Promising treatments for MS

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the Society today at nationalMSsociety.org or 800-582-5296 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

Why staying fit matters “Joining a group reduces isolation and gives you an opportunity to meet other people living in your community who also have MS. Once I got involved, I couldn’t stay away.” — Sheldon Haaland When Sheldon Haaland was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1988, his friends encouraged him to attend an exercise program to connect with others and stay on top of his MS Sheldon Haaland symptoms. Two years after his diagnosis, he reluctantly joined an MS fitness group in Marshall, Minn.

to walk.” Additionally, exercise can serve as an outlet for stress reduction and help maximize independence.

Before Sheldon joined the group, exercise wasn’t a part of his daily routine. He thought getting to and from an exercise facility was a hassle, but his neurologist told him along with medications, exercise is an important part of a treatment plan. It can help decrease complications that arise from spasticity, muscular fatigue and weakness. Sheldon says walking and water exercise helps his muscles stay loose and keeps him moving. “Without regular exercise, I think it’d be a lot more challenging

“Joining a group reduces isolation and gives you an opportunity to meet other people living in your community who also have MS,” he says. “Once I got involved, I couldn’t stay away.”

The Marshall water exercise group meets twice a week at the YMCA. Six people, plus or minus a few, meet regularly, and Sheldon says he’s formed some special bonds with others in his group. A former farmer, he met another man his age who also used to farm. They walk and talk two hours a week.

The National MS Society works with community fitness facilities to provide exercise programs, ranging from yoga to Tai Chi, to strength training and low-impact water exercise, for people living with MS.

What’s your story? “The more I can share my story, the more awareness I can bring. With more awareness comes more research, and with more research, hopefully a CURE! I also share my story so people can see with both good and bad days, I can still have a positive outlook, be a loving and mom, wife and friend, and be passionate about my job.” — Annie Weber

You may think your story of living with MS isn’t remarkable or exciting, but think again! You don’t need to climb a mountain, raise thousands of dollars or bike across the country to have a compelling story. Everyone’s experience is unique. Whether you’re speaking to a group of people or just one person, your story has the power to educate people and inspire them to get more involved in the movement to end MS.

Think about these questions and jot down your thoughts. n What

do you remember from the day you were diagnosed?

n In

what ways does MS affect you or your family, and how are you moving forward in spite of the disease?

n How

has MS changed you?

n What

Get involved The National MS Society would like to use your story as we prepare for the legislative session and MS Awareness Week. If you’d like to help, contact Jenna at 612-335-7981 or jenna.washnieski@nmss.org.

Do you want an MS exercise program in your community? Do you work at a fitness facility or know someone who does?

The chapter provides more than 25 exercise programs, including: n water

exercise; n yoga;

n Tai

Chi; and n group exercise.

You can help expand programs to communities across the state, making the benefits of exercise available to more people with MS. Financial assistance is available to members, if needed.

Jeannie Zank, C.T.R.S., Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator

If you have questions or are interested in starting an exercise program in your community, contact Jeannie, C.T.R.S., at 612-335-7939 or jeannie.zank@nmss.org.

When care partners need a break Caring for someone with MS can be deeply satisfying, but also physically and emotionally exhausting. Respite — temporary relief for family care partners — is an important family preservation and support service.

We’re here to help. The National MS Society provides care partner relief grants to help cover the cost of home care or a temporary stay in a skilled facility so care partners can take a break. For more information, contact Scott at 612-335-7900, 800-582-5296 or scott.ahlgren@nmss.org.

Leave your legacy In 2010, the National MS Society received more than $7.5 million in legacy and bequest gifts. Every planned gift makes an impact — many of these donations were less than $1,000. Join other people with unparalleled passion by creating your

legacy today with a gift through your will, retirement or life insurance plan.
