Vintage Vint Vintage Vintage V

Vintage Vintage Vintage. Everyone got vintage fever. With new stores popping up online and all over the country this vintage craze is on the rise and with that there comes the need for uniqueness and individual style. We don’t just want to wear whats in the highstreet shops anymore, instead we want to mix and match putting a revolutionary twist into our wardrobes. Shopping vintages allows you to stand out from the crowd giving that extra edge to your outfit and allowing you to get the most hypes on lookbook. We spoke to Blainaid Hennessy, recognised stylist and owner of the vintage store ‘ShutterBug’ in Kilkenny, to get the low down on the vintage experience. So, Blanaid, how long has Shutterbug been open for? We opened as a photography studio in May 2010 and added the vintage store at the front in December 2010. What inspired you to open a vintage clothes shop ? It was always a part of our plan to open a store of some kind – particularly as it makes it much easier to style shoots in the studio! I love the individuality of vintage, I love that it makes you think and work that bit harder to create a full outfit. It’s difficulty can be a source of creativity. What do you think is the big attraction of vintage clothes? What makes them so special? I think as our population grows, certain people are subconsciously looking for a way to mark themselves as individuals, to be known for a particular look e.g : “Oh she’s the girl who wears 40’s clothes/crazy stuff” etc. Vintage is the antithesis of boring – it’s fun, it’s enjoying fashion on a creative level, it’s having a considered opinion on your own personal style and implementing it on a daily basis. Have you any tips for people when thrift shopping? Put a lot of time in and try everything on. Honestly, things that look shapeless, boring or pretty horrendous on a hanger can be amazing on… particularly if you get friendly with belts and a pair of scissors! A little simple alteration can make a slightly misshapen piece look like it was made especially for you. Also become friendly with the staff – they could keep you in mind when their stock arrives.

Do you get most of your sales over your Facebook page or is it from customers walking off the street? I would say it’s 50/50 – though it varies. Facebook can be incredible one week, and the store dead, and then it flips. Facebook is a fantastic medium though – it really made our business much more accessible. I see you use unsigned, alternative styled models, do you fell this gives you an extra edge to your clothes? Absolutely – I don’t choose my models for any other reason except that they are naturally at ease in the clothes we have in stock. They can be any height or shape so long as they genuinely love the looks they’re wearing. Many of them will even assist in the styling on the day – and I love that contribution! We have a lovely team now and I’m grateful to them all for making the store look good! How did you find your models? Our photographer Ciuin Tracey found Lauren Bejaoui and her friends Donal Talbot and Davie Jordan- Andrews – they are like a dream team! Mary Kate Lanigan and Brid Leahy worked in the store, Alice Norwood was a customer and Nico Orani is one of my closest friends. So yes, it’s usually through some kind of connection or friend. I feel very lucky to have them all – they really are an incredible bunch of people.

Shutterbug has a stall in Dublin every weekend at the Loft Market, Powerscourt and you can order clothes on their facebook page or their website; www.shutterbug.ie. They are also You stock Silver Factory T-shirts, are you always on the having customer evenings in their Kilkenny lookout for new, young talent? Store November 19th and December 10th, with Absolutely – but then again I have a very definite style new stock, discount prices, food and drink, in mind when I’m looking, so I guess I’m pretty selective! Cameron from the Silver Factory complements our store and definitely worth checking out. style perfectly.

What did you catch this summer? After a fun filled summer spent travelling, many students find they came home with some uninvited guests. Each year the Tropical Medical Bureau sees students returning with all sorts of nasty infections and unfortunately some very serious illnesses. Here are a couple of things to be mindful of and if you see symptoms don’t delay in seeking medical attention. Did you have unprotected sex? If so, it’s probably worth getting some STI checks done just in case. Not all STI’s present with symptoms either so only test results will confirm. Get sunburnt? The Irish are not known for their bronzed tans, more like varying shades of red. If you got sunburnt badly or have any existing moles – pay close attention to them and go to a doctor if you notice a change in their shape or colour. Walk barefoot along the sandy beaches? Of course you did, bet you didn’t know there’s little things called Larva Migrans which are little worms that can get into your skin and literally crawl around. Sometimes you can literally see the tracks the worm is making under the skin. If this sounds like something you picked up then give us a call, it’s absolutely treatable. Tubing in Laos? Chances are probably high that you did, the bad news is that water is not the freshest water around and we have seen a number of people come home with Leptospirosis. This can present with a variety of symptoms such as headache, fever and chills. If you were tubing in Laos & have any of these symptoms then it might be worth following up with the TMB and getting checked out. Spent too much time in the bathroom? Upset stomach is an all too common side effect of holidays abroad. Hopefully most pass with in a couple of days but if the symptoms are not going away then there is a possibility there may be a parasite lurking. TMB will be able to help so give us a call to meet with our specialist.
