Connie Gunderson Warner, Program Coordinator
Living with MS can be tough, and it’s important to have a person to turn to for support. Some relationships can give you courage you never thought you had, which is why the Upper Midwest Chapter provides a program through which you can meet another person who understands the daily challenges and triumphs of living with MS.
Programs & Resources Guide Programs & Resources Guide is a free publication of the National MS Society 200 12th Ave. S. Minneapolis, MN 55415-1255 800-582-5296 proconnect@MSsociety.org Editors Maggie Flanagan Steve Korngable Chapter President Holly Anderson
The MS Person-to-Person program (formerly the Mentor Program) thoughtfully connects two people who live with MS or who have first-hand experience with the disease. Program participants visit in-person, on the phone, and through emails, texts and social media. If you think peer support might be beneficial to you, we can help you find a connection, whether you live with MS, are a family member of a person who has MS or a caregiver. To learn more about the MS Person-to-Person program, contact Connie at 612-335-7964, 800-582-5296 (option 2) or connie.gundersonwarner@nmss.org. In addition to the chapter’s MS Person-to-Person program, the Society offers ways to conveniently connect online. Visit nationalMSsociety.org and click “online community” in the top-level navigation. You can also find support by calling the MSFriends helpline. Visit nationalMSsociety.org and search “MSFriends” or call 866-673-7436.
Sponsorship of Society programs or events does not connote the National Multiple Sclerosis Society recognizes superiority in products or services provided by the sponsoring entity over other entities providing like or similar products or services.
Promising treatments for MS
Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. The National MS Society’s medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professionals about using these medications and about effective strategies and treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please visit nationalMSsociety.org or call 800-582-5296 to learn more.

MS Person-to-Person up close: Pam’s Connection Pam Zurvalec was diagnosed with MS eight years ago. She and her husband live in a small town in northern Minnesota. However, over the past few years, her husband’s work has required that they live away from home — and away from friends and family. Wanting to strengthen her support network, Pam turned to the MS Person-to-Person program (formerly the Mentor Program). She discussed what she was looking for with Program Coordinator Connie Gunderson Warner who connected her with peer support volunteer Sue Dosen. Pam Zurvalec
Weekly visits, sometimes by phone or email, with Sue have provided her with consistent support from someone who understands life with MS. When asked about their connection, Pam said “She’s helped me tremendously. Sue and I have become very good friends. I can tell her anything. We talk about living with MS, but also our personal lives.” Pam and Sue agree their friendship has helped them both through many ups and downs. See page 2 for more information about the MS Person-to-Person program and other Society programs designed to build connections.

FEATURE PROGRAM
Unleash your power at your state capitol As a person affected by MS — when it comes to important issues like MS research and health care affordability — you have the power to affect critical decisions made by lawmakers. The recent election brought many new faces to state capitols across the chapter area. With health reform a reality and these new officials in office, your voice as an MS activist is more critical than ever. One of the most meaningful ways to unleash your power as an advocate is to participate in your local MS Day at the Capitol. This is an opportunity to learn how to be an effective MS activist, meet others who are passionate about MS-related policies and educate legislators about the disease.

MS KILLS CONNECTION
Multiple sclerosis destroys connections. It disconnects the mind from the body and people from each other. But what if we could defy this disease with the very thing it seeks to destroy: CONNECTION connections. Would we share more knowledge? More questions? KILLS MS More answers? More hope? Maybe, by connecting enough small victories, we could win some really big ones. MS Connection — a new online community that’s all about making meaningful connections when, where and how you want — provides easy access to the best content and resources the MS community can bring you. You’ll learn about the topics that are most important to you, connect with people you want to connect with and have expert MS information right at your fingertips.
