Your Body i Would you like to get fitter or stronger or maybe even loose a few pounds or inches to look and feel your best for the best years of your life (The student years) My name is Dan Fagan, I am an exercise scientist and strength & conditioning specialist and I was once a broke student scrimping for as many free gym passes as possible. However even as a fledging young sport scientist in training did I realise I could get fit without the gym and all its fancy plasma TV’s and sauna’s etc. It took me many years to develop the skills and knowledge to exercise just using my own body and I can safely say it is just as good if not better than using machines. Recently I have opened my own gym and don’t get me wrong I am not saying nobody needs gyms (They just need the right kind of gyms). This article is about how you can use your body effectively so you can be your own gym. Bodyweight cardio and Calisthenics (Exercises without any equipment) are fast becoming one of the most popular fitness trends no surprise as they are proven to be some of the best

ways to train and produce the great results in the shortest possible time (always a bonus for students hectic time schedule). The added bonus of this “Your body is your gym” way of training is that you can do it anywhere even in those tiny student accommodations some of you have been blessed with throughout the academic year. I know you students really want to achieve your academic goals but I also know you like to have fun and enjoy yourself. Let’s face it who wants to give up the party life for gruelling exercise routines and extreme dieting. Well that’s not what I propose quite the opposite in fact. I recommend just 30 minutes of this workout 3 times a week to get serious results. Taking good care of your body now will help boost your energy levels, help you stay academically in tune, help you move better on the dance floor on those student nights out and most importantly you may even have fun exercising especially with some of your college buddies.

Transform your Body courtesy of Travelcard! SAVE €125 & get FREE expert advice from Laura our expert Nutritionist and Dan our Exercise Scientist. If you are interested, see our criteria: Two dedicated students volunteers to dedicate 6 weeks of their hectic student lifestyles to train hard and eat right to get the maximum results and to feel great. News Delhi hospitals try to cope with outbreak of Dengue Fever It’s an annual plague in India and a hidden epidemic, say experts. Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease with no known cure or vaccination that strikes fear into the citizens of New Delhi when it arrives with the monsoon rains -- just as the scorching heat of the summer is subsiding. Hospital wards are overwhelmed and tales abound of deaths and cases while New Delhi public authorities insist that only 3,500 have fallen sick so far this year -- with only five fatalities. In a sign that this year’s outbreak could be as bad as record-breaking 2010, the city’s largest public hospital, Hindu Rao, announced earlier this month that it had suspended all routine surgeries to make room for more dengue patients. The Delhi government has blamed prolonged monsoons for the hike in infections, but says it has added beds at hospitals and increased

resources for spraying insecticides to tackle the mosquito menace. The virus -- first detected in the 1950s in the Philippines and Thailand -- affects two million people across the globe annually, with the number of cases up 30 times in the last 50 years, according to the World Health Organisation. Transmitted to humans by the female Aedes aegypti mosquito, it causes high fever, headaches, itching and joint pains that last about a week. There are four strains, one of which can cause fatal internal bleeding. While dengue is painful and debilitating, death is usually rare but patients are vulnerable to other fatal viral infections during or shortly after the time of illness. There is still no specific treatment, but last year French healthcare giant Sanofi Pasteur said it would begin tests for a dengue vaccine in India before making it available internationally by 2015.

Katie Cantwell KC Peaches Katie Cantwell founded the café in 2006 after she discovered a notable absence of healthy, affordable fast food in Dublin. Working long days and late nights in corporate consulting, she found herself hard-pressed to eat as she did in her native Seattle with a focus on all-natural, preservative-free fare. With a passion for food cultivated in her native Seattle and nurtured in France, she yearned to bring the fresh, flavourful food she prepared for herself when time allowed to the masses—and she’s done just that. Under Katie’s direction, KC Peaches mixes the belief of seasonal, local, and sustainable product popular in the United States’ Pacific Northwest with the quality and creativity of local Irish Artisan producers. Had you always wanted to work in the food industry? Yes, I have always wanted to be involved with the food industry. I did not believe initially that it would happen at this point in my life, but I feel very lucky to work in an industry I truly enjoy. You opened up your business during the recession, why do you think your business survived and so many others failed? Our business model is based on providing a quality product at an affordable price, which is valued during a recessionary period. We offer most of our dishes via self-service, which allows us to keep costs lower.

Did you encounter any obstacles when you first started out in the industry? We encountered numerous obstacles. However, we looked at them more as challenges than road-blocks. What’s your typical daily routine? I am very lucky in that my day-to-day routine varies greatly. I never get bored and I love what I do. In 2011 you expanded and opened a business on Nassau Street, some may say you are the ‘unofficial trinity café’. Why do you think Students have taken so well to your food and style? I believe there are a number of reasons why KCP has attracted students: I think students want

!

KC Peaches, Dame St are offering an exclusive treat for all Student Travelcard members for all of November. Get a free Tea or Americano with you lunch when you show your Student Travelcard. Perfect for these chilly afternoons! Go on, treat youself! true brain food rather than processed chemicalladen products. Students are a very discerning group of people, they are well-educated and are well aware of the contents of dishes/ products they consume. We try to provide options at all price levels to ensure students can afford everything from a homemade chocolate cookie to a double decker KCP club. Also, we currently have and will always have a generous student discount. What advice would you give young students wanting to get into the food industry? Or indeed open their own business? I would recommend that they get a good amount of experience first at all levels of the industry – from kitchen work to customer service to management. It is an all-consuming industry. If you are not in love with food and

the environment, work in restaurants, cafes, etc will become very tiresome. In terms of starting a business outside of the food industry, I would recommend to keep a very close eye on costs. Have a basic level of accounting. Be relaxed – no problem is too big to manage – stress will get you nowhere. Have you any new plans / developments? We are really excited to open our 4th location on St. Stephen’s Green in December. Do you think you’ll ever move back to the states? I do not have any immediate plans to relocate to the US. However, I do believe that at some point, I will move back to the states. I have recently been naturalised and hope to always have a presence in Ireland.

Bring it on

Travel Tips It might be chilly and wet outside right now, but it’s time to start to think about how you want to spend your summer… the earlier you start planning the more opportunities and bargains that will be available to you. You may choose to spend your summer working abroad but don’t forget to look around and enjoy the experience of living in another country. You’ll be living on a budget but it’s important to know which corners to cut and where to spend, so we’ve pulled together some tips to tell you how to make those hard earned dollars take you even further. Top Travel Tips • Don’t forget to bring some cash for immediate expenses e.g. taxis, public transport, tips, food. Make sure to order your foreign currency notes at least 10 days in advance from your local AIB branch.

• When paying for goods and services keep your card in view. • Make sure that you have some travel insurance in place. If your trip is interrupted or your luggage is lost, you’ll be glad you bought it.

• Bring a range of payment methods (credit card, debit card and cash) and don’t keep them all in one place! Order and pack your AIB Card Reader in case you need to make new international transfers or set up standing orders while you’re away.

• Make a copy of your Travel Itinerary; leave a copy with a family member or someone who you will be in constant contact with.

• Check the expiry dates on your cards and your passport!

• Make sure you have access to sufficient money to cover expenses and access to emergency funds.

• Always shield your PIN when you are using an ATM or Point of Sale terminal.

• Check if you need a visa for the country you are visiting.

Before You Go • Take advice from student bloggers; you aren’t the first student to travel so why not learn from others’ mistakes? Search online for some great examples of how to travel on a budget but not miss out. • Take copies of your passport, travel documents, insurance policies and any reservations to before you leave, so you have your important information to hand if you need it. • Earplugs can be the cheapest & best item in your bag in a noisy city or hostel. • Be flexible in your travel plans and plan ahead as much as possible – you can save money and stress that way. Remember that Fridays and Sundays are generally very expensive days to travel and try to find out if there are any public holidays during your stay as these can also push prices up in cities. Be willing to get up suuuuper early for cheaper flights. • If you are a registered AIB Phone & Internet Banking customer, you can download the AIB Mobile Banking app to your smartphone before you go – as well as allowing you to transfer funds and check your balance, it has a Foreign Exchange Calculator and any AIB phone numbers you may need while you’re away. Terms and conditions apply, and data charges may apply. See www.aib.ie/ mobilebanking for more information.

Safety While You’re There • Keep your wallet in a zippered pocket, preferably inside your jacket. If you need to exchange money in a foreign country, only use authorized vendors like banks. • Don’t be flashy. Wear an old, inexpensive watch and leave the bling at home. You don’t want to be a walking target for thieves. If you bring a fancy digital camera or an MP3 player, don’t flaunt them. • When you check in at your hotel or hostel, grab a card from the counter with the hotel/ hostel’s name, address and phone number on it. Keep this or take a photo with your phone so that you have the contact details with you at all times. • Don’t carry much cash on you; you’ll be in bad shape if you get mugged. Protect yourself by paying with a credit card if possible. Travelling the world as a college student is important for so many reasons. It’s very important to travel and learn about the world outside of your own; however, you don’t need to break your bank account in order to make that happen. Why not use your summers off to travel the world, cross off a few bucket-listers, take some pictures and make stories from wild adventures? So get out there and make it happen! Just go. Every penny spent today can be earned tomorrow. College years are for living!
