APPRENTICES MAKE THE NEWS Pantone
AON & THE SKILLS COMPANY PROMOTE APPRENTICESHIPS Multi-national insurance giant Aon and Manchester United have joined forces to lend the full weight of their global partnership to raising awareness of the value of Apprenticeships. Before United’s home game against Stoke City, Aon apprentices joined John Shiels, the CEO of the Manchester United Foundation and former United kit manager Albert Morgan for a round table event on Apprenticeships. Later, during half time in the match, eight of the apprentices took part in a penalty shoot-out on the hallowed Old Trafford pitch. Aon’s Apprenticeship programme is managed on a national basis by The Skills Company. When the Government published the Insurance Growth Action Plan, calling on the insurance sector to double the number of apprenticeships over the next five years, Aon was the first global risk adviser to take on the challenge (Cont. page 9).

DECIDING WHAT TO DO There are so many options out there, sometimes things can get very noisy and it’s difficult to know what to do. Deciding between tea and coffee can sometimes be hard enough or deciding between Apple and Android let alone deciding what you want to do with the rest of your life. The main thing to remember is that it’s not forever. Many people change careers 5 to 7 times during the course of their working life and that’s not the number of times they change job you could probably double it for that. But how do they do it? There are a set of skills that transfer from one job to another, you just might use them in a different way but essentially it’s the same skill. These are known as transferable skills. Get these right and you’re laughing. You often hear on the news that employers are crying out for some of the basic skills and these aren’t the sort that are taught in an academic setting, they are the ones that come with the experience of working with others. An Apprenticeship or Traineeship are the perfect ways to prime these skills and set the foundation for your working life. When deciding which step to take first just remember that you can get a degree and go to university after you’ve done an Apprenticeship but you can’t do an Apprenticeship after you’ve gained your degree.

FRIENDS CARE FOR MORE THAN JUST EACH OTHER Good friends Fran and Charlotte from North Manchester have both started Apprenticeships with Tiddlywinks Day Nursery in Higher Blackley and don’t ever want to look back. After leaving school Fran started at college but soon decided that it wasn’t for her while her friend Charlotte was still struggling to get her dream career in childcare started. They both then visited The Skills Company to find out more about Apprenticeships. At the time they weren’t quite ready for an Apprenticeship so spoke to the team at the Training Centre in Harpurhey about starting a Traineeship, which would give them work experience while they gained their Level 2 Childcare qualification. They were unsure at first but it was definitely the right choice for them. A Traineeship at Tiddlywinks came up which they were both successful with. Fran said “all the people are lovely, they’re really, really nice and helped me a lot…while on our Traineeship we got help with our travel costs but now we’ve started our Apprenticeship we get a real wage.” Charlotte went on to say: “It was a really good opportunity, I’m so glad I went for it, I love it here!” Fran and Charlotte’s advice to anyone not sure on what they want to do next is:
“Think about what you’d like to do and then go to The Skills Company. They try their hardest to get you what you want and where you need it and with a Traineeship and Apprenticeship you get the experience you need.” We have some more fantastic opportunities with Tiddlywinks available now so check out our jobs pages and apply today.
BRIGHT SPARKS SHOW THE WAY! Four students who started a PreApprenticeship course in Electrical Installation at The Skills Company’s Greater Manchester SkillCentre in Trafford Park are celebrating their success after gaining permanent employment through the course. The four, who joined the City and Guilds 2365 course in Electrical Installation (Buildings and Structures) are all now employed on full Apprenticeship programmes. Daniel Farr originally started at college studying Sports Science but after working with an electrician over the summer he decided that learning a trade was really where his heart lay. Daniel got in touch with The Skills Company, did a one week trial with PC Electrical Ltd in Bolton and is now working as an Apprentice Electrician. He said: “I really didn’t expect to get a job so quickly. It was my first interview and the trial period went really well. I’ve been on the day release course at the SkillCentre and I’m enjoying it and learning a lot. The tutors really know their stuff and the group all gets on well.” Shortly after joining the course, James Furness was told that a job had been found at Forrest Construction. After a successful interview James was taken on as an Apprentice Electrician. James said: “I was really pleased because it was my first interview. It’s a very good company to work for, as they are involved in so many different projects so I’ll have the chance to work on all sorts of things.” Daniel Thompson also completed his Electrician course at Creative Support. He’s now working as an apprentice in their maintenance department. He said: “I really enjoyed the training course, I thought the training facilities were great and the tuition was very good. The SkillCentre mini-bus picked me up in
Stockport each day and took me home. I was really pleased when The Skills Company contacted me about the interview, and delighted when I got the job.” After Daniel Worrall from Stalybridge completed the course, The Skills Company arranged an interview at NEAT Ltd in Denton. Daniel was offered a two week trial starting in January, but he started his Apprenticeship within a week. He said: “I’m really enjoying the work. I’m working with an experienced electrician, and I’ve already worked on a variety of different jobs, including one at the AJ Bell rugby stadium in Salford.” Wiktor Morrell, from The Skills Company said: “These days, many employers like to host working interviews as well as formal interviews, and it’s very much a two way process. Students can see if the opportunity and employer is right for them and the employer can see if the young person is a good fit for their business. It’s been a great success so far for many of our students. Find out how our Pre-Apprenticeship courses can help you get started with the career you want by calling us on 0161 233 2656.

CREATIVE & NEW MEDIA
The creative and new media sector covers a wide group of businesses where skills and talents are used to create goods and services, both directly to the public and to other businesses. The sector ranges from businesses based upon cutting edge digital technologies within media and software design to more traditional fine art and design, crafts and performing arts.
KEY FACTS:
• Creative/New Media is a medium sized but thriving sector in Greater Manchester. The sector is forecast to grow by 2023, and sector assets include MediaCity:UK and the Sharp Project. • There will be a large number of opportunities in the sector as it grows, these will be largely high skilled jobs that will have potentially fierce competition so getting the right skills and experience early on is key. • Greater Manchester’s employment is concentrated in Manchester, with a third of employment, though Salford, Trafford and Stockport also provide significant opportunities. • In terms of skills, the sector generally requires a combination of creative and business skills, and there is a high demand for some specific skills such as in sales, marketing and technical development. • The median salary in the Creative, Arts and Entertainment industries is £23,000 per annum. • Between 2013 and 2023, an estimated 7,000 additional jobs are forecast to be created in the Creative/New Media industry.
SKILLS:
According to Career Point, skills gaps suggest that an increased proficiency in design, media and marketing skills is required within the sector in Greater Manchester which is exactly where The Skills Company focusses its training within its Higher Skills team. Other skill gaps include the understanding of different technology platforms and the ability to react to these when they emerge and also understanding
intellectual property rights. These gaps are often within existing businesses and The Skills Company can offer specific training for companies who wish to see how they can keep up with the changing landscape and make it work for their business. The sector is seeing a move towards an increasing proportion of the workforce being freelance which ties in with the Ideas Britain Project and Enterprise Apprenticeships giving young people the skills and opportunities to make the most of this fast paced industry.
OCCUPATIONS:
Occupations in the creative and new media industry include actors, entertainers and journalists all of which could be highly competitive. However there are many jobs related to these using creative skills which are often not only within employers working exclusively in this industry but across a number of businesses. APPRENTICES SETTLE IN AT FOREST SOFA Forest Sofa is a leading furniture manufacturer based in Manchester producing and distributing high quality furniture throughout the UK. Forest has worked with The Skills Company for several years in order to find keen, ambitious apprentices willing to take responsible roles within the expanding business. Chris Allen started his Apprenticeship working on the commercial side of the business www.ForestContract.com in September 2011, and has now become an important member of the sales team, recently celebrating his third year within the company. Chris’ job role involves new business development and account management and working side by side with commercial clients on projects ranging from £10,000 to £150,000. “Chris came to us as a young man with a desire to learn but very little experience in business. Through his Apprenticeship in Principles of Marketing he learnt a number of key skills which helped him develop into his current role. Luke started his Apprenticeship in November 2012 assisting with the development of the company’s direct selling brands The English Sofa Company and The Chesterfield Company. Now two years on, Luke is a valued member of the sales team, liaising directly with the public in both the showroom as well as responding to enquiries online, via email and social media. “Luke’s progress has been substantial, and largely due to the combination of his training with The Skills Company and the on the job training he received within our team”. Ryan Mohieddin Sales Director. Forest are pleased to work with The Skills Company, and the partnership has yielded excellent results for the company, helping them recruit and train two valuable members of their team.

NEW TOWERS PLANNED FOR SALFORD QUAYS Work will start in February 2015 on a project called X1 Media City. The project will comprise of four tower blocks, built at Salford Quays and made up of 1,036 luxury apartments, along with a private gym and cinema for people living there. The development is in the heart of phase two of MediaCityUK, new home of the BBC, which has 800 businesses on the site. This development opportunity will bring jobs to the area and The Skills Company hope that local people will be given access to this great opportunity. (Cont. from page 1) In March 2014, with the support of Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton, Aon launched a ground-breaking collaborative Apprenticeships programme as part of the Government’s ‘trailblazer’ scheme designed to raise standards and align Apprenticeships to the needs of business.
“I am in the very privileged position of working with young people on a daily basis,” commented John Shiels, Chief Executive of the Manchester United Foundation, at the event. “I find their in-the-moment energy, zest and optimism both contagious and inspiring.” “I am so grateful for the training and attention I have received as an apprentice at Aon” said Alex Lee, who was among the firm’s apprentices selected to take a penalty kick at half time of the match. “While my Apprenticeship has prepared me for a great deal of opportunities, nothing could have readied me to take a penalty in front of 80,000 fans.”
BUILDING A CAREER IN CONSTRUCTION DID YOU KNOW?
Construction is one of the UK’s biggest industries, with over 2.3 million employees and self-employed individuals already at work in more than 700 different types of job. Between 2013 and 2023, an estimated 13,000 additional jobs are forecast to be created in the construction industry across Greater Manchester. On a national level, the construction sector expanded at its fastest pace for seven months in August 2014 despite supply shortages holding back growth with the availability of both materials and sub-contractors dropping at their fastest rate since its survey began in 1997. “The sector is struggling to find enough skilled tradesmen to keep pace with new work and the labour market will continue to put pressure on costs until the next wave of apprentices begin to enter the jobs market,” said David Noble, Group Chief Executive at the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply. More locally, the North West’s construction sector growth over the next five years could deliver as many as 3,110 new jobs per year according to the latest figures from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). Interim figures from the Construction Skills Network (CSN) suggest that construction output in the region will increase at an average of 2.5% over the period. The infrastructure and commercial sectors are the main drivers in the region with public housing also showing steady growth. The Skills Company’s Director of Industrial Sectors, Cathy Broderick said “At The Skills Company we have always been passionate about ensuring Greater Manchester
has been ready for the resurgence of construction which is now coming to fruition. At our state of the art Greater Manchester SkillCentre in Trafford Park we have invested in this and are really excited about the developments across Greater Manchester for both our adult and younger students and the opportunities our training across the trades has given them to be ready for the workplace.” Both adults and young people can train with The Skills Company across a number of SkillCentres to gain either specific trade skills such as joinery, electrical, gas or in general construction skills.
KEY FACTS
• There will be a large number of opportunities in the sector due to its size and future growth. • Greater Manchester’s employment is concentrated in Wigan, Manchester, Trafford, Salford and Stockport. • It is increasingly difficult to enter the sector, and there is a high demand for specialist skills and generally for higher skill levels. There are, however, opportunities due to the Government’s focus on Apprenticeships. • The median salary for Construction in the North West is £26,000 per annum.

SOME HAIR RAISING TALENT ON DISPLAY A group of hairdressing students from The Skills Company’s Hair Academy in Manchester put on a stunning show at an event aimed at highlighting all their creative talents. The students who are studying for their NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing, were asked to present a unique creation on the theme of Christmas. In front of a packed audience made up of The Skills Company directors and managers, friends and family, and other students, each of the hairdressers and their models took to the stage accompanied by music they handpicked. After the models had done a short walk to display the style, the hairdressers explained to the audience the inspiration behind their creations, and the techniques they had employed. Louise Lowe, The Skills Company Training Consultant/Assessor whose students took part in the show said: “The students were doing really well and were ahead in their course work, so I decided to give them a chance to be creative and show off their skills. Some of them were quite nervous, and nobody wanted to go first, but once the event started, they all really enjoyed it. We had some brilliant hairstyles, including one on the theme of The Nightmare before Christmas!” “The purpose of the show was to boost the students’ confidence, and encourage them to interact with the audience in a way they wouldn’t normally have the chance to in a training environment. The show went very well, the students enjoyed it, and we had some excellent feedback from the audience, so I think we will certainly be repeating the show in the future.” In the coming months we’ll be holding Disney, Mother’s Day and Spring themes.
WORK EXPERIENCE PAYS LEWIS FINDS HIS KEY TO SUCCESS Lewis McCarthy, 18, from Wythenshawe, like many young people today had a difficult start in deciding where he wanted his career to go. He wasn’t able to finish school and tried a number of courses at college but dropped out of each as they just weren’t for him. After attempting to start in the world of work on his own he found that all he could get were casual or short term jobs. In January 2014 he took the step that changed his life and walked through the door of The Skills Company’s Training Centre in Wythenshawe to begin a Traineeship. The Skills Company helped Lewis to improve his maths and English and his employability skills and then found him a work placement with Timpson. Now Lewis has managed to secure a full time permanent role with Timpson in their warehouse. Timpson have more than 900 outlets across the UK and Ireland, offering a range of services including shoe repair, key cutting, watch repair, engraving, dry cleaning and increasingly mobile phone repair. According to Lewis they are a great place to work. Lewis said:
“Timpson have given me experience of working in the real world and hopefully a job for life. I came just for work experience and now I have a permanent job – it’s more than I ever expected” Steve Marsh from Timpson has said that “We see work experience placements as another outlet to integrate young people into the workplace and the real world. Many young people don’t know what the real world is about, and doing work experience really helps. It would be great if everyone got the opportunity.” “Since starting with us Lewis has matured and now settled down in his role and is much more independent and confident. Willingness to work is the most important thing in a young person, I can train them to do everything else. If the opportunity came at the right time, I would definitely take on another trainee or apprentice from The Skills Company.” The Skills Company work with young people across Greater Manchester who may not have had the best start and need a helping hand in getting their career off the ground. They offer help with learning some of the basics where it’s needed and offer support to find work placements which often turn into real jobs just like it did for Lewis. The Skills Company have centres across Greater Manchester, go to www.theskillsco.com to find a centre near you.
