MOVING IS WHO WE ARE Keep moving with exercise and wellness programs and services The National MS Society understands the importance of physical activity and is working hard to increase exercise and movement opportunities chapterwide, but we want to make sure you’re aware of what’s already available.

Exercise and wellness classes Jeannie Zank, We partner with health and wellness facilities Program Coordinator, to provide classes specifically designed for Therapeutic people living with MS. Instructors receive Recreation specialized training and customize classes to best meet the needs of participants. For listings of MS classes by state, see pages 18, 21 and 24.

Promising treatments for MS

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. The National MS Society’s medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professionals about using these medications and about effective strategies and treatments to manage symptoms. She attributes her strength, stamina and endurance to water exercise.

Studies continue to show the benefits of exercise for people living with multiple sclerosis. MS exercise class participants like Judy Hull are living proof.

The Upper Midwest Chapter has partnered Judy Hull with the New Hope, Minn., YMCA for more than 13 years, providing water exercise to people in nearby communities.

Judy has participated in the water exercise class since January 2005. Her doctors have told her they’re amazed at how strong she is. She attributes her strength, stamina and endurance to water exercise.

In January 2008, Judy began volunteering as the class instructor. The YMCA trained her in life guarding, CPR, first aid, automated external defibrillation (AED), oxygen administration and human anatomy. She said leading the class is her way of giving back to the YMCA and the National MS Society.

Judy continues to participate not only because of exercise benefits, but because she enjoys the camaraderie. The group also goes out to lunch every Tuesday and Thursday after class.

Equipment loan program The Society provides short-term loans for various types of medical equipment and devices. “Try out” equipment before making an important purchase or simply borrow equipment to address a temporary need related to the unpredictable nature of MS. Equipment and devices include (but are not limited to): manual and power wheelchairs, hospital beds, patient lifts, walkers, scooters and shower chairs.

MS Classifieds MS Classifieds is a virtual marketplace to buy, sell and donate mobility and assistive devices. The National MS Society, Upper Midwest Chapter does not endorse or guarantee any products or services listed on this website. Visit MSClassifieds.org to place your item for sale or to donate. If you’re interested in acquiring an item on MSClassifieds.org, you must contact the seller directly.

Phone consultations Phone consultations are free and by appointment only. Consultations include family attorney consultations; employment consultations; tips on interviewing, resumes and more; employment discrimination/private disability consultations; and financial planning consultations. Financial assistance The Upper Midwest Chapter provides financial grants that can assist with securing medical equipment, daily living aids, funds for household chores, counseling, emergency assistance and more. If you have a request for financial assistance and are unsure if it would be covered, please call 800-582-5296 (option 1). Adaptive equipment/home and vehicle modification grant Financial assistance for home and vehicle modifications; medical equipment (wheelchairs, scooters, batteries, etc.); air conditioning units, walkers and exercise equipment; and transfer aids such as stair glides, electric lifts and urological products. The grant can assist with a maximum of $1,500 per person per fiscal year*.

Aids for daily living grant Financial assistance to help purchase non-medical devices to simplify basic daily living. Eligible items include (but are not limited to): dressing aids, household aids, cooling products, personal care/grooming aids, kitchen/eating aids, low-vision aids, recreational aids, walkers with brakes/seats, etc. The grant can assist with a maximum of $200 per person, per fiscal year*.

Care partner relief grant Financial assistance to provide temporary relief or respite for care partners and family care providers of people with MS, allowing the care provider to rest/relax or attend to short-term personal or business matters. The grant can assist with a maximum of $1,500 per person, per fiscal year*.

Chore services grant Financial assistance for small household chores, light meal preparation, laundry assistance, routine yard maintenance, snow removal, housekeeping/cleaning and essential errands â&#x20AC;&#x201D; helping people with MS remain independent and in their own homes. The grant can assist with a maximum of $750 per household, per fiscal year*.

Counseling assistance grant Financial assistance for fees and/or co-pays for counseling with a mental health counselor or therapist. The program can assist with a maximum of $750 per person, per fiscal year*.

Emergency financial assistance Financial assistance for emergency needs such as help with rent or mortgage payment or utility bill. Assistance is NOT available for medications, medical bill expenditures, credit card bills, taxes or for reimbursement of bills already paid by the person with MS. The grant is a one-time grant with a maximum of $500 per household. *Fiscal year: Oct. 1 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Sept. 30 30

Exercise and wellness grant Financial assistance for Society-sponsored exercise classes or other exercise or wellness programs approved by the Upper Midwest Chapter. The grant can assist with up to $250 per person per fiscal year*.

MS Scholarship Program We believe MS should not stand in the way of an education. The National MS Society Scholarship Program helps students affected by MS pursue a post-secondary education. Enrollment for the MS Scholarship Program is typically open from October to January each year.

Medical transportation grant Financial assistance to help with costs of transportation to medical appointments. The grant can assist with a maximum of $250 per person, per fiscal year*.

Physical/occupational therapy home assessment grant Limited financial assistance to pay for a licensed physical or occupational therapist to evaluate your home for needed modifications, recommend medical equipment and provide general recommendations for making your home more accessible to accommodate your day-to-day needs.

The grant can assist with a maximum of $500 per person, per fiscal year*. *Fiscal year: Oct. 1 – Sept. 30
