BUILD MORE BRIDGES
EDITOR’S NOTES t’s hard to believe, but we’ve already reached the midway point of summer. While that might be cause for disappointment for some, I’m more of a glass half full guy. The close of summer means fall is fast approaching, and despite having a true passion for snow, it’s safe to say fall is my favorite season. No bugs, no humidity, cool temperatures, and eventually stunning colors, fall is the best time to ride. Oh, and let’s not forget fall is also hunting season, another great reason to get your side-by-side or ATV out and ride…respectfully of course. You’re holding another incredible issue of Midwest Rider. Thanks again for the support, it continues to motivate us to make every issue better than the last. Inside you’ll find information on great gear, great insights, great vehicles, and of course great destinations. While Midwest Rider’s primary focus is ATV, side-by-side, and snowmobile riding opportunities, the truth is we love all types of riding and all types of vehicles, and you’ll see that by some of the stories inside. Whether it’s wheelers, side-by-sides, dirt bikes, adventure bikes, snow bikes, three wheelers, snowmobiles, tracked vehicles, or even amphibious, we love them all, and we believe there’s room for all users to get out and enjoy the trails and riding areas. For far too long, specific vehicle riding groups, clubs, associations, and even state agencies have wanted to sort these various vehicle types and differing riders into not so neat, segregated boxes. While I won’t disagree that unique riding areas, trails, and definitions may make for a somewhat better riding experience for the few, it’s time to expand our view and accept all riders. Afterall, we share the same passion. Be it pedal power, gasoline power, diesel power, hybrid power, or electric power, how you choose to motivate your vehicle may differ, but what motivates each of us remains the same…because we’re all riders. summer oil weight lessons from lubetech
ummer means hot weather and if you are following your grandfather’s footsteps you are probably reaching for heavier weight oil to protect your car, truck, ATV, UTV or anything else requiring a four-stroke lubricant. Lubricants are naturally thinner in hotter weather, so logic would tell us heavier weight oil is needed to provide the same engine protection you get from thinner oil in cooler weather. This logic holds true in some cases, but not for the reasons you would think.
Viscosity Since your Grandfather’s time, EPA fuel economy mandates have motivated automobile manufacturers and oil formulary scientists to adopt lower engine oil viscosity grades. Fuel economy is a major consideration in much of the engineering that goes into new cars. The new engine lubricants of today are designed to protect automobile engines over a wide temperature range, often with lower viscosity schemes. One of the major contributors to increased fuel economy is achieved through the lowering of viscous drag that heavier engine oils can create. Manufacturers have learned they can gain a fuel mileage advantage with thinner oil and protect their engines at the same time. Honda has capitalized on this by using 0W-20 oil and more recently have received API certification for its 0W-16 oil. Thinner oils have arguably played a bigger role in reducing EPA fuel mileage numbers than other technologies such as direct injection or CVT transmissions (comparing like models and gross vehicle weights). Automobile manufacturers go to great lengths to assure that the recommended lubricant is of the proper viscosity grade to optimize both fuel economy and engine protection. There is really no need to go outside of the recommended viscosity grade to protect your engine when it gets hot.
a lot more heat and shear forces, all of which require heavier weight oil to provide proper lubrication. Finally, ORVs aren’t built for mileage, they are built for work or play and they often see intermittent use putting even more responsibility on the oil to stand up to moisture, fuel dilution and other contaminants.
Oil Weights and Heat
While heat can be a real danger to internal combustion engines, modern automobiles have been engineered to run optimally on thinner oils no matter what the ambient temperature. Though they are designed and driven much differently than automobiles, ORVs can typically get by on an all-season oil as well but they are typically heavier in viscosity due to the factors listed Fuel Dilution above. Recently, manufacturers of ATVs have put more emphasis Turning to heavier weight oil is still important when it comes on special lubricants designed for to ATVs, UTVs and other off-road vehicles (ORVs). One of the extreme summer or hot weather main reasons is fuel dilution which thins the oil. Typical fuel use. If you work your ATV or other dilution in passenger cars is under one percent. Fuel dilution in ORV hard by using it to do such recreational vehicles can be as high as seven percent with three things as pull implements, race or to five percent being quite common. Using the manufacturer’s recommended lubricant assures that the engine will be protected use it in hot climates, using these in the face of high fuel dilution. ORVs and many motorcycles also special lubricants will assure you are doing all you can to protect run at higher RPMs (8,000 or more) and use a common sump your investment. for the engine and transmission which can introduce the oil to

THE HEART, HISTORY, AND SOUL OF HAY DAYS
Presented by
Hay Days from above in 2010 when the event was still held adjacent to Waldoch Sports in Columbus Township.
Celebrating 55 Years, the Sno Barons Passion for Powersports Still Burns Strong
B
ack in 1966, there weren’t a lot of snowmobile clubs and the sport looked very different than it does today. With the popularity of these unusual over-the-snow vehicles exploding, there were manufacturers of every shape and size looking to capitalize on the burgeoning popularity. Simultaneously, clubs began to form as well, including the Sno Barons. As with everything, only the strong would eventually survive this initial boom, of the more than 100 manufacturers that dotted the snow belt, only four remain today. The same could be said of the snowmobile clubs. Many have come and gone over the past half century, and the Sno Barons not only survived, but thrived. To be successful, be it a business, an organization, or a club you need a common goal…a purpose. For the Sno Barons that purpose is unquestionably Hay Days. Stemming from an idea that took root on a steamy summer night in 1966 over drinks at the Crooked Lake Tavern, the Sno Barons club was formed, and from it Hay Days. The list of suggested names for the newly formed club was endless. The first approved name was the Crooked Lake Sno Barons. The name later was changed to Anoka Sno Barons, then the Anoka County Sno Barons, and eventually to simply the Sno Barons. The roots of the club are still primarily in Anoka County, but today’s members are from all over the metro area, and even beyond. The first race took place in November 1967 on the site of what’s now the Majestic Oaks Golf Club, in Ham Lake, Minnesota. Early events – then known as the “Hay Day” race – took place in a single afternoon in October or November and drew racers from the Minneapolis and St. Paul area. Because

Hay Days 2022
snow is far from certain during those months, organizers built the race surface out of alfalfa hay, hence the name “Hay Day.” As word spread about an interesting snowmobile race held on a bed of hay, its popularity grew. Events were held on a shoestring budget and the Sno Barons coordinated everything – from building the track to signing up racers to managing concessions. Long-time members recall spending endless hours preparing hundreds of pounds of sloppy joes, brats, polish sausages and hot dogs to feed hungry spectators, racers, and club members throughout the day. The event led a nomadic existence, with development forcing it to move several times until the club in 2010 purchased its
own land in Sunrise Township in Chisago County, about seven miles east of North Branch, which is now the permanent home for Hay Days. Hay Days really kicked into high gear in 1976 when the Southern Wisconsin Drag Racing Association (SWDRA) added the event to its racing circuit. Soon, racers from across the snowbelt and eventually around the world were flocking to Hay Days, and race day permanently moved to the weekend following Labor Day. In 1980 the swap meet was added, and it quickly became one of the largest buying-and-selling events of its kind anywhere. Hay Days racers come from all over the U.S. and Canada, and so do the swappers – pulling trailers overflowing with snowmobile, off-road, collectibles and a vast array of unearthed trinkets and treasures. With the growth of both the racing and the swap meet, other parts of Hay Days grew as well. Today, Hay Days represents one of the biggest, if not the biggest, powersports shows in the world. Virtually every major manufacturer and aftermarket company in both the snowmobile and off-road vehicle market are in attendance. You won’t find club members preparing thousands of hot dogs any longer, instead scores of food vendors and food trucks encompass the grounds and the Sno Barons have built four beer gardens, each close to the events and activities where the biggest crowds gather. It’s safe to say you won’t go thirsty. Today, Hay Days marks the beginning of the snowmobiling season, this “Official Start of Winter” puts the eyes of the entire global snowmobile population on this two-day event. For this reason, Hay Days has become the focal point for all the major players. Many manufacturers unveil their newest models at the event – often in grand style. There’s no question, Hay Days is a labor of love for the Sno Barons. The modern-day Hay Days is a major event, and it

generates significant revenue…revenue that the Sno Barons use to continue to make both the Hay Days experience and the snowmobiling experience across the snowbelt better. It starts with the Hay Days grounds. Beyond the day-to-day costs of maintaining the facility, the Sno Barons are continually making investments to improve the infrastructure. From permanent roads, fencing, and world-class racing tracks to new structures and event experiences like this year’s Hay Days App for your smart phone — the Hay Days experience continually gets better. Beyond the venue, the Sno Barons developed a grant program to provide financial assistance to other snowmobile and offroad clubs. From bridge construction and warming houses to
trail re-routes, the Sno Barons have been helping other clubs keep the sport of snowmobiling alive and vibrant. Additional process fund scholarships for area schools and charitable causes including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Sheriffs’ Boys Ranch, local food shelves, along with police, fire, and community groups. From humble beginnings to world’s largest…the passion and soul of the Sno Barons has remained the same. If you’d like to learn more about the Sno Barons Snowmobile Club and how you can become a member, visit their website at www. snobarons.com The club is always seeking new members who are active enthusiasts and want to make a difference in the sport.
Want to be part of the action? The Sno Barons are always looking for active new members who like to get their hands dirty and want to be part of the world’s biggest snowmobile event. Visit their website at snobarons.com to find out how. 8

SHOCKING RIDES
feature
The Polaris Ranger XP Kinetic sold out within the first day, and is by all accounts, leading the electric off-road movement.
Story: Pat Bourgeois The forward momentum of electric vehicles is on. After being scoffed at for several years, Tesla has become a major player in the automotive industry, and the benchmark by which all other electric cars are measured. Regardless of where you stand in the electric vehicle discussion, and the opinions are many, there’s little doubt electric vehicles in some capacity, will be part of our transportation future. he same can be said for the future of powersports. Already, we’ve seen the major manufacturers wade into the electric fray. Polaris has come to market with an all-electric Ranger called the XP Kinetic, and according to reports, saw its initial production run sell-out within the first day. The Minnesota company’s primary rival, BRP in Quebec, also announced they too would be electrifying their line-up, with an electric vehicle offering in each of their primary categories including Can-Am side-by-sides by model year 2026. Back in 2019, BRP purchased the electric motorcycle manufacturer Alta to get a jump-start on the technology necessary to make the EV transition. Alta was considered by many within the two-wheel industry to have leading technology in the category. Of course, there are others who have made these same proclamations and have since fallen to the wayside. Nikola Motors was in the news plenty a few years ago after the company blindsided investors who eventually learned its then hero product was mostly smoke and mirrors after a damning video of its “game changing” truck was proven to be a fake. There was also a powersports division of Nikola that had big aspirations to build electric ATVs and side-by-sides. However, 26 Midwest Rider 2022
after much hype, those plans came to a screeching halt when the Nikola powersports division was shuttered back in February of 2021. However, there are plenty of new companies to fill the void and the hype left behind by Nikola. It seems every few months, we hear of rumblings of yet another start-up manufacturer with plans of an electric powersports vehicle. We look at a few of those within this article. Thus, if an electric off-road vehicle is destined to be part of our riding future, we thought it would be prudent to give more insight and dispel some myths about electric vehicles. As a Tesla owning household for the past five years, I personally had to overcome a steep learning curve when it comes to owning and understanding electric vehicles. At my core I remain a gas and oil lover, but I’ve also come to appreciate and dare I say love electric vehicles. I know they’re not for everyone, nor will they currently replace our beloved internal combustion engines any time soon. But in the right application and the right mindset, they have a place in our lives now and in the future. So, with that, here are ten tings you need to know about electric vehicles.
10 THINGS POWER The power and instant torque of an electric vehicle is amazing. Unlike an internal combustion engine that has “build” power and has a torque curve, an electric vehicle can hit instantly, and can retain that peak power or peak torque indefinitely, or at least until the battery runs out. I’ve made grown men giggle and God-fearing folks swear when stomping the accelerator of our Tesla. That same kind of acceleration can be expected from electric performance powersports vehicles.
KNOW YOUR EV CHARGING STATIONS
CHARGE TIME You’ll see plenty of arguments against electric vehicles saying they take “forever” to charge. What they often leave out is how the vehicle is being charged. Charging speed or range is all about charging power. In the EV world, charge is referred as miles of charge per hour. In other words, if you are charging at 30 miles per hour, you are adding 30 miles of range to your battery for each hour of charge. It’s true if you attempt to charge using a lowly 15amp, 110volt typical household circuit it could take you days to fully charge a vehicle. Tesla Supercharging stations for example, vary in capabilities, with both 150amp and 250amp options. The more amps you have the faster you can recharge, but dealing with the heat while charging is one of the limitations that engineers are looking to mitigate with future technology.
TEMPERATURE Yes, colder temperatures will reduce the overall range of your vehicle. Nearly all electric vehicle specs will give you best case scenario numbers. From experience, I’ve seen anywhere from 20 to 35 percent reduction in range based upon temperature. In most cars, a heating system is built into the battery bank to heat the battery in cold weather situations. This obviously takes power as well, not to mention space. Such a system to our knowledge, is not being employed in current electric powersports vehicles.
REGENERATIVE BRAKING Regenerative braking is the ability of a vehicle to produce its own energy and thus charge the battery. When slowing, the electric motor(s) becomes a generator. Such a system helps the overall range of vehicle, but it’s simply not enough to overcome the net draw on the system. A hidden benefit of regenerative braking is how it dramatically prolongs the life of your brakes. If the system is adjustable, you can dial up the regenerative braking capabilities to maximum and, once you get used to it, you’ll barely touch the brakes as the system captures maximum energy and, in the process, slows the vehicle considerably.
July/Aug 2022 27
10 THINGS RANGE We already touched on this briefly, but the range you see listed in the specs is best case scenario — perfect conditions, perfect temperatures, and smooth and steady speeds. Once you start mashing the pedal with a hammer down approach, your range will suffer.
STRANDED I’ve seen plenty of memes on social media poking fun at EV owners running out of juice in the worst situations. Obviously, this can happen, but you should also know most electric vehicles have several failsafe operations in place to help you avoid this. From countless warnings, to reduced power and speed modes, to extended “hidden” reserves, they’re all there to keep you from being stranded. More importantly, owning and driving an electric vehicle requires planning and forethought when it comes to routes and destinations.
DEGREDATION Batteries have a lifespan and how you treat them will impact that lifespan. Contrary to the myths you read on social media about having to replace the battery of your electric car or sideby-side in a few short years, most modern EV vehicles have a battery life that will likely far outlive other parts of the vehicle, especially if you take care of it. Charging the battery to only the level you need (versus fully charging it every time), and draining the battery to near empty occasionally will extend the life of the battery.
HOME CHARGING As pointed out earlier, charging with a standard 110 outlet is not going to cut it. You need more power and one of the best things you can do as an electric vehicle owner is to install a home charging system. Most utilize a 50amp circuit and can charge at a rate of 40 to 50 miles per hour.
28 Midwest Rider 2022
CHEAPER THAN GAS With gas prices at record highs and rising electric rates, this argument is a moving target at best. But, when you factor in the additional maintenance required of an internal combustion vehicle, and if you look at off-peak charging programs, an EV vehicle can be cheaper to operate than a gas one. While the off-road environment will be much more abusive than an on-road one, our Tesla has nearly 60,000 miles logged and has only needed one set of tires and windshield washer fluid.
10 THINGS NOT FOR EVERYONE By no means do we think electric vehicles are for everyone. For any kind of long-distance trail ride we’re grabbing the gasser keys every time. But if you’re riding style or work requirements keep you close to home with the ability to apply a fresh charge every night, an electric side-by-side could be in your future. VOLCON STAG For the past few years, Texas based start-up Volcon ePowersports has been slowly building momentum in the offroad space. It started on two wheels with the Grunt, followed by the smaller statured Runt. Resembling the original 1985 Yamaha Big Wheel 200 (BW200), these big tire e-bikes are simplistic, urban focused, and tout a top speed of 40mph with a projected range up to 75 miles (Grunt). However, Volcon now appears to be a more serious player in the off-road space with their recently announced Stag full-electric side-by-side. Like many big announcements from start-ups these days, the Stag has been launched with lots of bold proclamations, but few, if any actual production units to back it up. Still, on paper and in the photos, the Stag appears to have the potential to deliver some serious fun. With output up to 140-horsepower, a range up to 100-miles, and plenty of integrated technology including on-board cameras, driving modes, route planning, and smart phone connectivity, the four seat Stag looks every bit the part of a modern performance side-by-side. Starting at just under $40,000 (you can reserve one for a $100), the Stag is projecting deliveries to start during the summer of 2023, and we’ll be waiting for our test ride opportunity with charging plug in hand. volcon.com RINDEV UNITY There’s no shortage of bold bravado coming from the electric powersports start up Rindel and their recently announced Unity side-byside. With a claimed whopping 507-horspower, a range up to 350-miles (for an extra $10K, the base model has a suggested price of $29,999) and a top speed of more than 70mph, it all sounds too good to be true. With plans to assemble the Unity somewhere in Colorado using a high percentage of American sourced parts, the Rindel company is also saying all the right things. Of course, we won’t know just what the Unity is truly capable of until a production model hits the dirt. For now, we’ll have to rely on some sweet computer-generated images, and a chance to reserve one for a fully refundable $100. rindev.com AMERICAN LANDMASTER EV 4X4 If you haven’t heard of American Landmaster, it’s likely because the company has been quietly working under the boisterous noise of the off-road landscape just on the outskirts of Fort Wayne, Indiana. For the past several years, the utility focused side-by-side builder has been pumping out a nice selection of UTVs ranging from the simple and affordable L3 at just over $7K up to the LX7 with top speed of 34mph and a price tag of just over $14K. But it’s the new for 2022 EV 4x4 that got our attention during a recent visit. Landmaster already has a pair of rear-wheel drive only electric side-by-sides in their lineup, but this is their first electric 4x4 offering. Like all Landmaster units, the new EV is work and adventure utility focused and will deliver a top speed of 30mph and a range up to 65 miles. The EV 4x4 touts a price tag of $17,499, and you can find a dealer near you by visiting their website. americanlandmaster.com July/Aug 2022 29

reg Mosher was an integral part of the Prospectors ATV Club based out of Ely, Minnesota which also represents the Tower, Babbitt and Embarrass areas. Greg was a great friend to many, and sadly passed away unexpectedly this past Christmas Eve. The Prospectors recently held the Inaugural Greg Mosher Memorial Ride in June. Over 100 people and 53 machines had perfect weather while traversing a 70 mile route and raising over $1,000 in donations. The Babbitt ATV Club cooked everyone a great lunch for all participants who then stopped near Putnam Lake where an overlook will be built dedicated to Greg as a memorial.

RECREATE THE GREG MOSHER MEMORIAL RIDE If you are looking for an area to explore, this Northeast portion of Minnesota is incredibly beautiful to take in via the seat of an ATV or UTV. The Greg Mosher Memorial Ride left from Ely’s Whiteside Park and headed down the Taconite Trail to the Beaver River bridge to Trail #5 and #3 onto Babbitt. From Babbitt, the ride went back across the Soular swamp boardwalk onto Trail #3 and then onto Trail #4 where the Putman Lake Greg Mosher outlook is planned. All of Trail #4 was taken back to the Taconite Trail and returned to the starting point in Ely. (70 Miles) The Prospectors Trail Alliance considers the availability of destination travel routes throughout the northland, a key consideration in providing public access through ATV use to many desired locations. Connecting communities with such features as Soudan Underground Mine State Park, Lake Vermilion State Park, Bear Head Lake State Park and a variety of other features within the Superior National Forest is a key component to enabling the use and access of these wonderful attributes that Minnesota has to offer.

DRUMMOND ISLAND – MICHIGAN’S LARGEST CLOSED-LOOP TRAIL VISITDRUMMONDISLAND.COM
he off road vehicle (ORV) trails on Drummond Island are home to some of the most scenic and rugged in Michigan. Drummond’s DNR-sponsored trail system is the largest closed-loop ORV system in the state. With over 60 miles of ATV trails and 40 miles of ORV routes, there’s a lot to explore. Drummond Island’s ORV system contains a wide variety of terrain. From picturesque hardwood forests, to expansive, wide open meadows, spiced up with occasional short rock climbs. Discover island routes running along stone ridges carved out by Lake Huron and the last Ice Age. Ride loops taking you near the shore of Lake Huron for some exceptional vistas, as well as distant views of the Canadian shore. If challenging trails set deep into the woods can be considered a treasure, then Drummond Island has the mother lode. Drummond’s trails lend themselves to long extended trail rides where you’ll want to take water, food, first aid, and tools, in addition to extra clothing. With the rugged nature of Drummond’s ATV trails, 4x4 utility ATVs are preferred. Even though utility style quads and 4x4s lend themselves more to the kind of ride Drummond has to offer, side-by-sides have ample trails to explore on the ORV routes. 38 Midwest Rider 2022
