“YOUNG, GIFTED AND PALPABLY ENTHUSIASTIC MUSICIANS” — N EW YORK TIM ES

MISSION Manhattan School of Music is deeply committed to excellence in education, performance, and creative activity; to the humanity of the School’s environment; and to the cultural enrichment of the larger community. Recognized as one of the world’s leading music conservatories, MSM inspires and empowers highly talented individuals to realize their potential. We take full advantage of New York’s abundant learning and performance opportunities, preparing our students to be passionate performers, composers and teachers, and imaginative, effective contributors to the arts and society.

OVERVIEW Founded as a community music school by Janet Daniels Schenck in 1918, today MSM is recognized for its 900 superbly talented undergraduate and graduate students who come from more than 50 countries and nearly all 50 states; a world-renowned artist-teacher faculty; and innovative curricula. The School is dedicated to the personal, artistic, and intellectual development of aspiring musicians, from its Precollege students through those pursuing postgraduate studies. Offering both classical and jazz training, Manhattan School of Music grants Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees, as well as the Professional Studies Certificate and Artist Diploma. True to MSM’s origins as a music school for children, the Precollege program continues to offer superior music instruction to young musicians between the ages of 5 and 18. Manhattan School of Music also serves some 2,000 New York City schoolchildren through its Arts-in-Education program, and another 2,000 students through its critically acclaimed Distance Learning program.

VISION FOR THE FUTURE Looking ahead to Manhattan School of Music’s centennial in 2018–19, the Board of Trustees recently approved a new, five-year strategic plan to leverage MSM’s extraordinary legacy of achievement; strengthen its leadership; and enhance its recognition as a premier international conservatory. The plan seeks to polish and fully support the School’s already outstanding academic and performance programs, to undertake significant capital improvements to its historic facilities, and to advance its technological capacity and global presence. Under the leadership of Dr. James Gandre, who assumed the presidency of Manhattan School of Music in May 2013, the Board of Trustees with the support of the entire MSM community, is steadfast in its commitment to advance the mission that Janet Schenck established more than 90 years ago. MSM looks forward with enormous pride and excitement to the next 100 years.

DISTANCE LEARNING

CENTER FOR MUSIC ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Manhattan School of Music launched its groundbreaking Distance Learning Program in 1996, the first of its kind at a major conservatory. It continues to be preeminent in the field. Using state-of-the-art interactive videoconference technology to enhance MSM students’ curriculum, we have developed programs to connect students, educators, and distinguished artists around the globe. Our live webstreamed concerts and master classes, featuring MSM student ensembles and acclaimed faculty, now attract a worldwide audience.

In today’s marketplace, musicians need more than artistic excellence: they need the entrepreneurial skills and vision to build rewarding and sustainable careers. Focused on turning ideas into action, the Center for Music Entrepreneurship fosters the mindset, experience, skills, and contacts musicians need to create their own success. By offering “next step” mentoring and targeted services, the CME helps students and alumni create innovative career paths, income streams, and business models that are transforming the music profession.

OUTREACH The Manhattan School of Music Arts-inEducation program prepares students to be effective artist-educators by offering pedagogical instruction and practical teaching experience in New York City schools. Our commitment to arts education in New York City remains central to the mission of the School. More than 2,100 New York City schoolchildren participate annually in our outreach program.
