What did you catch this summer? After a fun filled summer spent travelling, many students find they came home with some uninvited guests. Each year the Tropical Medical Bureau sees students returning with all sorts of nasty infections and unfortunately some very serious illnesses. Here are a couple of things to be mindful of and if you see symptoms don’t delay in seeking medical attention. Did you have unprotected sex? If so, it’s probably worth getting some STI checks done just in case. Not all STI’s present with symptoms either so only test results will confirm. Get sunburnt? The Irish are not known for their bronzed tans, more like varying shades of red. If you got sunburnt badly or have any existing moles – pay close attention to them and go to a doctor if you notice a change in their shape or colour. Walk barefoot along the sandy beaches? Of course you did, bet you didn’t know there’s little things called Larva Migrans which are little worms that can get into your skin and literally crawl around. Sometimes you can literally see the tracks the worm is making under the skin. If this sounds like something you picked up then give us a call, it’s absolutely treatable. Tubing in Laos? Chances are probably high that you did, the bad news is that water is not the freshest water around and we have seen a number of people come home with Leptospirosis. This can present with a variety of symptoms such as headache, fever and chills. If you were tubing in Laos & have any of these symptoms then it might be worth following up with the TMB and getting checked out. Spent too much time in the bathroom? Upset stomach is an all too common side effect of holidays abroad. Hopefully most pass with in a couple of days but if the symptoms are not going away then there is a possibility there may be a parasite lurking. TMB will be able to help so give us a call to meet with our specialist.
