Manhattan School of Music borders Riverside Park and Sakura Park—two beautiful green spaces—and shares its neighborhood with Columbia University, Barnard College, and Teacher’s College on New York City’s Upper West Side. Andersen Residence Hall, adjoining the school’s 1910 seven-story main building, is a dynamic 19-story building of performance, academic, and residential spaces, featuring five student lounges, a gym, laundry facilities, and 24-hour security. Cable TV and a refrigerator/freezer/microwave unit are available in each dorm room.
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT The Office of Student Engagement creates a wide variety of social, service, and educational activities. Along with the Dean of Students, Residence Life, and the Campus Health and Counseling Center, Student Engagement supports academic endeavors while working to build a sense of community and pride at Manhattan School of Music both inside and outside the classroom. 5

Welcome to New York City MSM’s location gives students the opportunity throughout the year not only to hear, but also to perform, music in some of the greatest venues in the world. In recent years, MSM student ensembles have performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Birdland, National Sawdust, the Apollo, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Students also perform as individual artists in venues throughout the city. 7

VOICE Maitland Peters, Voice Department Chair The programs of study for voice majors are designed to develop skilled performers in all areas of vocal techniques and to offer opportunities to perform. Stefon Harris, Associate Dean and Director Designed to develop skilled performing artists, composers, arrangers, and jazz educators in preparation for a professional career, the Jazz Arts Program is one of the richest of its kind for young jazz musicians. The program offers systematic and rigorous conservatory training, combined with singular New York City performance and networking opportunities. Student ensembles perform regularly at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola/Jazz at Lincoln Center, the 55 Bar, Birdland, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cooper Hewitt, and other New York City venues. For the 2018–19 season, guest artists included John Beasley, Billy Childs, Paquito D’Rivera, and Arturo O’Farrill.

Liza Gennaro, Associate Dean and Director Manhattan School of Music’s Musical Theatre program starts with the cornerstones of training—acting, singing, and dancing—but recognizes that our contemporary performers must also be trained beyond the “triple threat” model. Now more than ever, multifaceted musical theatre artists are in demand. MSM’s Musical Theatre faculty is a stellar collection of artist-educators who combine exemplary teaching with the highest level of professional know-how. In addition to acquiring essential skills as performers, MSM Musical Theatre students learn how to manage their careers, audition effectively, and negotiate the challenges of a highly competitive field. They are encouraged to develop their artistic interests and are given the opportunity to investigate areas beyond performing, including directing, choreographing, writing, and composing. We embrace individuality and honor each student’s journey. At MSM we are passionate about the arts and the next generation of musical theatre artists.

Glenn Dicterow, Chair The Graduate Program in Orchestral Performance, chaired by Glenn Dicterow, former concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, seeks to produce polished musicians of the highest artistic caliber. Students are prepared intensively in the orchestral repertoire for careers as symphonic players by a faculty made up of principal players of major New York orchestras. The advanced curriculum features master classes with principal players from orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra, as well as vigorous training in audition preparation.

Margaret Kampmeier, Chair and Artistic Director The Graduate Program in Contemporary Performance offers advanced performers the opportunity to focus on the music of our time through lessons, coachings, and classes with expert faculty. Students work with living composers, develop new works, and perform 20th and 21st century masterpieces in the critically acclaimed ensemble, Tactus.

study abRoad Manhattan School of Music offers students the opportunity to spend one or two semesters abroad at any of our nine partner conservatories in Europe and Asia. The program is open to upperclassmen and first-year graduate students.

humanities classes at Barnard MSM undergraduates have the opportunity to take academic Humanities classes at Barnard College during their junior and senior years to meet their Humanities elective requirements.

Outreach MSM’s Arts-in-Education program prepares students to be effective artisteducators by offering pedagogical instruction and practical teaching experience in New York City schools. The program reaches more than 2,100 New York City schoolchildren each year. MSM’s Community Engagement program gives students the opportunity to present performances to diverse audiences in New York City, sharing the healing power of music with underserved communities and those who are unable to attend musical performances on their own. Through the Outreach program, students are able to expand their performance techniques for diverse audiences in nontraditional concert settings.
Distance Learning Through live videoconference master classes offered by the Distance Learning Program’s Global Conservatory, students can learn from renowned faculty and artists and engage with fellow student musicians around the world. Through Music Bridges, students can expand their skills as teaching artists, presenting applied music instruction over videoconference to K–12 and community-based learners around the world. The Center for Music Entrepreneurship MSM’s Center for Music Entrepreneurship (CME) works with students and alumni to develop the necessary skills to help them create successful and rewarding careers. The CME’s offerings include: •
Career-advancing undergraduate and graduate coursework

Setting the Stage: a professional development workshop series in which entrepreneurial speakers, including many from the MSM community, share their expertise

One-on-one entrepreneurial coaching and career advising for students and alumni
•
Referral services for varied performing, teaching and internship opportunities

Resources, both online and in-person, for career and venture development
The CME, in concert with a range of MSM departments, focuses on turning ideas into action – it provides MSM students and alumni resources, “next step” mentoring and inspiration toward traditional and innovative career paths, income streams, and also business models that are transforming the profession.
