Contemporary Ensemble
The Contemporary Performance Program, through its ensemble Tactus, is dedicated to giving advanced student performers the opportunity to study with expert faculty and to work directly with living composers. The CPP concert series presents knowledgeable performances of 20th and 21st-century masterpieces. Tactus performs regularly at MSM and has also presented concerts in Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall and at club venues in New York. Past concerts have featured both 20th-century repertoire by composers such as Webern, Schoenberg, Ives, Varese, Cage, and Ligeti, and recent music played with the composer present, including Elliott Carter, Steve Reich, Tania León, Charles Wuorinen, Jerome Kitzke, and Julia Wolfe. The group presents music by MSM faculty composers as well as improvisational works and pieces written by CPP students. In addition, the Contemporary Performance Program works with the Composition department to read and perform student compositions.
