MOVING IS WHO WE ARE Hello! My name is Bethany Hansen.

I’m the newest director of programs at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Minnesota Chapter. I’m thrilled to be doing such important work alongside the wonderful Minnesota staff, volunteers and others dedicated to the movement to end MS. My primary focus is youth and family Bethany Hansen, Director of Programs programming, and I’m happy to announce several upcoming events for families, youth, people in their 20s and 30s, and care partners.

Family program: Enjoy a “day at camp” at the 2011 Family Outing July 23, at Camp Singing Hills in Waterville, Minn.

Spend time together and meet other families who are affected

by MS. For more information, see page 19.

Youth program: Youth Camp brings together youth grades four through 12 for a week of summertime fun, memory-making and personal growth. This year’s Youth Camp is at a beautiful new location and Minnesota Chapter staff and volunteers are hard at work planning a variety of activities so campers can make friends, challenge themselves, have fun and relax. See page 17 for more information.

Client group outing: People in their 20s and 30s who have MS or have a close connection to MS will have the opportunity to connect with other young adults during a group outing at the Minnesota Zoo June 4, 2011. The chapter also regularly hosts happy hour socials for both 20s and 30s and care partner groups.

Promising treatments for MS

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms.

Build relationships, raise awareness Tips for meeting with your legislator: n

During summer and fall, legislators are done with session and back in their districts. This is an excellent time to speak with them.

Contact your legislator, identify yourself as a constituent and explain your involvement as a leader in your community for the National MS Society.

If you schedule a meeting, let the Minnesota Chapter know. We can provide materials and talking points that may be helpful.

In the busy world of e-mail, Facebook and texting, it can seem challenging to find time for a face-to-face conversation. However, the one-on-one work you do can have a huge impact — especially when it comes to educating people about multiple sclerosis.

This year, the Minnesota Chapter reached out to people affected by MS statewide, and the primary thing we heard was that people with MS wished others could understand what it’s like to live with the disease. It’s incredibly important people with MS are that voice of awareness in their community.

Colleen Sazama, facilitator of the Perham Tri-County MS Group, decided to reach out to her state legislators this winter. She invited Representative Mark Murdock and Senator Gretchen Hoffman to her group to hear from 26 people affected by MS. “We had a wonderful, positive response from our group and the community,” said Sazama. “We discussed the proposed budget cuts, our concerns on transportation in rural communities and the unique challenges we face with MS.” Meeting with legislators in your district is an excellent opportunity to share your story, educate them on issues that affect people with MS and also to listen to your legislator’s position on topics that are important to your community.

Women’s Conference Join other women living with MS for inspiration, socializing and fun.

May 14 n Vadnais Heights Take the day off from family, work and everyday life to join other women living with MS at the fifth annual Women’s Conference.

Learn about and discuss the art of balancing work and family and ways to better manage living with MS. At the conference, Dr. Gareth Parry, neurologist and medical director of the University of Minnesota MS Center, will discuss women’s issues and provide the latest in MS research. Kate Wolfe-Jenson, an artist and author of “Dancing with Monsters,” will talk about her life with MS and the process of “chronic healing,” as well as introduce you to tools and practices that can help you lead a fuller life with MS. Thia Casanova will provide an opportunity to relax with yoga.

Plus, enjoy a fashion show by Christopher & Banks®. Learn tips on accessorizing, what’s new for spring and summer and keeping a fresh, updated look on a budget.

Conference participants will have time to socialize during lunch, and door prizes will be drawn at the end of the day.

May 21 n Fergus Falls Join other people affected by multiple sclerosis to learn about strategies for facing challenges of the disease and much more. This unique program also offers afternoon breakout sessions addressing the needs of care partners as well as men and women living with MS.

General session Whether you care for a person with MS or live with the disease yourself, MS can upset expectations and disrupt dreams. Learn strategies for managing these changes with Thomas M. Ellis, licensed marriage and family therapist and author of “This Thing Called Grief: New Understandings of Loss.”

Breakout sessions Join Ellis for an engaging, interactive discussion with other care partners, whether you are a spouse, partner, family member or friend of someone with MS. Discuss common issues for women living with MS with Dr. Yelena Usmanova, neurologist at the Minneapolis Clinic of Neurology. Men’s Day Spend time with the guys.

June 4 n Plymouth Men living with multiple sclerosis face unique challenges that affect them differently than women. MS also can challenge traditional male roles and support networks.

Join other men who understand what it’s like to live with MS at this one-day program featuring a combination of indoor and outdoor activities.

The program — held at French Regional Park in Plymouth, Minn. — provides an opportunity to connect with other men, learn and have a lot of fun at the same time.

Choose from a number of outdoor activities, including: n fishing; n canoeing n archery;

and kayaking;

n geocaching.

June 18 n Moorhead Learn about the latest MS research and therapies and have your questions answered by a local MS expert. In addition, learn about clinical trials in which people with MS can participate and what to expect from the experience.

Featured presenter Dr. Susan Scarberry is medical director of Sanford Multiple Sclerosis Center in Fargo, N.D. She is board certified in neurology and has successfully completed the Multiple Sclerosis Comprehensive Treatment Training program.

Scarberry is involved in MS clinical research, serves on the clinical advisory committee for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, North Central States Chapter and is a member of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers. She is also a member of the multiple sclerosis section and the neuromuscular section of the American Academy of Neurology.

Youth Camp 2011 Join the fun with other young people touched by MS.

June 20-25 n Amery, WI Do you know a child entering grade four through 12 who has a parent with MS or lives with someone with MS? Now in its 12th year, Youth Camp brings young people together for a week of summertime fun, memory-making and personal growth.

This year, Youth Camp will span an entire island on the edge of beautiful Lake Wapogasset, at YMCA Camp Icaghowan near Amery, Wis. Campers can enjoy a variety of activities, such as: n swimming; n high

campfires.

Teens who are 18 years old have the option to attend as a camper or to apply to be a counselor in training.

Family Outing A fun day for the whole family!

July 23 n Waterville Come to Camp Singing Hills for a day of fun, food and family! Spend time together and meet other families affected by MS. Families can enjoy a variety of activities, including team building, arts and crafts and archery. The day also includes activities designed to help families explore the unique experience of living with MS. The Family Outing is for families with a parent or guardian who has multiple sclerosis with children under age 18. This includes two-parent families, single-parent families and domestic-partner families.

Camp Singing Hills is located just outside Waterville, Minn., on 170 acres of beautiful maple forests, and includes a beach on Fish Lake.

Aids for Daily Living Grant enhanced to meet your needs For many years, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Minnesota Chapter has had the privilege of offering its members limited financial assistance for a wide variety of non-medical devices through the Aids for Daily Living (ADL) Grant.

ADL, underwritten in part by The Joanne Levin Endowment Fund, helps members purchase items such as cooling vests, bath safety products, canes, vision aids, dressing and eating aids and more to help people with MS.

The Minnesota Chapter Aids for Daily Living Grant, which offers financial assistance for non-medical devices to people with MS, has been enhanced to offer clients up to $200 per fiscal year.

Often times, members purchase items that are close to the program’s $100 limit (per fiscal year) and have to forgo receiving other necessary aids. The Minnesota Chapter is pleased to announce the program has been enhanced to offer clients up to $200 per fiscal year. Also, financial help now is provided for items such as: n e-readers, n walkers

like the Kindle and Nook;

Champions program gives cyclists a reason to ride Champions is a program created to help Bike MS: C.H. Robinson Worldwide MS 150 Ride cyclists connect with people living with MS to foster education, awareness, gratitude and, most importantly, hope. The Champions program gives cyclists in the two-day, 150-mile ride a chance to participate in honor of someone with MS — making the experience more fulfilling. Cyclists wear an identifier (a scarf, pin, bracelet, etc.) symbolizing the connection while they ride.
