MOVING IS WHO WE ARE Youth in the MS movement The National MS Society understands that youth and teens with a connection to MS have unique experiences, and we recognize the importance of connecting them to other young people who share similar experiences. Because of this, we offer a number of ways for youth to get involved, meet peers, gain support and have fun.

Promising treatments for MS

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. The National MS Society’s medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professionals about using these medications and about effective strategies and treatments to manage symptoms. Teen programs foster friendships and more In 2006, Connor Harthorn attended Youth Camp. At 12 years old, being away from home for a week with people he didn’t know seemed daunting.

As it turned out, he loved Youth Camp, his first real interaction with the National MS Society.

Now 18, Connor has come back to Youth Camp every year and plans to return this summer as a counselor in training. Connor said, “I continued to go because I enjoy getting to know other kids whose parents have MS.” Connor Harthorn

Three of his younger siblings have followed in his footsteps, each attending every year since they were old enough to apply, while the fourth anxiously awaits his turn.

Connor has since participated in a number of other Society youth, teen and family programs, like Teen Council, Teen Crew and Teen Summits.

Through these programs, Connor has gained a number of close friends who understand where he’s coming from and share similar experiences related to having a parent who lives with MS. Connor said, “Attending Society events gives you opportunities to talk to people, but it also gives you an option to do fun things to get your mind off of MS.”

Youth Camp Experience a week of fun and adventure with other young people affected by MS.

June 17–22 n Amery, WI Do you know a child entering grades four through 12 who has a parent with MS or lives with someone with MS? Now in its 14th year, Youth Camp brings together youth from across the chapter and beyond for a week of summertime fun, memory-making and personal growth.

Youth Camp spans an entire island on the edge of beautiful Lake Wapogasset at YMCA Camp Icaghowan in Amery, Wis. Campers enjoy a variety of activities, such as:

Priority issues in MS advocacy The Upper Midwest Chapter names four areas of focus for the 2013 legislative session.

At the Upper Midwest Chapter, we relentlessly advocate for policies and research essential to people living with MS. Below are issues we’re monitoring during the 2013 legislative session.

On behalf of more than 17,000 people living with MS in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and portions of Wisconsin and Nebraska, the Upper Midwest Chapter advocates for the following priorities at the legislative level. n Support

MS research: We advocate for scientific and medical research that could stop the progression of MS, restore function and end MS forever. We support efforts to expand such research and oppose efforts that would hinder the ability to free the world from MS.

n Protect

programs for people living with MS: We work to limit and reverse the impact of state budget cuts on people living with MS and advocate for appropriations for human services, education, housing, public transportation and other programs that benefit people with MS and other disabilities and chronic disease.

n Advocate

for accessible, affordable and quality health care: We support initiatives that expand coverage, improve quality, increase access to care and provide greater affordability for people living with MS. We monitor and engage in developing health reform proposals, seek to improve health care programs and oppose legislation that negatively impacts people living with MS.

n Reduce

roadblocks to MS care: We support equitable and adequate coverage of medically necessary MS treatments, capping and reducing the out-of-pocket cost of MS care, eliminating specialty tiering and expanding prescription-assistance programs.

MS research symposium April 23, 5:30–7:45 p.m.

Holiday Inn and Conference Center, 1220 First Ave., Coralville, IA Learn about the latest, nationally recognized multiple sclerosis research projects and therapies, and have your questions answered by MS expert Dr. Claudia Lucchinetti from the Mayo Clinic Center for MS in Rochester, Minn. Plus, visit exhibitor tables to learn more about drug therapy options available to people with relapsing forms of MS. Attendees may check-in and enjoy appetizers from 5:30 to 6 p.m. The registration deadline is April 17.

Family ice cream social Saturday, June 15, 1–3 p.m.

Greenwood Park Open Shelter 2, 4500 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA Join us for an afternoon of fun at Greenwood Park! Meet other families affected by MS while enjoying ice cream and the nearby wading pool. Family outings are for families with children under age 18 who have MS or who have a parent or guardian with MS. They are intended for immediate family only. This includes two-parent families, single-parent families and domestic-partner families. The registration deadline is June 7.

MS Day Centers Activities at MS Day Centers help adults with MS remain active and independent and can maintain and improve physical strength, emotional health and overall quality of life. Although completely eliminating falls may be unrealistic, many of them occur under predictable circumstances. Navigators will support you from diagnosis through all the various changes that occur as you move forward living with MS.
