JOBS NEWSPAPER SUMMER 2015 - ISSUE 2

APPRENTICES EARN £4K A YEAR MORE THAN GRADUATES IN FIRST JOB New research has revealed that apprentices earn almost £4,000 more than graduates per year in their first job. The study by notgoingtouni.co.uk polled 2,614 young adults, all of whom had started their first job after completing an Apprenticeship or degree in the last 12 months. According to the poll, those who undertake an Apprenticeship are likely to earn, on average, £3,729 more per year than those who have attended university in their first job role.

According to the survey, only 8% of the respondents who completed an Apprenticeship wished they had studied for a degree, whilst 33% of those who had graduated from university wished they had opted for an Apprenticeship. When asked to state why, ‘to save getting in to debt’ (31%) and ‘full-time education wasn’t for me’ (24%) were the most common responses amongst the graduates. Jayne Worthington, Interim Managing Director of Greater Manchester’s largest Apprenticeship provider, said: “The results of this survey clearly show that the Apprenticeship route is proving not only beneficial to companies who are investing in the future of their workforce, but also to the young people who choose this option. The vast majority of these young people remain in employment with the company they have completed their Apprenticeship with, have been earning throughout their training and go on to have prosperous careers.”

APPRENTICESHIP WAGE SET TO RISE IN OCTOBER It has been announced that the National Minimum Wage for Apprenticeships will rise in October from £2.73 to £3.30 per hour. A Number 10 spokesperson said it was the “largest ever increase in the National Minimum Wage for apprentices and will halve the gap with the National Minimum Wage rate for 16 to 17-year-olds, that will be £3.87 an hour from October”. The increase has been welcomed by The Skills Company as it really shows the value that apprentices bring to the workplace. Jayne Worthington, Interim Managing Director of The Skills Company, said: “This rise firmly puts Apprenticeships on the map as a viable progression route after school from the outset. Many employers are already paying much higher than this to get the best talent, which is especially important as the labour market tightens and employers have to work much harder to secure the talent to drive their business performance.” This rate is for apprentices aged 16 to 18 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. All other apprentices are entitled to the National Minimum Wage for their age.

GEORGIA LETS NOTHING GET IN HER WAY Georgia Haughton from Newton Heath didn’t take no for an answer when her college told her she would never have a career in health and social care. Georgia was diagnosed with an illness which resulted in her being wheelchair bound while at high school. Whilst the condition wasn’t permanent, there was always the possibility that it could return. At college Georgia was told that she could never work in health and social care because of her illness and so she was made to leave the course. After applying to lots of jobs with no success, Georgie got in touch with The Skills Company which is the best thing she could have done. She started on a work skills course and spoke to the Training Centre in Harpurhey about her wish to work at AJ’s Academy, a centre for adults with learning difficulties. Tim Hall, a Placement Consultant with The Skills Company got her a Traineeship at AJ’s Academy where she got some essential work experience and a foot in the door. Three months later Georgia was taken on as an apprentice and is now earning a wage and doing what she loves. Georgia said:

“I always go home with a smile on my face. I never thought I would achieve a career in care because of my illness. College told me I couldn’t do it. The Skills Company staff told me I would. They supported me and still do. I am so glad that I walked through their door.”

TOPS TIPS

CIARA KENWORTHY – FRETWELL BENNET

“I really enjoyed my Traineeship, it was a great opportunity and I’m now a hairdressing apprentice. The tutors have been really friendly and helpful, they found me my placement at Fretwell Bennett which is a really nice salon and everyone I work with has made me feel really welcome.”

EXPERIENCE IS THE KEY FOR SKILLCENTRE STUDENTS Matthew Brown was unemployed and was referred to the Painting and Decorating course by the National Careers Service. 28 year old Matthew from Little Hulton had done painting and decorating before but had no qualifications. Matthew said: “I’ve been on lots of courses before but this one’s been the best. The tutors treat you like adults and I’m learning a lot. Eventually, I’d like to have my own business, either in painting and decorating or in bathroom fitting together with some friends who are in that line of work.” Ron Barton from Trafford Housing Trust said:

Three students from The Skills Company’s SkillCentre in Trafford Park have been given a prime opportunity to put their learning into practice by Trafford Housing Trust. The placement opportunity involved the conversion of a ground floor flat in one of the Trust’s properties in Circle Court in Stretford into a meeting facility for residents and staff of the Trust. 16 year old Kane Best opted for the Maintenance Operations course because it offered a broad range of skills, and it would help him to decide which career route to follow for the future. Kane said: “I’ve been enjoying the time at the

SkillCentre. The tutors have been really helpful. The course includes skills like plastering, tiling, woodwork and bricklaying, and I hope it will lead to an Apprenticeship.” Anele Mthethwa, 30 from Moston, is also on the Maintenance Operations course. Anele has worked as a labourer on construction sites, and has done painting and decorating on a self-employed basis, but wanted to get some qualifications and a Construction Skill Certification Scheme (CSCS) card. Anele said: “The facilities at the SkillCentre were much better than I expected, and it’s good to be able to get involved in a project like this to put the skills into practice.”

“As an organization, we are totally committed to developing the skills of our workforce and the community… The project has gone well so far, and the students have worked hard. I’m sure that the practical experience they have gained here will stand them in good stead as they progress in their studies.”

HOW TO MAKE A SUCCESS OF YOUR APPRENTICESHIP 1. Have a positive attitude 2. Dress professionally 3. Introduce yourself to others 4. Go the extra mile 5. Organise your work area 6. Ask questions! 7. Make notes 8. Get stuck in from the word go 9. Arrange regular meetings with your manager 10. Take your apprenticeship seriously

SARAH BATE - KIDS AROUND THE CLOCK When Sarah was at school she didn’t do very well in her GCSEs, and found out later that she suffered from dyslexia. She joined the Skills Company on a six week Teaching and Learning course, after which she was offered a Traineeship at the Kids Around the Clock Nursery. After four weeks Sarah was offered an Early Years Practitioner Apprenticeship and was delighted to accept. All her training takes place in the workplace and she has regular visits from her assessor and constant supervision by qualified and experienced staff. In a typical day, Sarah will supervise the children’s meal times, organise focused activities and free play, carry out observations and assessments of the children’s development, and complete all the associated paperwork. Sarah said:

“I was unemployed for six months. I’m so glad that I’m now doing something really useful, and learning so much every day. Eventually, I’d like to get my Level 4, and one day I’d like to be running a place like Kids Around the Clock myself.”

IT ALL STACKS UP FOR NATALIE & GRACE AT MMU CHLOE CROMPTON – THE SKILLS COMPANY Chloe Crompton from Warrington is a Business Development Assistant at The Skills Company. Chloe has completed her Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Social Media and Digital Marketing and is now in the first year of a Foundation Degree in Business Management, one of the degrees offered by The Skills Company. Chloe’s work is varied, and includes updating content on the company’s website such as case studies, course information and news items or blogs, using a CMS platform. She also manages the company’s social media accounts such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, and creates email newsletters to send to clients. Chloe said:

“I think the best thing about my Apprenticeship is that it is so creative, one minute we could be learning about SEO and social media management tools then the next minute creating a website and blogging. I am really happy that I chose the Apprenticeship route because I have now found an exciting career that I enjoy.”

Natalie Renshaw from Oldham and Grace Robinshaw from Mossley were both unsure about what they wanted to do when they left school so just went on to college. After a short while both of them realised that actually an Apprenticeship route would be better in both the short and long term. Both girls are now working at Manchester Metropolitan University within their finance team. Their work involves dealing with accounts payable, student sponsors, staff expenses, taking payments from students, arranging credit plans, and processing refectory invoices. Alongside all of this experience both Natalie and Grace have gained their AAT Level 2 and Level 3 Certificates in Accounting and are now working towards their Level 4. Grace said:

“I feel like I made the right choice, as I’m progressing well in my career. At 19, I’m a permanent employee with a good employer and my

prospects are good. A lot of my friends are at university, and are struggling with debt and aren’t sure what the future holds for them. I think it helps to be in work while you’re learning because you can put your learning into practice on a day to day basis. You are also able to build relationships within the organisation you’re working in, and from that point of view, it’s much better than learning at college, and you’re earning at the same time.”

JOEL THOMPSON - THE BARBER SHOP, WALKDEN

Joel Thompson is a Skills Company barbering apprentice at The Barber Shop in Walkden. Joel was a finalist in the Student Barber Competition category at the British Barbers Association Awards that were held at the NEC in Birmingham on 11 May. Unfortunately, Joel didn’t win the first prize, but was thrilled to be a finalist and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Joel’s inital plan on leaving school was to study for his A levels and then join the RAF. However, a trip to a traditional barbers shop in Manchester changed Joel’s plans. Joel siad:

“The day I walked into the place, I just felt it in my bones that this was a profession I wanted to

learn rather than taking A levels. I duly applied for an Apprenticeship in September 2014 with The Skills Company and was successful in my interview. The next day I recieved a call to go to The Barber Shop in Walkden for a day’s trial. The day arrived and although I had a few nerves, I just knew this was the job I wanted to do;

ENGINEERING IN FOCUS

KIAN ENGINEERS HIS FUTURE

We are repeatedly told in articles in the press about the shortage of qualified engineers. However, the needs of the sector are changing more rapidly than the university courses can be modified. This means that an Apprenticeship is increasingly becoming the favoured option in this evolving sector. Doing an Apprenticeship in engineering gives people the opportunity to work in the sector and learn from professionals who have direct experience while getting a real wage, and the range of opportunities is growing all the time. After leaving school Kian Ghanian from Swinton started to do his A Levels at college but soon realised that they weren’t for him. Kian hadn’t really considered an Apprenticeship before as he wanted to get into engineering and thought he needed a degree. With the help from Business Adviser Phil Lawson, Kian is now an Apprentice Engineer with Magnesium Elektron, an operating company of Luxfer Group (NYSE:LXFR), a global materials technology company, specializing in the design and manufacture of high-performance materials, components and gas-containment devices for environmental, healthcare, protection and specialty end-markets. Kian is now earning a wage and learning the skills. He said: “The environment is great, everyone’s friendly and helpful. It’s a great atmosphere to be in and they’ve even said they’ll support me to go to university too!” Graham Bond, Operations Manager, said:

“Magnesium Elektron are committed to recruiting intelligent and enthusiastic young people through the apprenticeship route as we believe this is an excellent way to help us develop and grow the highly skilled and motivated employees that are needed to support the future growth of our business”

But what does that actually mean for young people? The first important point is that the new legislation does not mean that young people have to stay on at school or in a sixth form until they reach 18.
