Berwald 3rd Annual Bull & Female Sale

Page 1

Dear Cattlemen, Neighbors & Friends,

Welcome to our 3rd annual bull and female sale. It is an exciting time to be in the red angus industry and we are grateful to have you here with us and appreciate your interest in our program. We are very proud of our sale offering and feel the numbers and phenotypes of our cattle speak for themselves.

We have built our program around a select group of genetics from some of the most well established and successful programs in the breed. With these base genetics we have gone into a very intensive ET and AI program to mass produce the kind that we like and know will work for our customers. Our main goal in all of this is to build a cow herd of very maternal females that can produce progeny with growth and carcass merit. Our experience milking 1000+ head of dairy cows has made us very aware of the importance of feet, legs, and udders, and has had a very positive effect on how we select and cull for structural soundness.

We were truly humbled by the outcome of our first two production sales, as well as being selected as the 2024 RAAA Breeder of the Year. Our commitment to this industry and desire to bring you the same quality genetics only in more quantity has been a goal, so we reached out and formed a partnership with Steve & Cynthia Maier, C-Bar Ranch, in Kansas. We also have a select group of bulls from Kirwan Red Angus from Bonesteel, SD, C & H Cattle Co. in Touchet, WA, and Pleasant View Farms in Somers, CT. This year we selected 120 bulls from well over 200 head of male calves to go on the sale and we are also offering 15 of our best registered heifers again this year, and back by popular demand we are offering a group of 55 head of our best commercial heifers... selected right from the top this is a pretty special set of females!

As all of you know, this lifestyle is a family effort and requires sacrifice and input from everyone. While I spend most of my time outdoors with the cattle, my wife handles all the bookkeeping and the kids’ busy schedules. Our oldest Jaylee (15) enjoys using the horses to round up the cattle in the pastures and is a big help working cattle in the yard. Jaedyn (9) is responsible for all the pet chores and makes sure the horses in the barn are fed. Jamison (5) and Jocelyn (3) enjoy riding around with dad, whether that’s in the chopper, feed wagon, payloader or pickup – learning all the ropes to be his future partners. Jaxson would have turned 13 this past year – he is forever loved and missed.

We would love to have you join us on March 12th, whether in person or by DV Auction. We are sincerely grateful for our loyal customers over the years and look forward to visiting with old friends and new on sale day. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to give me a call!

Sincerely,

Austin & Becky Berwald

Our extended family... we couldn’t get it all done without them.

Dennis Pederson... our right hand man, he worked for my grandfather, my father and now me. He has been a lifelong friend.

Jim & Seth Leachman... all bundled up this year for the sub-zero picture taking session!

Until

Mike Duenwald... he is our resident mechanic and when he is not trucking cattle he is our master pit boss on the barbecue... as is evident by the great food at our sale!

Roger Krein... our neighbor that farms and runs cows and loves the Reds. He and his son, Nathan, help with what ever needs to be done and are invaluable to have so close.

we meet again,

Jose Alonso... our animal husbandry specialist. He is an irreplaceable asset on the farm, managing the calving barn and making sure all the many moving parts on the farm are working.

Bridget Weese... our SDSU intern has been with us for 3 years now. She has been great help getting cattle ready for our sales.

farewell Jesus & Gramps...

It was a tough year at the farm as we lost two of our loyal employees and long time team members, Jesus Lopez and Gary Foster. They will be greatly missed!

Jesus A. Lopez 3/9/1969 ~ 9/23/2024

Jesus Lopez started here in 1997 and the feed tractor is a ‘98 model... he put nearly 50,000 hours on that tractor feeding our cattle! He was not a man of many words, but he loved his grandkids and enjoyed spending time working on his truck and watching the hunting channel. He was a great man that loved spending time with his family and friends.

Gary Foster 1/30/1949 ~ 2/12/2025

Gary Foster, known by all as ‘Gramps’, retired from farming in 2021 but continued to drive one of our silage trucks all summer and also helped deliver cattle during the winter and spring. He was very proud of the fact that he was a 4th generation Foster that owned and operated the family farm. He loved spending time with his family and he always kept the chopping crew in line.

ProS ..... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value).

HB ....... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value).

GM....... GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the post-weaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value).

CED Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. (Percent/High Value)

BW Birth Weight predicts differences in actual birth weight of progeny. (Pounds/Low Value)

WW Weaning Weight predicts differences in 205-day weaning weight. (Pounds/High Value)

YW ........ Yearling Weight predicts differences in 365-day yearling weight. (Pounds/High Value)

ADG ....... Average Daily Gain predicts differences in weight gain between 205 and 365 days of age. (Pounds/High Value)

DMI ....... Dry Matter Intake predicts differences in daily feed intake as measured in a feedlot during the post-weaning period. (Pounds/Low Value)

MILK ..... Milk predicts differences in weaning weight attributed to the milking ability of the animal’s daughters. (Pounds/High Value)

ME ........ Maintenance Energy predicts the difference in maintence energy requirements. (Mcal per Month/Low Value)

HPG ....... Heifer Pregnancy predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to conceive and calve at 2 years of age following exposure to breeding. (Percent/High Value)

CEM Calving Ease Maternal predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to calve unassisted as 2-year-old heifers. (Percent/High Value)

STAY Stayability predicts differences in the ability of an animals’ retained daughters to remain productive in the herd – calve every year – through 6 years of age. (Percent/High Value)

MARB Marbling predicts differences in marbling score – amount of intramuscular fat measured at the 13th rib. (Marbling Score Units/High Value)

YG Yield Grade predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade, which is calculated using CW, REA and Fat. (Yield Grade Units/Low Value)

CW Carcass Weight predicts differences in actual hot carcass weight. (Pounds/High Value)

REA Ribeye Area predicts differences in square inches of ribeye area measured at the 13th rib.(Square Inches/High Value)

- Right from a very early age, we knew that Eight Ninety was a pretty special calf, and it didn’t take long for the many visitors we had last spring and summer to find this guy. Everyone knew him as ‘890’, his recip’s tag number, thus his name. We have never seen a young bull with the hip structure and power that this calf possesses.

- He is no accident... rather the result of a planned IVF mating done on his virgin dam when she was just a yearling heifer. His ET sister made a splash this winter when she set a new level in the breeed, selling for a record $170,000 in the ND Red Select Sale to L.D. Herndon Farms in Georgia.

- His dam, Stony 2091, has been one of our most impressive females at every step of the way, including as a calf, as a yearling heifer and as a wet first calf heifer. Just like her son, she was a planned ET mating, stacking the great female maker, Bieber Hard Drive, with the proven donor, C-Bar Stony 837F, who has sons working at Ressler Land & Cattle in ND, as well as Sandridge Land & Cattle in OK. Stony 2091 already has six ET calves to go with her one natural calf and she is just a second calf heifer!

He brings all the good things that his sire has to offer with the extra length, power and flawless structure that his dam brings to the table, and check out his %Ranks amongst the breed!

- Back in our first sale in ‘23, we led off the bull and female portions of the offering with a pair of full ET siblings, Berwald Confident 2044, and Berwald Jaylo 2134. Confident topped the bulls, going to ABS in Wisconsin for $90,000, and Jaylo topped the females, going to R.E. Jacobson in MN for $85,000. She was succesfully IVF flushed at 14 months of age and bred back AI on the first cycle, and she did a great job with her first calf, raising a 764 AWW Motherload son. Jacobson’s have a powerful ET Mechanic son that will highlight their upcoming sale on March 20th.

- With his sire, Complete, dead and little to no semen available, many are searching for an alternative. We feel Finally 4084 can offer everything his sire dpes and even more.

From his powerful performance to his flawless phenotype, Lucius is a gorgeous bull with exceptional data and he is backed by our most proven, productive matron.

- His dam, Abigrace 0018 is one of the most stunning females you will find in the breed, and that is just the half of it… her progeny have generated over $200,000 in revenue! Her sons have sold into some of the most prominent herds in country, including Twedt Red Angus in ND, Barenthsen/Bullinger Red Angus in ND, Sandhill Red Angus in MT, Glienke Red Angus in IA, Griffin Red Angus in IA, Pleasant View Farms in CT, Weese Red Angus in MN, and Lautenschlager & Sons in WA. We sold a sister in ‘23 spring sale to L.G. Herndon, Jr. Farms Inc. in GA, and Abigrace 2024, is Austin’s favorite young female in the herd and has five direct sons selling in this year’s event.

- A couple of years ago we fell in love with the Maximus sire group at Bieber’s, so we came home and flushed Abigrace 0018 and Stony 0001 to him. Needless to say we still love his progeny and have two full sisters to Lucius at the flush center already!

This guy is a lot of bull for just an April yearling, and he brings outcross genetics on both the top and bottom side of his pedigree to the table.
