NVQ gives me a qualification which is recognised around the world. I’m very grateful to my Assessor, she’s a star and I couldn’t have done it without her. Skills are a great company and give you the help and support you need.” Kerrie Deavall, Hairdressing Apprentice

“I started as a Marketing Apprentice with Economic Solutions in summer 2012. I had thought about going to University, but decided that the work based route would be the best option for me.
I’m doing a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Principles of Marketing and I’m really enjoying it. I’ve been involved in several interesting projects already, including a market research project, and I’m currently working to improve the way the company uses social media. I’ve recently become an Apprenticeship Ambassador and have attended several open days and recruitment events where I’ve shared my experience of becoming an apprentice. Recently I visited my old College to do a presentation on Apprenticeships and many of the students there were quite surprised at the different types of Apprenticeships that you can do. To young people leaving school or college, I would say think about where you want to be in a few years time and research the different ways that you can get there.

Apprenticeships The Basics
These three elements are brought together to make up the Framework. The Framework is accredited by the awarding body confirming that the apprentice has demonstrated the knowledge and competency needed in the workplace.
An Apprenticeship is a real job with a real employer where you will be paid, and work towards a nationally recognised qualification. The Apprenticeship qualifications are developed in partnership with employers so you will learn lots of different skills that are valued by employers. As an apprentice you will mostly learn ‘on the job’ and when you attend your ‘off the job’ training you will gain a deeper understanding of the theory and technical knowledge which underpins your Apprenticeship.
23
Put simply, an Apprenticeship is the best way for you to learn the specific knowledge, skills and qualifications required for your chosen occupation along with valuable experience on which to build your career.
Apprenticeships – The Basics
Apprenticeships – The Basics
Apprenticeships are made up of three major components: a competence element leading to a National Vocational Qualification at level 2, 3 or 4; a taught, knowledge based element leading to a qualification usually referred to as a Technical Certificate; and Functional Skills.
In today’s increasingly tough job market, an Apprenticeship connects you to employers who are looking for employees with the desire to learn and who have an ambition to grow into their chosen career. An Apprenticeship helps to: Get you into a job that has potential to grow Get you earning whilst you learn Get you skills and experience so you can progress Get you qualifications to open up more opportunities.

Frequently asked Questions
We’ve given answers to some of the most popular ones in this section, you can get in touch with us at any time if you have any questions that aren’t included here.
I’m 16 and leaving school this year, does an Apprenticeship count as staying in education or training? Yes it does, and so do all our courses and programmes for young people. What’s the role of the employer? When you start your job, your employer will give you an induction into the company and your role. They provide on-the-job training and pay your wages. You will have a manager at work who will be responsible for helping you throughout your training.
How long will my Apprenticeship take? The length of an Apprenticeship varies, depending on your existing skills, the qualifications that you’re working towards, and the sector you’re working in. Generally, it will take between one to four years. How much will I be paid? All apprentices get paid a wage directly by the employer. The current ‘Apprentice National Minimum Wage’ works out to just over £5,500. per annum for a 40 hour week. Most employers pay much more, with some apprentices earning £15,000 per year. What holidays will I get? Like most other employees, you will be given at least 20 days paid holiday per year as well as bank holidays.
25
0161 233 2656 www.skills-solutions.org.uk
How many hours will I work? All apprentices work full time, more than 30 hours per week. Where will I work? As an apprentice you will be working at your employer’s location most of the time. You may attend some off the job training at one of our local Training Centres.
Apprenticeships – The Basics
Apprenticeships – The Basics
Many of our apprentices have similar questions when they join us...
Where will I train? Most Apprentices attend some off the job training at one our Training Centres or at one of our partner Colleges local to you. The amount of off the job training will depend on which Apprenticeship and level you do. Some apprentices will complete all of their training in the workplace so are based in the workplace with their employer all of the time.

26
What is a Traineeship? A Traineeship is an education and training programme with work experience, designed to give you the skills and experience that employers are looking for. A Traineeship includes work preparation training, English and Maths (for those who need it), plus a high quality work experience placement.
What happens when I’ve finished my Apprenticeship? Career progression is excellent for apprentices, and over the course of their careers, those with an Apprenticeship earn, on average, £100,000 more than those without. Once you have completed your Apprenticeship, there’s the opportunity to carry on working, maybe get promoted or go on to higher education in a college or university. Depending on the level of the Apprenticeship you start on, you may have the opportunity to progress on to a higher level; there are a wide range of Advanced Apprenticeships at level 3 and a growing number of new Higher Apprenticeships at levels 4 and 5. An increasing number of our Apprentices are also choosing to take up a part-time degree course alongside their job. There is plenty of scope to progress further with Skills Solutions and beyond.
27
Traineeships will last anything from six weeks to a maximum of six months. Your work experience placement will be between 5 weeks and 5 months. The rest of your training programme will be tailored to your individual needs but could include some or all of the following: •W ork preparation training, to ensure you are ready and confident to take the first step in your career, such as an Apprenticeship. •E nglish and Maths support if you need it. •A meaningful work experience placement which gives you experience of the world of work. How will a Traineeship help me progress? Because your Traineeship is designed around you it will give you a good starting point from which to build your career. Your Traineeship will put you in a better position to compete for an Apprenticeship or another job.
Will I be paid? You will receive a weekly training allowance of up to £40 per week and help towards your travel costs. Who can apply for a Traineeship? You have to be aged between 16 and 24 years old and want to succeed. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t got any qualifications, or if you didn’t get the grades you expected from school, we’ll have a course or programme to suit you. How do I apply for a Traineeship? Contact your local Training Centre and talk to one of our friendly and highly experienced tutors. When you join us, they will agree an individual learning plan with you that will take you to where you need to be.

Achieving a qualification in Business & Administration is a great starting point as most organisations employ people in business administration roles. Administrators handle the day-to-day tasks in an office and make sure things run smoothly. Each company will require their Administration staff to carry out different duties depending on the scope of their business but nearly all employers say that effective administration is essential to their success of their business. You could be working as a Clerical Assistant, Receptionist, Office Administrator or an Administration Assistant and it’s likely that you’ll be working in a team with other members of staff. Much of your time may be spent on a computer and may involve typing up board meeting documents and putting financial information together. You could also be sending the daily post, or faxing and photocopying documents. This sort of work requires a strong sense of responsibility, accuracy and attention to detail and offers an ideal spring board to a career in business.
