Leap your way to lower fares! If you are a regular student leapcard user, you might be glad to hear that a cap has been put on the amount you can spend while using your Leap card on one day or week. The National transport Authority has introduced a new capping service, whereby you cannot spend over a certain amount during a daily or weekly time period on Dublin Bus, Dart/Commuter Rail and Luas. The Leap Card system caps your use of Travel Credit so that once you hit the Cap value you can continue as normal but at no cost, no matter whether you have been using Dublin Bus, Luas, Dart or Commuter Rail.

Padraic Hayden

Frite Haus Padraic Hayden, owner of Camden Kitchen and the newly opened Frite Haus tells us about work ethic, his inspiration for his new restaurant and gives advice about getting into the industry. Had you always wanted to work in the food industry? I've always been interested in food, flavours & textures always resonated with me and cooking came easy and made sense. The processes and techniques fascinate me and I have always felt most at home in a professional kitchen. I've been a chef for 20 years working in Gastronomic restaurants and 5 star hotels- it has been my life and an enjoyable and rewarding profession.

What inspired you to open up to Frite Haus? I enjoy the buzz of a busy service and team work. I have been a head chef for the last 10 years- in One Pico, Dylan and Camden Kitchen, this new project is more casual and fun- it harks back to living in Brussels when I was younger, where Frites are taken very seriously.

You opened up Camden Kitchen during the recession, why do you think you survived and so many others failed? Camden kitchen has survived through the recession on the back of hard work from the team and no shortage effort. We try to develop and evolve- to keep ideas fresh but in every restaurant luck plays a large part.

FRITE HAUS IS OFFERING ALL STUDENTS WHO SHOW THEIR LEAP FRONG CARD AUTHENTIC TRIPLE COOKED BELGIAN FRIES,SAUSAGE OF THE DAY AND A CHOICE OF SOFT DRINK FOR JUST â‚Ź9 Is there anything that you would like to tell young people who want to get into the industry? My advice to students considering a future in the catering industry is to be prepared to keep your head down and learn your craft. If it is a long process and there is no shortcut to becoming a chef- it's about putting a graft in first and foremost.

6 Week Weight Follow Jenny’s weight loss routine and get into shape at home! I hope some of you students gave my 30 minute workout a go over the past few weeks and I hope there were no complaints from the neighbours for noise disturbances. If you gave it a go just let us know what you thought. In last months issue we attempted to recruit a highly motivated individual to take our 60 day challenge. Thank you very much for all the applicants we had a huge response. We are delighted to announce we have found our participant - Jenny. Jenny has turned a new page in her life and has already started on a new eating regime. She has approached us with massive enthusiasm to loose weight and keep it off. In partnership with Laura from Act of Nutrition we have designed a lifestyle transformation program for Jenny that will encourage her to continue to loose weight, tone up and feel great. So before we got started we asked Jenny to take part in a full body assessment at The Fitness Bay – Baldoyle. I examined her weight, BMI, Waist/Hip Ratio and Body Fat %. Following her body assessment she was taken through a functional screening test and program design.

Below is Jenny’s before stats… Weight

As part of our body assessment we also took some before pictures to help us to see any changes in body shape as a result of the challenge. Before pictures are often a very good motivator for those who want to lose weight. We will put up more pictures as she progresses.

If you would like to follow Jenny’s program ask a fitness professional for help with correct exercise technique or email dan@fitnessbay.ie for help. I would always encourage you to check your BMI and Body Fat % regularly to ensure you are not in a high risk category. Feel free to speak to us about any of the content of this article. We would like to wish Jenny all the best and of course thank her for taking part in the challenge. We know she will do great especially with the help of Laura from Act of Nutrition. Go Jenny! Ever Wonder Which is the Best One to Buy? Firstly for those of you who don’t know, leap cards can save you hundreds per year. Not only are leapcards cheaper than paying with cash, you can also use your Student Travelcard to avail of cheaper weekly and monthly tickets. From December onwards you can no longer buy paper Student monthly/weekly tickets from Dublin Bus, Dart/Commuter Rail or Luas. If you still want to avail of these tickets, students must upload them onto their Student Travelcards.

Leap into the New Year and and save money! Just in case you still weren’t entirely convinced we got our Student Travelcard journalist to compare her monthly transport expenses between paying cash and using her Student Travelcard. The first part of her daily commute to work is a train ride on the Dart. Paying with cash costs €2.80. The second leg of the journey involved a bus ride from the city centre to our offices in Blanchardstown which also amounted to €2.80. Her total weekly spend was €56. The next week our journalists used her Student Travelcard. The Travelcard saved her .50c on the dart each journey and 35c on the bus. Overall she saved €8.50 using pay-as-you-go on her leap card! However, since our reporter is very savvy, she bought a Student Monthly Short Hop Bus and Rail ticket with her Student Travelcard, only costing €119 per month – equalling €29.75 per week. Saving an astonishing €1,042 per year compared with paying Adult leapcard pay-as-you-go fares and saving €408 compared with paying the Adult Monthly Short Hop Bus and Rail Leapcard fare. The Student Monthly Short Hop Bus and Rail ticket is only available on your Student Travelcard. Normal adult leap fair is €156 per month.

It pays to be savvy. Buy your Student Travelcard and save!

Razzle, Dazzle Christmas Make-Up Tutorial with Qualified Freelance Make-up artist, Aifric:

Occasional model, a recent graduate in PG Fashion Buying and former lecturer in ITEC Specialist Makeup Artistry. www.glamourandcouture.blogspot.com

Step 1

Prep your face making sure it’s clean & fresh before applying your primer. Gosh do a really good one & it’s usually on offer for €14.99 in selected pharmacies.

Step 2

Apply your foundation with a foundation brush, at the moment I love L’Oréals Lumi Magique which gives your skin a bit of a glow, it’s affordable & has medium coverage. The primer makes the foundation last longer also. Make sure your foundation matches your skin colour to your neck & you blend it properly. There’s nothing worse than a tide line on your neck ladies.

and Shine! Step 3

For your eyes which is my favourite part of creating a makeup look, I use MAC eye shadows for most of my looks as they’re the best I’ve used from all I’ve tested & they last. Yes they’re pricey but once you start building up a collection they will last you years. In saying that, Inglot also do great eye shadow palettes, you can get 3 of them in their magnetic case for €25 last time I checked and the Urban Decay Naked palettes are great too. They also do a nice highlighter for your eyes, you could have a base colour for your eyes & also a deeper one to intensify the look. I start applying MAC Nylon to the inner corner of my eye in a v shape then I use my finger to apply it to my brow bone lightly. I use MAC Saddle in my crease of my eye then I apply MAC woodwinked which is a beautiful gold metallic shade. I blend that slightly into my crease & then get a matte eye shadow to intensify the look by applying MAC embark to the socket & the outer corner of the eye. I also apply it under the eye. I use MAC Saddle under the eye to blend it & soften it and the same in the socket to the crease. I then get my blending brush & apply MAC Amber Lights to the middle of my eye as this makes your eyes pop. For the eyeliner I use either Maybelline or Rimmel gel liner & they both come with a brush or if you use liquid I like Collection2000. I find the gel liner is easier to give you that smokey eye effect & lasts longer but it

can be a little tricky to get at first as is the liquid liner but practice is key. I create a winged liner & apply it to my water line also. Once I’m happy with my eye look, it’s time for some glitter which really makes it a festive look. I get Inglot body glitter in no.57 or any safe nail art glitter and apply it to the middle of the eye with some eyelash adhesive. The ones that come with the eyelure falsh lashes it the best or the Duo glue. So the eyelash adhesive is applied lightly to the eye first then you add your glitter so it sticks. Once this is completed I get my lashes, make sure when you’re applying falsh lashes you make sure they’re not the synthetic ones & they fit the shape & length of your eye. If the false lashes are too long cut them at the end to fit your natural eye shape . The synthetic ones which look plastic are much harder to blend in with your own lashes & they can lift easily on either corner of the eyes. I like the penneys lashes (the natural ones), Ardell lashes & Eyelure. eBay is fantastic for picking up bargains of eyelashes packets so have a look to see can you buy a few in bulk. Once my lashes are in place I use mascara lightly to blend in with my own lashes easier, I love L’Oréals Voluminous or Essence have a nice affordable selection too.

Razzle, Dazzle and Shine! Step 5

Step 4

For the brows I use a gel liner, I find it gives a shaper shape & it glides so it’s much easier to apply. The key to giving your brows shape is the brush. Mac 266 angled brush is the best & this can be used for liner also. If you’re only starting to define your brows start off with eyeshadow, essence do a great brow set for under €4 & they also do a dupe to the Mac brush. It’s under €3. I’m dark haired so at the moment I’m using Sephora gel liner called cafe but depending on your hair colour if you’re not dark haired it’s harder to get a gel liner to suit your colouring so I’d recommend the makeup forever brow aqua colour which has many shades to suit you. You only need a small bit as it goes a long way. I begin at the thickest part of my brows & work over to the shape. The brush does most of the work for you because of the shape.

I usually move onto my cheeks next to contour & highlight. I love Bobbi Browns Golden light bronzer & also Egypt Wonder. In order to contour you must use a matte bronzer with no shimmer. I use a tapered brush by Sigma but you can get brilliant brushes from Real Techniques available online or in Boots which have sets for the face & eyes. They’re around €28 & Essence have a few handy brushes too for blending your eyes & a smokey eye brush. I apply the bronzer from the corner of the top of my ear & under my cheek bone. You can feel where you’re meant to apply it but taking 3 fingers & feeling under your cheekbone. The key to contouring is blending! I don’t apply the bronzer further than the middle of my eye. I then apply my blusher; gosh have a nice selection of blushers, as do L’Oréal, Rimmel & Revlon. I apply a colour suited to your complexion Ono the apples of my cheek & blend it upwards to my cheekbone. I then apply my highlighter, I use one my Inglot or Essence do a fab one with a few different colours.

Step 6

For my lips, depending whether you like to wear lipstick or not but for the festive season is in it a classic red lip is perfect to finish off this party look. I love MAC Russian Red or Ruby Woo but both Revlon & Rimmel have fantastic red lipsticks. Use either Revlon matte in really red or Rimmel in Kate moss shade 1. You’re now ready to take on the night looking dazzling, enjoy! Aifric xoxo

Q. Who or what influences your style?

A. Social media is a big influence, especially the daily mail online, to see what the celebs are wearing. I don’t have once specific person that I would just follow their style.

Q. Is there pressure on people to look good while in college?

A. Yes. I actually find in town, Trinity and DIT students have a lot more competitiveness, people want to look good where as people I know from UCD are more relaxed and away from it all, they don’t seem to worry about seeing people.

Hannah Glendon - 20, Marketing Jacket - Penny’s Scarf - Hollister

Top - River Island Jeans - Topshop

Boots- Office Bag - River Island

Q. Style Influence?

A. I love looking at recent trends in magazines but not really celebs. I kind of jump all over the place, I have no particular style icon.

Q. Do you think there is competition in college to look good?

A. Absolutely, especially in Aungier Street, every single day you come in, it’s like oh god, I don’t look good, I don’t have makeup on - you are freaking out. You need to keep your game face on at all times. It’s really good though and you see people and your like that looks great on them or I should try that, which definitely influences you.

Q. Favourite shops?

A. Zara, Topshop & River Island

Q. Style Influence?

A. People on the street.

Q. Favourite stores?

A. I love vintage and unique one off pieces.

Q. Do you think there is pressure on students to look good while in college?

A. Yeh there is a certain amount of pressure on students to look good in college, however there are a lot of good looking people everywhere but I wouldn’t feel pressured.

Niamh O’Donoghue - 20, Journalism Scarf - Penny’s Necklace - Penny’s Jacket - Penny’s

Leotard - American Apparel Shoes - Topshop

Q. Is there pressure on people to look good in college?

A. Not at all. Some days I like to make an effort because it makes me feel good about myself but at the end of the day it’s just college. My friends know I look fab anyway (joke)

Q. Style influences?

A. I don’t have anyone I follow as such. I get a lot of inspiration from the Visual Merchandising team I work with in Topshop. I love buying materials and seeing what I can do with them.

Q. Favourite Shops?

A. I love American Apparel (when it’s on sale, ha) and I love finding little gems online. Other than that you can’t go wrong with high street stores if you are like me and on the broke side of life.
