SPRING 2011

Starting a Tradition Captains Discuss Walk MS Team For most businesses, a tradition means a company holiday party or a yearly retreat. For the Eagle Group of Dover, one of their main traditions is participating in the Walk MS: Historic Dover Walk in support of Amy Pratt and others they know with MS. The tradition began when Amy was diagnosed with MS in 2002. Taking advice from her Aunt, who is also living with MS, she was determined not to give up, and to never stop moving. Since then, the team has participated in six walk events.

Jackie Poquette, the co-captain of the team and Human Resource Manager for the Eagle Group, has played a key role in growing this tradition since 2008. Last year, thanks to Amy and Jackie’s combined leadership, the Eagle Group Team recruited 106 participants and raised nearly $5,000. “We have watched our team change over time, as the tradition has grown. PRESIDENT’S IMPRESSIONS

If Not You, Then Who? My father used to say that to me all throughout my childhood. He used this especially when I didn’t want to do something. Typically it was used for a whole host of projects, chores, and basically anything he felt Kate Cowperthwait was rooted in morality or President common good. Delaware Chapter

I felt it was more child rearing by guilt, which I would come to know intimately as I grew. In the early years it was, “if you don’t play with that child, then who will? You have to set an example. You have to do the right thing. If you let your friends talk about others, what will they say about you?” In the 50s and 60s, it was about civil rights. Rosa Parks set this example on a bus in Alabama: “If we don’t stand firm against racial segregation, who will?” Guilt. Management by guilt, couched with social conscience. Now I’m an adult, with adult

decisions and consequences of my own. I probably managed my own children the same as my father, because we ended up at the same place. If not you, then who? If you don’t participate with your government, then you get the government you deserve. If we don’t participate in the MS Movement, then who will? Who will let our legislators know that there are real people here in Delaware who have real needs if we don’t tell them? If we as people who want to do something about MS don’t ask for more research funding, then who will? This spring, we have five WalkMS events. If you don’t ask your friends to come out and walk, then who will? We have an opportunity to help our elected officials hear what it’s like to have MS. If you don’t, then who will? I guess what I’m trying to say is, that if we don’t work to find the cure, then who will? It’s up to us, so won’t you join me? Because if you won’t, then who will?

Thinking about starting your own team this year? Both captains agree that the key is to start early and not be intimidated by fundraising. “Most people do not realize how big their networks really are. With e-mail, facebook, texting and phone calls, modern technology has made it simple to raise money,” advised Jackie. And, if you are a team vying for the 2011 best t-shirt in Dover, watch out for Team Eagle Group! They have launched a competition internally for naming the team and designing the t-shirt. Amy added, “Everyone knows someone affected by MS, and I like to get out there and sign people up.” Amy and Jackie hope that you’ll join the movement by signing up for a 2011 Walk MS event near you!

RESEARCH

The world of MS research In October, more than 5,500 neurologists and other investigators from around the world covered almost every aspect of current MS research in some 900 scientific presentations and posters at the annual ECTRIMS (European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis) conference in Gothenberg, Sweden.

In a separate session, Dr. Antonio Uccelli of the University of Genoa described attempts to stop MS progression using infusions of an individual’s own bone marrow or blood stem cells (mesenchymal cells). Dr. Uccelli is now collaborating on a study that he hopes will show that these cells are beneficial. Restoring function

NEWLY DIAGNOSED

Lower the bar There’s always some television special or magazine article to remind us what a pictureperfect holiday should be. But there are no holiday police who will make arrests if the presents aren’t hand-wrapped or the pies come from a bakery. Stress is a trigger for depression and so is exhaustion. “Start out with the attitude that the holidays are to be enjoyed—and enjoy what you can do,” Winter said. She suggests selecting one tradition that is most important to you and letting the rest go. “It might be making a batch of special cookies or attending a festive event with your family.”

“New” doesn’t have to mean “worse.” Some people find a scaled-back holiday is more enjoyable for everyone. You may rediscover how much you enjoy just being with friends and family after a long year. Roberta Winter, MSW, LCSW, MSCS, specialized in working with people with MS at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago for over 17 years and is now in private practice. She serves on several committees at the Greater Illinois Chapter and the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers.

“Plan just one major entertaining event—if that,” Winter said. “Then give yourself a lot of time to prepare. Prioritize. Ask people to bring things. Get takeout. Accept all offers of help.” Shopping online saves tiring trips – and gift wrapping. Gift cards are another time and energy saver. If invitations to holiday get-togethers seem endless, “accept what you can and don’t hesitate to say no. Don’t feel you have to explain why you can’t go,” Winter advised. Start anew Facing change is a difficult, even painful process—but it’s also essential for moving forward. “When you stop worrying over meeting the expectations of holidays past you’ll devise new ways to handle things,” Winter concluded.

VISIONS OF TECHNOLOGICAL EQUALITY The da Vinci Awards for Accessibility and Universal Design are given annually for innovations in technologies that enable equal access and opportunity for all people, including those with disabilities. At a gala event in September at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich., awards were presented for: • Hands-free speech recognition. VoicePower Ultimate makes speech recognition more productive for users with limited hand function. • A mobility vehicle. The MV-1 is the firstever vehicle designed from the ground up for wheelchair users. An MV-1 in a taxi fleet, for example, would make traveling easier for many. • An accessible park. Francis Motz County Park, in Michigan. • Music for everyone. Virtual Music Instrument software allows people with limited movement to create music by manipulating onscreen blocks of color. • Tongue-operated technology. The Tongue Drive System is a wireless and wearable technology that allows people to control computers, wheelchairs, cell phones and home appliances. Proceeds from corporate sponsorships and the gala raised almost $135,000 for the Michigan Chapter of the Society. Learn more at youtube. com/davinciawards. 10

WAYS TO GIVE

create a fundraiser to remember Did you know there are literally thousands of ways you can help? People who want to contribute to the mission to end MS are invited to dream up and produce original events that raise money for research and care. Every year, all over the country, volunteers organize and host golf, billiards and bowling tournaments, auctions and raffles, dinners, concerts, rummage sales, wine tastings, barbecues, motorcycle fun rides, skiing days and dances. Other events include a trap and skeet fun shoot, a bratwurst and bake sale, a boat show and a car show. A sailing party in Minnesota and the 7th Annual Bell Family Rabbit Hunt in Wisconsin each raised thousands of dollars. Holiday themes are also popular, such as Easter egg hunts or Halloween parties with a pay-to-enter costume contest.

The types of benefits to create are limited only by the imagination. “The idea is to turn someone’s passion into a fundraiser,” said Betty Ross, the Society’s associate vice president for Campaign Development. These events may raise anything from a few hundred to tens of thousands of dollars. There’s no minimum required and certainly no maximum, Ross said. And you don’t even have to create a brand-new event, she added. You can add a fundraising element to pretty much any existing occasion. How much time it takes to prepare depends on how elaborate the plans are. They can be as simple as asking friends to pay a few dollars at the door to attend a private party. On the other hand, a large-scale gala might take four to six months, or even longer, to plan. “We have a lot of cool Society events, but people have their own interests,” said Ross. “Community events reflect how you want to be involved.” Have a great idea? Call us and ask for Holly. TOLL-FREE NUMBER (800) 344-4867 | 11
