JOIN THE MOVEMENT
MOVING IS WHO WE ARE “If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.” – Booker T. Washington
Megan Sparks, Director of Community Relations and Volunteerism
Last spring we told you about a study that found a significant connection between volunteering and good health. But we don’t need science to tell us that helping others just feels good.
This is certainly true for the MS movement. Every day, people join our movement by giving their time, their expertise, their talents and their money — whether it’s participating in Bike MS or Walk MS events, speaking in their communities to raise awareness about MS, or spending time with others living with the disease to offer support and encouragement. And while we are doing a great deal, there is always more to be done. That’s why it’s important that we continue mobilizing the talents and resources of the thousands of people in our area who want to do something about MS. To help us do that, we are launching the Move it Forward program. This program will help foster meaningful connections between fundraisers, volunteers, people living with MS and the general public and create new ways for people to fuel our movement. Simply said, this program will strengthen people’s passion for the movement and give them even more ways to feel good about giving back. Lift up someone else, lift up yourself, and help us move forward toward a world free of MS. Learn more Read more about Move it Forward on Page 5. Sponsorship of society programs or events does not connote that the National Multiple Sclerosis Society recognizes superiority in products or services provided by the sponsoring entity over other entities providing like or similar products or services.

Promising treatments for MS
Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the Society today at www.nationalMSsociety.org or 1-800-582-5296 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

Learning from others who care “Through my extended MS family, I’ve gained so much.”
– Paul Tuveson, MS care partner
It was curiosity that first drew Paul Tuveson to attend a Care Partner Getaway a couple years ago. Paul, whose wife, Dawn, lives with multiple Paul Tuveson sclerosis, wanted to connect with other care partners and learn from their experiences.
along with Dawn’s MS. Paul has been helping more with transportation, errands and house cleaning because of Dawn’s MS-related fatigue. “While my wife has MS, I live with it, too,” he said.
“People with MS face different challenges, and so do their spouses or partners,” Paul said. “I wanted to learn how other care partners adapted to manage the additional duties and challenges of MS.” Since then, Paul has attended a number of MS Society programs for people with MS and their families, which he says have helped him immensely. “Through my extended MS family, I’ve gained so much. The support of other care partners and MS Society staff has been extremely valuable to me.” Over time, support and education programs like this have become even more valuable to Paul, as his care partner responsibilities have changed
4
Paul is looking forward to reconnecting with his MS support network at the Care Partner Retreat Jan. 9 (see Page 15). According to Paul, connecting with other care partners helps him discover strategies to be a better care partner to Dawn and helps to address his own concerns about the disease. “I never dreamed I would find as many friends as I have developed within the MS community,” Paul said. “For me, the society’s care partner programs have contributed greatly to my circle of friends.”

Back to Fitness Discover the benefits exercise can bring to your life.
At a doctor’s visit last year, Michelle Hergesheimer — who lives with multiple sclerosis — learned about the Back to Fitness program at the Minneapolis Clinic of Neurology. The program provides people with MS individualized therapeutic conditioning exercises, designed by an experienced clinical exercise physiologist, to help restore ability and balance. It can also help reduce pain, tightness and spasms and improve posture and daily energy levels. Michelle had been experiencing increased walking difficulty and decided to give it a try. She met with an exercise physiologist who developed a customized exercise plan she could do on her own. After meeting regularly for the first few months, she now visits her physiologist only twice a year. Michelle appreciates being able to do the exercises at home and has seen improvements in her strength and endurance. “When I first started, I couldn’t walk on the treadmill at the gym and now I can walk a half mile,” Michelle said.

You do not need to be a patient at the Minneapolis Clinic to participate and many insurance plans cover the Back to Fitness program. Plus, this program is supported through generous grants from Questcore Pharmaceuticals and Genzyme Corporation to help participants with MS who have no insurance or an insurance policy with a front-end deductible of $1,000 or more. “While we discuss our experiences as men with a partner with MS, the intent of our group is primarily social, affording members some good natured camaraderie and a couple hours of respite from daily caregiving. We talk about whatever is on our minds and
affected by MS, enjoy lively discussions, learn valuable information and ways to cope with challenges, have fun and be inspired. Read about groups and clubs that are moving forward together and find a club or group in your community that’s right for you.

Need a break? Caring for someone with multiple sclerosis can be deeply satisfying, but also physically and emotionally exhausting. Taking time for rest and relaxation and attending to personal or business matters is essential to self-care.
We’re here to help. The Care Partner Relief Grant helps cover the cost of home care or a temporary stay in a skilled facility so care partners can take a break. To learn more, contact Scott Ahlgren at 612-335-7900, 800-582-5296 or sahlgren@MSsociety.org.
