MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE Both of my parents are engineers and as a kid I always wanted to grow up and be like them. In high school I realized engineering was not for me, and instead fell in love with architecture. I felt like I was being like my parents but in my own way. Later I found out my grandpa was also an architect in Venezuela which only strengthened my love for design even more!

BACKGROUND I was born and raised in Venezuela. In 2003 we moved to California in search for a better life. In 2010 my family and I moved to South Florida to be closer to the rest of our family in Venezuela.

Started D1 at Broward College in 2015 Transferred to FIU in 2017 Expected graduation date: May 2020

HOBBIES I was a gymnast for many years, and once i quit I was offered the chance to coach. Being a competitive team coach was the most rewarding experience i could have asked for! I loved every second of my job; and i hope that soon I can go back to coaching part time.

As an ex-gymnast I always find myself doing handstands, or flipping anywhere I go. Gymnasticsis that part of me that keeps me young.

And thanks to ARCHITORTURE you can find me sleeping anywhere.

Or at Sephora, ready to try on the newest make up looks!

HOBBIES

Dancing with friends.

You can also find me paddleboarding on my free time (which is not often)

COLOR I enjoy bright, feminine colors. My favorite color is pink, however I only like it as an accent color: Lipstick, shoes, jewelry and of course... on my hair!

However when it comes to my home I prefer a neutral palette. Adding accent colors to the living room and dining room, while maintaing the bedroom with whites, beiges, grays and greens.

For the past 5 years I have been working as an Executive Assistant for 2 yacht brokers at MarineMax Yachts. At my job I have learned multiple skills that can easily transition into an architectural firm job.

Everyday I fall more and more in love with Yacht Interior Design.

I am sure that at some point I will find myself in that industry; but for know I am focusing on graduating next semester with my Master of Architecture degree!

CULTURE + COLOR

VENEZUELA

Yellow symbolizes the richess, sun, harmony and justice

Blue symbolizes the waters and skies that surround our nation

VENEZUELA Red symbolizes the blood shed by our liberators

Burgundy is the color of our national socces team “La Vinotinto. The color is the combination of all the colors in our flag

My culture and home country is Venezuela. As a Venezuelan we are very proud of our flag colors: yellow, blue and red. These same colors are found throughout our culture for many religious celebrations such as Corpus Christi. In this celebration people dress up in red with devil masks, which we call Diablos de Yare. In this celebration the devils surrender to God.

INDIA

Saffron represents courage and selflessness

White represents honesty, purity and peace

INDIA Green represents faith, feritlity and prosperity

Red represents sensuality and purity

Indian colors have both political and religious significance. They are used in both festivals and ceremonies. In the northern part of the country they use more subtle colors unlike the southern region where more vibrant colors are used. The deep orange hues which symbolize Marigold flowers are present in almost every celebration.

Indian brides wear red on their mostimportant day as a symbol of their pureness. The color black in India has connotations with lack of desirability, evil, negativity and inertia.

CONCLUSION Thanks to this assignment I was able to learn the meaning of the Diablos de Yare. Growing up I always found them terrifying since there were always either masks or statues in everyone’s houses.

I also had the chance to learn a little more about the Indian culture and colors. I have always found their culture very beautiful and knew parts of it such as the the Indian brides wearing red; however I did not know the meaning of the rest of the colors.

THEORY + COLOR

Reflection: occurs light strikes and

when object

Diffraction: occurs when light is partially obstructed by an object

COLOR THEORY Light and color together illuminate a space, guide focal point and attention and set the mood and expressions of the interior. Refraction: occurs when one or more light rays moves through a light medium to another, denser medium such as air to water or a prism, causing light to bend. Additive color: When the primary light colors red, green and blue are mixed white light is the result.

Subtractive color: the mix of blue, magenta and yellow results in black, violet, green and orange.

DESIGNERS + COLOR

The firms mantra is to create architecture that both unites beauty and form with strategy and intelligence.

ARCHITECTURE RESEARCH OFFICE Based in New York Cityled by Stephen Cassell, Adam Yarinsky and Kim Yao. ARO’s work focuses on strategic planning, architecture and urban design.

“Research and analysis drive design that unites the conceptual and the pragmatic within a strong, coherent vision” (archinect.com/architectureresearchoffice)

AOSHI KUDO QIORA STORE AND SPA NEW YORK, NY

To contrast the ethereal architecture is the very thought out placement of the Qiora products. Placed on top of tabletops and shelves of frosted acrylic, illuminated by using fiber optic uplights.

ARO was commisioned to design a day spa which would also serve as a flagship store. In order to overlap the spa’s need for privacy with the retail store ARO reference Qiora’s own holistic approach to skin health. If both the store and spa were outwardly luminous, the source of such calm must be a sense of inner calm.

Quiora’s centtral lighting fixtures are hidden along the perimeter walls, behind white flamed retardant fabric, in a staggered formation of vertical fluorescents.

Blue organza fabric veils were designed to set the visual and tactile boundaries required between retail, treatment areas and the spa cabins. Dyed milky white, aqua, and darkerblues, these layered veils dematerialize the solid surfaces of the round spa cabins.

The lighting is computer controlled, and white during morning and afternoons unlike the evening which becomes more intimate with bluer tones, making the sttore and spa a lantern on Madison Avenue.

The translucent colors are carefully set by overlapping layers of fabric and placement of illumination, drawing the eye continually into space, where a soothing, clean mood refreshes the visitors.

The diffusion of light through the organza acts a a cloud passing over the sun, casting the visitor’s skin in a rare luster. The space evokes the visitors the same refreshement and relaxation the Qiora products offer.

FILM + COLOR

HER BY SPIKE JONZE

HER,a film by Spike Jonze which follows the story of a Theodore Twombly, a man who’s job is to write personal letters for other people, and Samantha, an operating system with afemale voice. After his marriage ends, Theodore finds himself sad and lost and in search of someone else to keep him company. He purchases an OS which helps him find a new purpose in life and get over his failed marriage. The film shows us the diferent stages of this relationship through the use of multiple color palettes. Red is found in almost every scene with the combination of different pastel colors. Orange and green are also found in many scenes to convey the diferent feelings the characters are feeling at that moment.

ANALYSIS SCENES 1 We begin the lm with Theodore’s face and red and pink in the background. Throughout his days we can see his background full of beige, brown and greys which makes him stand out in his red shirt and jackets.

Red usually symbolizes love and compassion, however I believe in this film the director focused on this color to show his lack of, or maybe even need of Brown signifies melancholy, gloom and insecurity

Beige stands for gloom and neutrality Also aids to accentuate the color red

Grey symbolizes technology, confussion and depression

ANALYSIS SCENES 2 Theo’s office is bright and colorful. Red is always showing up combined with a pastel palette. From this we can understand Theo does not feel that same emptiness when he is at work writing letters.

The color red intensifies in the office environment

In these scenes brown shows comfort

Green symbolizes relaxation, tranquility and peace

Yellow is cheerful, happy and signifies hope

ANALYSIS SCENES 3 Yellow is also a very important color throughout the film. He wears yellow when he goes out on a blind date. When he tells his niece about Samantha, and when he finds out Samantha is also in love with 600 other people.

Yellow in this scenes shows uncertainty as well as hope

Beiges and grays symbolize melancholy and gloom

Blue symbolizes calm and comfort

Red once again a part of the film symbolizes passion

ANALYSIS SCENES 4 By the end of the movie the colors become a lot darker as the relationship between Theodore and Samantha ends. Theodore becomes very sad by the loss of his love, but by the end he realizes life keeps moving and accepts that Samantha is gone.

Blue is associated with calmness at the end of the movie

Grays emphasize Theo’s depression after Samantha leaves

Brown symbolizes gloom and melancholy

Salmon is also a color we see throughout the film. It relates to Theo’s past life with his wife, however it comes back at the end as he says bye to his life with Samantha

RETAIL + COLOR

CUYANA CONTRAST OF HUE is used when creating an interesting focal point. Through the use of contrasting colors we can guide the viewers eye towards a specific direction. In this case, the viewers eye is following the bags which contrast with the neutral colors of the furniture and walls.

CUYANA CONTRAST OF VALUE Is decribed a a light/dark contrast of black, gray or white values, to emphasize without the use of chromatic hues. In this store the contrast of value is created through the use of the merchandise. The pictures shows apparel being showcased following this contrast.

CUYANA CONTRAST OF DESIGN FEATURE The first thing that caught my eye prior to entering the store was this amazing art installation. When I asked about it, the ladies working told me they were supposed to be 164 fans, representing the 164 women who built it.

When the installation is placed in a row it resembles the braid from traditional Ecuadorian working women. The installation stood out from the rest of the furniture in the store due to its shape, texture and style. It was a beautiful piece!

CUYANA CONTRAST OF TEXTURE The fitting room curtains as well as the Art installation on the previous slide both had contrast of texture. The fitting room was the only place in the retail space where you could find this much fabric.

The location of the fitting room, in the far left corner of the store allowed for the rest of the items (merchandise) to stand out without distracting the viewers eye.

CUYANA CONTRAST OF FOCAL POINT From my perspective there were two different focal points, and these differed depending on where you were standing. From the exterior, the focal point of the store was the art installation located on the window. It called my attention and was the reason I decided to walk into the store.

Once you were already inside the next focal point was the curved counter located in the middle of the retail space. The location as well as the shape stood out.

HOSPITALITY + COLOR

east MIAMI POOL DECK The pool deck utilizes 3 main colors: orange gray and teal. The orange of the umbrella’s and lawn chairs contrasts with the concrete facade and floors. The color orange is associated with sunshine, joy and the tropics.

The angles of the pools direct guests towards a specific path. The circular openings on the concrete wall contrast with the straight lines of the pools, creating a sense of curiosity towards whatever is on the other side. The teal color of the pools as well as the green from the surrounding plants aide in the feeling of calmness and relaxation in the environment.

Different materials such as cconcrete, fabric and wood are found on the pool deck

east MIAMI SUGAR This rooftop bar and garden offers a more organic feel aginst the concrete structure that surrounds it. The wooden furtniture helps to accentuate this feeling.

The wooden floors serve as a path, while the stone finish on the ground separates the spaces.

The landscape / trees work as a visual barrier, blocking the concrete columns in the back. They also help with intense Miami sun, by providing shade during the day. At night time, the trees accentuate the privacy of the spaces.

The chosen furniture also plays a very important role in the ambiance of this space. The color palette uses greens from the plants, browns from the wood in the furniture and grays from the concrete. The roof top bar and garden offers the visitors of East Miami a great view of Brickell during both day and night times.

WORKPLACE + COLOR

Gray is found on the exposed beams and columns in the office

PANDORA ARCHITECT: ABA Studio YEAR: 2014 New York, NY

The massive blue wall found on the sie of the stairs catches your eye even prior to entering the space.

The white of the walls adds contrasts and helps to accentuate the blue wall. The brown of the wood floors creates a sense of warmth in contrast with the gray.

PANDORA ARCHITECT: ABA Studio YEAR: 2014 New York, NY

There is a second, more vibrant color palette the architects used for the enclosed crystal volumes used as meeting rooms and small telephone conference rooms.

The glass rooms are also covered with matrix-like dots which serve to define the surface of the volumes as well as provide different levels of visual privacy

The irregular shape of the crystal volumes invites multiple rooms and paths around them

As previously mentioned, wood is a very prominent material found throughout the office.

PANDORA ARCHITECT: ABA Studio YEAR: 2014 New York, NY

Used on the “core main staircase connecting the two floors as well as on the wall featuring abstract images of various musicians throughout music history. The carefully shaped wood adds texture to the space while creating a contrast against the exposed structure.

PANDORA ARCHITECT: ABA Studio YEAR: 2014 New York, NY

The presviously mentioned blue wall, made of round discs, hung like a curtain from floor to ceiling adds variety of texture while creating a sense of grandeur as visitors first enter the space.

The chosen furniture also adds variety and contrast to the design concept.

PANDORA ARCHITECT: ABA Studio YEAR: 2014 New York, NY

The Pandora office layout, color palettes as well as the materiality involved combined with the overall ambiance aids in the job performance of its workers.

It does a great job at inviting visitors to move around the spaces without feeling the usual intimidation of a regular “desk job office environment.

CONCLUSION Overall I have learned so much in this class from the use of color palettes for different environments as well as the use of a grid for a well done presentation.

Thank you so much for teaching this course!
