How often do you find yourself talking to people about multiple sclerosis or your involvement with the MS Society? Maybe it’s once a day or once a week. You may not even realize you’re making a significant impact in the MS movement — but you are.

Just think, if everyone reading this newsletter talked to two people each week, we would reach about 80,000 people each month, and more than one million people each year with information about MS and the MS Society!

Each person involved in the MS movement has the power to make a difference. By simply talking to people about your experience with MS, wearing your Walk MS T-shirt or sharing research news with family and friends, you raise awareness in a big way. (See Page 5 to learn how you can get rewarded for these simple things.)

One of the biggest ways we raise awareness is through our presence at the Minnesota State Fair, which provides an opportunity to educate tens of thousands of people about the MS movement. On the Move “Please come and enjoy an afternoon with people who all have something in common.”

Last year when Pat Budnik was asked to attend the On the Move Luncheon, she didn’t know what to expect.

“I was fortunate to sit with the most interesting people, including many outstanding volunteers,” she said.

“I thought it would be an ordinary luncheon with a Pat Budnik silent auction and speaker,” Pat said. “But since the Minnesota Chapter never does anything just ordinary — it was much nicer than I had imagined.”

Pat learned about the luncheon from Katy Hunchis Holden while both women were participating in a photo shoot for the “Why Women?” educational campaign about gender differences in MS. Katy, who serves on the luncheon’s planning committee, encouraged Pat to check it out.

The On the Move luncheon not only has an inspirational speaker and auctions, but excellent networking opportunities as well. Attendees have the opportunity to rub elbows with other people with MS, volunteers, local neurologists, top donors, chapter staff and even local celebrities.

This was one of the things Pat enjoyed most about the event.

Pat enjoyed herself so much she decided to join Katy and the luncheon’s planning committee.

The committee works all year to promote the event, seek auction items and recruit table sponsors. “I’m always looking for a challenge.

I have a lot of ideas and I like to see what I can do to accomplish them.”

Pat encourages others people to attend. “If you are able to come, please do! You won’t be sorry!

It’s a very nice afternoon with people who all have something in common.”

This year’s keynote speaker is Minnesota’s own Kevin Kling, a playwright and storyteller whose commentaries can be heard on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.” Born with a congenital birth defect in his left arm, Kling’s right arm was rendered immobile in a motorcycle accident six years ago. Kling’s super-sized determination and candid sense of humor shine through despite the daily challenges of life with physical disabilities.

MS and Fatigue Take control of MS-related fatigue.

Aug. 6 n Brainerd Fatigue is the number one symptom reported by people living with multiple sclerosis. But it’s also considered an “invisible” symptom, which means family members, friends and co-workers of people with MS don’t always understand how fatigue affects day-to-day living. This can be frustrating to people with the disease.

Several different kinds of fatigue occur in MS. For example, people who have bladder dysfunction, producing nighttime awakenings or nocturnal muscle spasms, may experience fatigue as a result of sleep deprivation. People who are depressed may also suffer fatigue. And anyone who needs to expend considerable effort to complete daily tasks may suffer from fatigue as well.

In addition to these sources of fatigue, there is another type of fatigue — referred to as lassitude — that is unique to people with MS. Researchers are beginning to outline the characteristics of this “MS fatigue” that make it different from fatigue experienced by people without MS. Aug. 13 n Bloomington Depression can affect people in different ways — ranging from feeling down for a few hours on a bad day to severe clinical depression lasting several months. Depression, in its various forms, is common during the course of multiple sclerosis.

In fact, studies suggest that clinical depression, the severest form of depression, is more frequent in people with MS than the general population or people with other chronic, disabling conditions.

Depression is not something to be ashamed of or hidden, nor does it indicate weak character. Also, depression is not something a person can control or prevent. In its most severe forms, depression

appears to be a chemical imbalance that can occur at any time, even when life is going well.

Beat the heat Tips to stay cool this summer.

Other tips to beat the heat n

Drink plenty of fluids.

n

Avoid caffeine as this acts as a diuretic.

n

Use fans, air conditioning or hand-held spray bottles. Air-conditioners can be tax-deductible.

n

Exercise in a cool environment.

n

If you exercise outside, pick the cooler times of the day, usually early morning or evening.

n

To decrease the heating effects of exercise, try “pre-cooling” in a cool bath. The water temperature should be lukewarm to start.

Continue adding cooler water over a period of 20 to 30 minutes.

n

A simple damp towel can be helpful if you do not have a cooling neck wrap.

n

Wear wide brimmed hats and light-colored, loose clothing.

Tips to stay cool this summer.

Many people with multiple sclerosis experience a temporary worsening of symptoms when the weather is very hot or humid or they run a fever, sunbathe, get overheated from exercise, or take very hot showers or baths. This tends to be especially challenging during the summer.

But there are many way to combat the effects of heat in MS, including a variety of aids for daily living especially designed for this purpose. For instance, cooling vests are simple and lightweight and help keep your core temperature to a manageable level. Foot coolers and cooling caps, neck wraps and bra pads are also available to help you beat the heat. The Minnesota Chapter’s Aids for Daily Living Grant can help you purchase these items.
