Welcome to Sapulpa, Oklahoma! Sapulpa is a growing community of just over 23,000 residents with a focus on business opportunities, public private partnerships, entrepreneurships, festivals, the arts, education, business expansion, and downtown revitalization. Increased rooftops and growth in industry along with quality-of-life amenities are drawing young professionals and new families to our city, as we pursue retail, restaurant, and entertainment through economic development.

Sapulpa has 7 beautiful parks and 2 lakes that are stocked twice a year. Our parks include an aquatics center, a state-of-the-art soccer complex, and a new all-inclusive playground at Liberty Park for children of all physical capabilities. The Everyday Heroes Inclusive Playground is a National Demonstration Site for the “7 Principles of Inclusive Playground Design”, incorporating all seven principles while celebrating the hero within each of us. Our largest park, Kelley Lane, hosts the Rock Creek Festival, Spooktacular at Halloween, a Reindeer run in December, a dog park, and home to several access points for our walking trails. Rock Creek Golf Course on Route 66 is a picturesque 18-hole public course. The Bartlett Sports Complex is in its third phase of build-out. This new 100-acre complex will allow for all little league baseball, softball, and soccer in one convenient location.

Historic Route 66 is the main thoroughfare running through downtown. Two newly designed and refurbished downtown alleyways along with a new downtown pocket park provide space to walk, visit, attend open markets, and simply gather for a Rt 66 picture spot. Sapulpa is home to events such as the Christmas Chute, Hobson Hops, the Route 66 Blowout, Rock the Route, and many others. Sapulpa was honored to be recognized by “Good Morning America” as one of the “Merriest Main Streets in America” during Christmas as well as being named Oklahoma’s #1 Christmas attraction by Oklahoma Magazine.

We pride ourselves on providing our citizens with an open and accessible form of government that encourages involvement in the shaping of our community and do so by providing a well-run local government entity with community-driven values and high standards. 10 | Who’s Who
Who’s Who
Sapulpa Chamber of Commerce | 11 www.sapulpachamber.com
There is only one Sapulpa.

Located in northeastern Oklahoma and named after a Native American — its first permanent resident — Sapulpa is a story like so many other towns that sprang up along the railroad or were born out of the great westward expansion, or came into being in the exciting days of the oil boom.

Many of those stories suffered a bleak ending as the residents moved elsewhere and the glory days faded from memory. Sapulpa however, is a community that remains vibrant and continues to find new ways to stay relevant in an ever-changing world.

Around 1850, Chief Sapulpa set up a trading post near what is now the intersection of Polecat and Rock Creeks, about one mile southeast of the town that would eventually bear his name. “Chief” Sapulpa — so called by the railroad workers that came to the area — was not an actual chief and was, in fact, part of the forced migration of Native Americans from the Southeast. U.S. Chief Sapulpa was a full-blooded lower Creek Indian of the Kasihta Tribe in Osocheetown, Alabama. As the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad moved into the territory, Sapulpa was said to have befriended the workers and often did business with them. The year after his death, the train station for the expanding railroad was completed, and it became known as Sapulpa Station.

When the iconic Glenn Pool southeast of town made oil barons out of neighbors, Sapulpa and surrounding communities quickly sprang up, eager to get in on the “black gold” craze. Because it was the “end of the tracks” town for the railroad, Sapulpa fared better than other communities with its easy access to the fastest method of traveling across the country. Sapulpa became so synonymous with oil that it eventually became known as the “Oil City of the Southwest.”

After the oil boom subsided, Sapulpa proved its longevity by taking up new endeavors to meet the needs of the people. Brick, tile, and glass became necessary, so Sapulpa produced them, in large quantities and by several employers.

After World War 2, Sapulpa was back in the spotlight as the heart of the world-famous Route 66, becoming a popular stop for the thousands of families and tourists that continue to travel the Mother Road to this day.

Even as families migrated to suburban living and left other cities struggling to hold onto their heritage, downtown Sapulpa has continued to hum steadily along, finding new uses in retail, event venues,

12 | Then and Now Then and Now

coffee shops and office spaces for buildings that were formerly car dealerships or livery stables.

In 2020, a $40-million General Obligation bond passed. So far, that bond has delivered a brand new fire station and updates to several roads, traffic lights, playgrounds, and sports complexes. Also expected is a reimagined Booker T. Washington Recreation Center, and an overhauled Dewey streetscape redesign, bringing a more pedestrian-friendly Route 66 to downtown Sapulpa.

In 2022, a group of community volunteers came together, determined to make downtown Sapulpa a holiday destination. By creating a unique walkable winter wonderland through the heart of downtown Sapulpa, the former “Oil City of the Southwest” found a fresh crop of travelers under it’s new found label as a premier holiday attraction called Sapulpa’s Route 66 Christmas Chute. That first year, Sapulpa was awarded the title of ‘Merriest Main Street” by the nationally-syndicated Today Show, and that following spring, Sapulpa took home six trophies from the Oklahoma Main Street Awards. In the 2023 holiday season, more than 406,000 people came to Sapulpa during the two-month span of the Christmas Chute, and the committee is working on an even better experience for the 2024 season.

In 2023, a $279 million school bond was passed, starting the process of a new high school, a new performing arts center, a state-of-the-art “ educational pathways” program, and additional updates to athletics facilities. Construction for the new high school is expected to be completed in 2027.

In 2026, Sapulpa will once again be a welcoming attraction for scores of tourists traveling Rout 66 for the famous highway’s centennial. While nostalgic drivers may see plenty of abandoned buildings and quiet downtowns devoid of life on their trip, they certainly won’t find that in Sapulpa. Now thriving with its rich heritage and progressive goals, Sapulpa’s story is one that’s unlike any other. After all, there’s only one Sapulpa.

Why Sapulpa?

Brian and Anna Mitchell’s arrival in Sapulpa began like many others over the years, just looking for a place to belong while starting a family. They began in the Jenks/Bixby area but were discontented with the number of people moving into the area.

“We’re from a small town in Missouri,” Brian Mitchell began, “and so, we just got sort of overwhelmed with the growth (in Bixby). We just couldn’t breathe.”

“The housing addition we were in, when we moved there in 2002, there were like 50 houses,” Anna said. “When we left, there were 2000. We were told our kids would have possibly over 50 students in their class. We needed something smaller.”

They began to explore their options for a smaller town outside of Tulsa, and in 2016, found a house in Sapulpa, just around the corner from Freedom Elementary. The Mitchells seemed to have found the tranquil neighborhood and school system they were looking for, but Sapulpa was not done.

“At the time, I was still practicing law in Tulsa. We had an office at 21st and Lewis,” Brian said. “It was literally a 45-minute drive, sometimes an hour, to leave the house and get to my office. It was 2 hours a day just commuting to and from work.”

By then, the Mitchells had started homeschooling their kids and life had slowed down significantly. Anna said that they intentionally looked at slowing the rest of their life down. “He does not need to be driving downtown,” she said.

In 2019 the Mitchells decided to move the law practice to Sapulpa, opening a new office in a renovated building on Hobson Avenue, bringing

five of their ten attorneys with them. “It’s interesting, because they all live in Tulsa, but they’ll tell you, it’s easier to get here than to get to the office in Tulsa,” Brian said.

What about the clients? Surely a clientele that has been used to visiting their offices in Tulsa wouldn’t appreciate the trek to Sapulpa. Brian says the response has been the exact opposite.

“There’s not been a single client that has balked, or had any issue with it at all. In fact, they say it’s so nice to be able to pull up right at the front and walk in.”

“My whole attitude changed,” Brian said. “I dress completely differently. It’s a completely different atmosphere. A lot more laid back.”

The Mitchells still say the best is yet to come. “There’s all-new ownership of what percentage of downtown Sapulpa? Fifty percent? Even after COVID, there’s still a lot happening. Sapulpa is still very up and coming.”

Anna in particular gives the Sapulpa Chamber of Commerce a lot of credit for getting her plugged into the community.

“When they did our ribbon cutting, I told Brian, ‘we have to get involved,’ and that was an assignment he gave me. I just didn’t know how plugged in I was gonna get,” she said. Now serving on multiple committees for the Chamber and Christmas Chute, Anna is as involved as anyone, and she and Brian still say it’s been the best decision they could’ve made.

“I mean, this was what we were looking for in moving to a small town,” she said, “but it’s been even more than we expected.”

14 | Why Sapulpa?
Three business owners talk about why they moved their business to Sapulpa Brian and Anna Mitchell

By the time we interviewed Chad for this year’s Chamber guide, his new business, Sugar Llama’s, was celebrating a year in Sapulpa.

This dessert restaurant serves everything from gourmet donuts to ice cream to Red Bull mixers and coffee, but owner Chad O’Roark says the best experience has been from the community that welcomed them to town.

“Sapulpa wasn’t my first choice and it wasn’t my last choice,” he said. “We made multiple trips around the Tulsa area and the people of Sapulpa were just incredibly welcoming, and continue to be, to this day.”

Chad says his wife basically made the decision for them when she walked through the door for the first time.

“She said, ‘oh my gosh, this is it. This is already a Sugar Llama’s.’ The decor matches perfectly with what we were trying to do, and there wasn’t another store anywhere that was near this size.”

The store includes a spacious upstairs seating area that can be rented out for events, and has already become a popular place for certain crowds. “We’ve rented it out for parties and showers—we’ve done more showers here than anything else,” he said. “But it can also just be a hangout. We have some churches and youth groups use it for bible studies.”

Sugar Llamas in Sapulpa took a risk in being the only restaurant space (so far) to open on Hobson Avenue

as it started development. Chad says the first year “had it’s peaks and valleys,” but some of the peaks— like the Route 66 Christmas Chute—were better than expected.

“The Christmas Chute was phenomenal,” he said. “Our biggest fear was that we’re not on the Christmas Chute street. So being an offshoot down one of the new alleys was definitely concerning. How do we get the people to see us here?”

But through some creative guerrilla marketing and beating the street, they were able to turn Sapulpa’s most popular new event into a slam dunk for sales. “At one point literally the line went from the register all the way to the back stairs. And everybody was waited on and they were out the door within 10 minutes. We definitely had a good end of November, beginning of December. The whole Chute process was just phenomenal.”

Chad says to any other business looking to come to town, “Research, research, research. Ask lots of questions, get lots of different answers, and make the best educated guess you can,” he says. “The Chamber was my very first contact, and they can direct you to the people that are in the know with the city. Especially if you’re coming in and putting your own money down, you’ll want to know what you don’t know.”

Why Sapulpa?

Joni Rogers-Kante moved from Sapulpa to California in 9th grade, where she eventually started the global makeup empire that became known as SeneGence International. But she says she knew for a long time that she wanted to move back to Sapulpa.

“I started thinking about it and planning for it in 2017, planning for it in 2019, and then COVID hit,” she said.

In 2017, word got out that a mysterious buyer had purchased three buildings downtown on Dewey Avenue. For many, it was the first time they’d heard about SeneGence or Joni Rogers-Kante. Over time, the Kante Group purchased and renovated numerous other properties, including the Burnett Mansion, the Old City Hall and the Tee Pee Drive-In.

She said it was her husband Ben’s idea to start buying the buildings, and from the beginning, they worked strategically to keep it in step with what the city was already planning, especially as those plans began to take shape after the city passed a $40 million General Obligation bond in 2020.

“That was his plan,” Joni said. “He said ‘we have to put commerce on the bottom, and offices at the top.’ And we believed the first buildings to be complete should be the ones touching the alley.”

The Phase One and Phase Two Alleyway Projects were among the first to be completed from the 2020 GO Bond. Kante Group’s businesses like The Crossroads Cookery, the SStyle Boutique and

their AirBnb in the Old City Hall on Dewey Street all connect to those alleys.

“With every improvement in the city, we are that much closer to making the kind of impact in the community that we set out to do,” Joni said.

No project has been more impactful than the purchase and restoration of the Tee Pee Drive-In. Since it reopened in 2023, it has drawn the attention of everyone from Route 66 enthusiasts to families eager to relive the days of the open-air drive-in theater experience. Joni says it’s one of her favorites. “It’s a great service to the community,” she said. “It’s more like a family park than a movie theater, so there’s more upkeep. But that’s one we do for the community.”

Another surprising addition to Sapulpa by the Kante Group is the Waypoint Lounge, a unique paradise for every kind of gamer, from console to PC to tabletop. The Asian-fusion-style kitchen and bar space, combined with giant screens have also made it a great venue for watching sporting events. Joni says the concept was one they came up with as they began to investigate what Sapulpa was missing.

“As we were gathering data on traffic flow, we saw a need for a young-adult-friendly, modern and relevant activity space,” Joni said. “Anyone ages 10 to 40—a social space that would engage a younger generation.” They originally began to build such a space in a property they’d purchased on South Park Street but realized the space wasn’t big enough for

16 | Why Sapulpa?
Joni Rogers-Kante Family

what they wanted to do, which led them to buying the old Kennedy Used Cars dealership on North Main.

Today, the venue draws in visitors from all around the world as they come to participate in gaming tournaments or make their way through Sapulpa on Route 66.

Joni says future plans include finishing the buildings they started with—the same ones they purchased back in 2017. “We haven’t started with the Kress and Berryhill buildings,” she said. “The hotel (another property Kante Group has on North Water Street) has three floors that have to be retrofitted and designed.

If these projects weren’t enough to keep the Kantes in Sapulpa, Joni insisted that they now call Sapulpa home. “We love the town,” adding that Ben Kante says that’s his hometown now, as does their son, Allen. “Allen has no desire to move back to California,” she says.

“How great it is to live in a community where people know each other and are kind to each other,” she says. “That’s probably the most important thing we’re doing, is creating a community that our kids want to come back to.”

A Brighter Future

Less than ten years ago, downtown Sapulpa was a place caught between two phases of life.

The thriving activity of a bustling downtown in the 1990s was all but gone as local boutiques gave way to the rise of online shopping and big box stores. Many of the buildings and storefronts sat vacant or nearly so, and what little retail was there struggled to generate the business needed to end the year in the black.

The telltale signs that Sapulpa had once been a vibrant community were still there, but the majority of the building owners and entrepreneurs that had erected those signs and kept them lit for so long were retiring or passing away, and it seemed like the next generation wasn’t able or willing to carry the torch into the future.

As surrounding communities progressed and gained new attractions, attention and revenue, it seemed like Sapulpa was stuck in a limbo between the romantic memories of what had once been, and the possibilities of what it could become for the next generation.

Thankfully, a combination of loyal citizens, bootstrapping business owners and a visionary leadership team at City Hall refused to let the spark that had ignited Sapulpa’s success be snuffed out.

Was it possible, they wondered, for a small town like ours, with its proximity to a larger metropolitan area, to gather the loyalty needed to become a more independent city? Or was Sapulpa doomed to remain little more what we had become over the last thirty years—just a bedroom community to Tulsa?

A meeting of the minds began, and a thoughtful process was orchestrated to gather the ideas of the people who lived and worked in Sapulpa. Through a series of large, community-minded events, a vision began to take shape. A few things became abundantly clear: Sapulpa needed more. More nightlife, more green spaces, more pedestrian-friendly places, and more office space. We needed more reasons for locals and visitors alike to stop, more reasons to shop, and more reasons to stay. After a year of strategic conversations, a master plan was presented to the community. Included were six propositions that offered to fundamentally alter the way Sapulpa was viewed as a community for families, for tourists, and for a working populace.

18 | A Brighter Future

A Brighter Future

In 2020, Sapulpa passed a $40 million General Obligation bond in a solid vote of confidence in that new vision. The six proposals in the bond provided the plans to not only bring in the fresh ideas that the community had vocally requested, but the means to support a growing population of families, employees, business owners, and tourists.

Even as COVID-19 brought about an abrupt halt— and then slow restart—to the progress, as of now, Sapulpa has more than half the projects completed. These projects include a new fire station, upgrades to several playgrounds and parks, new equipment, vehicles and infrastructure for our police department, and the disbursement of funding to bring about economic development to Sapulpa.

As of 2024, the most recognizable changes include the Phase One and Two Alleyway Projects, which are nearing completion. The new Herald Square park— technically part of the Phase Two Alleyway Project, has already become a standout feature in the community as it hosts the local farmers market, live music events, and even a fashion show. The now-iconic 74066 photo op has drawn in residents

and tourists alike, all of whom want to snap their photo at the heart of Route 66.

You can’t talk about the new shine on downtown Sapulpa without mentioning Sapulpa Main Street. For decades, the organization has worked hard to share the value of its historic downtown with locals and tourists through grants to help restore some of our buildings to their former glory. Before the 2020 GO Bond, it was Sapulpa Main Street that first began campaigning to remove the metal facades that were the fad of the 1950s and 60s. Many of those stores closed a long time ago, but the metal storefronts remained until recently. Diligently working with the state’s Main Street organization, Cindy Lawrence and her board at Sapulpa Main Street began providing grants to the building owners who wanted to show off their history. Through cooperation and community action, they have gone to great lengths to ensure everyone that Sapulpa is headed in a new direction; from being another statistic of a bygone era to embracing its qualities as a charming but progressive city that can move forward into an exciting future.

Sapulpa’s Parks

Activities for all ages, abilities and interests

Sapulpa may be classified as a mid-size community, but it has big city recreational opportunities and activities for citizens and visitors of all ages—even the four-legged kind.

For example, under the category of true inclusiveness, Sapulpa boasts of “Wiggly Field.” A Dog Park in centrally-located Kelly Lane Park. In regard to being open to all, Liberty Park is the home of Sapulpa’s inclusive playground that includes solid safety surfacing and ramp access, inclusive swings, sensory equipment, and areas for specific age groups.

For a myriad of activities, Kelly Lane is also Sapulpa’s flagship destination with fishing in its pond, disc golf, outdoor fitness equipment, and even an escape from the urban environment into the woods right in the middle of town. Another popular feature allows parents to easily watch their children while they enjoy playground equipment and the skatepark.

For those seeking more vigorous activities, visit Liberty Park with sand volleyball, a half-mile paved walking trail, and lighted courts for basketball,

tennis and the new recreational rage: pickleball. If all these summertime pursuits warm you up, cool off at the Sapulpa Aquatic Center. Open from Memorial Day weekend to early August, the Aquatic Center has a zero entry with a large shallow area, slides and spray fountains. It can also be rented for private events.

Other parks and their claims to park and recreation fame include:

qq Heritage Park- which was designed by Sapulpa elementary students and built by community volunteers.

qq Davis Park- which invites children to do a little creek stompin’.

qq Hollier Park- the site of the best views in Creek County for quiet contemplation.

qq Bartlett Youth Sports Complex- that hosts baseball and soccer events.

qq Booker T. Washington Recreational Center and Sapulpa Senior Citizen Community Centerwhich have indoor facilities.

But there’s more: for the true outdoor enthusiast visits to Lake Sahoma and Pretty Water, only ten minutes from downtown, are a must. Pretty Water is stocked by Sapulpa Parks with trout in the winter, and catfish in the summer. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife stocks Lake Sahoma with a variety of fish. Anglers land from bass to crappie, and catfish to perch, with the right “hook, line and sinker”, or lure.

Lake Sahoma also offers RV and tent camping, an indoor heated fishing dock and easy access for fishing boats, kayaks and canoes. The Lake Sahoma Bait Shop is stocked with lures, minnows and snacks for a day at the lake. City and state fishing licenses are required for both Sahoma and Pretty Water.

Ready for more activity? Don’t miss the Rock Creek Golf Course—a challenging but friendly track. Call the pro shop for tee times and more information, (918) 224-0237.

Sapulpa is also proud of the Salvation Army Community Center on South Hickory. This major community asset includes a weight room, walking track, indoor pool, basketball court and a general recreational room, as well as church services.

There’s no reason to be a couch potato in Sapulpa with all of its big city parks and recreational opportunities.

What Sapulpa has that you won’t find in most towns our size

Sapulpa is a statistical anomaly. Though the town is finally growing again after decades of stagnation, the town’s population of roughly 22,000 is still considered small when compared to other towns to the north and east. Nevertheless, Sapulpa retains some amenities and features that outshine towns several times our size. Here are just a few examples:

Sapulpa went from zero coffee shops to four in the span of a few years. For the longest time, the best you could hope for in coffee from Sapulpa had to come from a restaurant at breakfast or a gas station. A proper coffee shop was something that many in Sapulpa longed for but never got to experience, even while they watched other communities seemingly gain a new one every year.

Finally, a Texas native whose family had moved to nearby Tulsa, recognized the need and gave Sapulpa its first coffee shop in more than five years. Seven years later, CTX Coffee (114 E. Dewey Ave.) is still going strong, blazing a trail for more coffee shops to follow, including Buffalo Beverage Co. (1315 N. 9th St.), Crossroads Cookery (117 E. Dewey Ave.), and most recently, Sugar Llama’s (119 E. Hobson), which opened in 2023.

After decades with a single ice cream provider, Sapulpa now has four of those, too. Similar to the

coffee shop story, Sapulpa now boasts a variety of ice cream shops after decades of just one ice cream option. The well-known chain of Braum’s Ice Cream stores has provided ice cream, dairy products and burgers to Sapulpa residents for years. Aside from one short-lived ice cream stand in the early 2000’s, there was never another option for independent ice cream until 2022. This is when the Crossroads Cookery began providing—aside from its fine dining experience—the closest thing Sapulpa had to an old-fashioned ice cream parlor since the days of a drug store on every corner.

The opening of the Cookery not only brought another much-needed restaurant to downtown Sapulpa, it helped pave the way for even more ice creameries to set up shop. Sapulpa welcomed Sugar Llama’s and then Little Taiyaki (24 E. Dewey Ave.), which also became Sapulpa’s first option for their now-popular açai bowls, a healthy icecream alternative.

Most towns our size don’t have a theater. Sapulpa technically has three. Most people over the age of 35 will remember having to drive to Sand Springs or Tulsa to see a movie. When the Sapulpa Cinema 8 (10141 OK-66) opened in the early 2000s, it enjoyed weekends of packed screens and parking lots, even as other theaters in Tulsa and nearby Sand Springs eventually closed. As if that wasn’t good enough, Sapulpa can now boast the return of it’s Route 66 iconic Tee Pee Drive-In (13166 W Ozark Trail), which has entered its second season in full swing, bringing in the young and old alike to enjoy everything from the latest releases to new showings of old classics.

Aside from the Tee Pee and the indoor theater, Sapulpa is proud to have the Sapulpa Community Theatre (124 S Water St), which has been providing live, family-friendly shows since 1990. Usually hosting four shows a year, SCT has become a popular event for the last several years, often selling out their performances as their reputation for clean, hilarious and heartwarming shows continues to grow.

A Place to Call Home

According to US Census figures, Sapulpa’s population of 21,195 live with 2.61 people per household. That’s family living and that means a variety of homes and lifestyle choices within its borders.

As a suburb of Tulsa, Sapulpa can provide a wide range of affordable living opportunities while still being conveniently located in the Tulsa Metroplex. The historic downtown corridor offers homes from the time of Oklahoma’s oil boom as well as the post-war housing boom of the 1950s.

Moving toward the south end of town, homebuyers find more modern housing additions with a variety of homes and lot sizes. Spacious modern neighborhoods have been developed with new homes featuring many of the modern amenities that new construction offers. Sapulpa also offers the opportunity for farm and ranch living with areas from 10 to 100 acres in the area;

all just minutes from Sapulpa’s many restaurants, parks and shops.

Sapulpa’s housing market is enjoying the growth that the housing boom has brought with new developments in a variety of housing styles. It is easy to find a home that meets a variety of individual and family needs at a remarkably good value.

Indeed, historic mansions built by oil barons in the wake of the Glenn Pool discovery and the subsequent boom (including a home designed by renowned architect Bruce Goff) are among Sapulpa’s magnificently preserved and refurbished homes. From the latest in home building and technology, Smart Homes in new additions, as well as beautifully maintained homes in treelined traditional additions surrounding Sapulpa, not to mention cozy cottages found throughout the community. The choices are bountiful and affordable.

Getting Chieftain Stronger:

Sapulpa Passes Largest School Bond Ever

Sapulpa is getting popular.

Thanks to the influx of new businesses, the increasing presence of a new nightlife experience, and the mind-blowing popularity of the Route 66 Christmas Chute, people who previously couldn’t find Sapulpa on a map are now making regular trips to see what the former Oil City of the Southwest has to offer.

With that growing attention comes the need to make changes in an area that has remained largely the same for what some would consider too long— the high school.

In September of 2023, Sapulpa voters passed the largest school bond the city had ever seen—a whopping $279 million to be used in four major areas, including a brand new high school, a performing arts center, an exciting new educational pathways program, and updates and additions to some of our athletics facilities.

The New High School

mmm

The new Sapulpa High School campus will be a highlight on Route 66 as a major development at the corner of Mission Street and Dewey Avenue. The exterior design reflects a “Main Street” experience, featuring an expansive community plaza along Mission Street to welcome visitors, artists, and vendors.

The redesigned high school will have heightened security systems and layers of protection built into the entire campus, along with a reduced number of entry points, improved security technologies, and a FEMA-rated storm shelter to accommodate the entire campus population.

Many residents will be pleased to see the high school remain on the same campus that has been its home since being built more than six decades ago. Heather Browne, Communications Director for the district, says the decision was a direct result of the community feedback. “We learned Sapulpans support the current location for its traditional presence in the heart of the city,” she said.

The Performing Arts Center

While the existing Shaw Auditorium has served the school well through decades of assemblies, musicals, recitals, competitions, and more, it’s always been inhibited in its ability to bring the best experience in sound and theater to Sapulpa.

Sapulpa High School vocal music director Gina Myers says the current space limits the production options because “there is virtually no backstage area. There are many musicals that we just cannot consider doing because of the lack of space,” she says.

As part of the 2023 Chieftain Stronger school bond proposal, the new Performing Arts Center will have no such limitations. Working designs include more than 1,000 seats with a balcony, additional backstage space, and larger flyspace that will allow for more complex productions. An orchestra pit will bring the best in live musical performances.

“A new Performing Arts Center would be a game-changer for Sapulpa students, as well as the Sapulpa community,” Myers says.

Speech, Debate, and Theatre teacher Rebecca Braswell says more space is sorely needed for the school to continue to produce shows that prepare students for a big production, including technical mmm

theatre—something that Braswell says they’re not able to adequately teach in their current facility.

“It will also open up opportunities for us to do shows that are too big for our current facility,” Braswell says. “There will be room to build sets and props and to store the things we have and make. There should also be plenty of storage added for costumes, props, and supplies that come with putting on shows.”

Braswell says she’s looking forward to seeing what can happen with all of the performing artists under the same roof. “I imagine that could open up opportunities for some creative collaboration between all of our departments!”

Educational Pathways

mmm

As of 2019, all ninth-graders in Oklahoma must complete an Individualized Career Academic Plan (ICAP) in order to graduate, and they have to update their ICAPs every year. The purpose is to put students on a path to preparedness for the adult world, and a plan to get them there, with literal goals and milestones along the way.

Mindy Englett, the Educational Pathways Director for Sapulpa Public Schools, says the ICAP program is already in full swing at the district, as each student and their counselors work out an intentional sequence of courses that put the students on a path to progress towards certain post-secondary education goals, whether it be college, Central Tech, the military or anything else.

“We considered how we could make the most of this chance to give all Sapulpa students greater support for job exploration and the learning opportunities necessary to help them pursue those careers after graduation,” Englett said. “This led to the development of the Educational Pathways program.”

Educational Pathways enable the student to learn career expertise by way of courses in school, internships and more. The school designs broad paths geared toward specific career clusters that feature a lot of intersecting subpathways. Some of the paths may lead to a college degree, while others may lead to a technical certificate, and still others may result in a portfolio of work assembled to show a potential employer. Englett says the program is a chance to develop the workforce of the future all while continuing and maintaining high school course requirements. “The Pathways program is in place to enhance learning and give students a path to success after graduation by exploring careers now,” she says.

Superintendent Rob Armstrong touted the new bond package as “comprehensive.”

“It includes district-wide upgrades, new and improved athletic facilities, replacement of the entire transportation fleet, in addition to a new high school and a performing arts center,” he said. “It’s no secret that great schools, and top-notch school facilities, generate community growth. We want our facilities to mirror the wonderful things going on in our classrooms.”

Higher Education

Sapulpa residents are only minutes away from college classes on the West Campus of Tulsa Community College (TCC). Located on 51st Street off Highway 97, TCC’s West Campus is an integral part of the state’s largest community college—offering a variety of shortterm programs, certificates, and associate degrees. Many students begin their college careers at TCC with a goal of transferring to a four-year program. In addition to the West Campus, TCC has complementary facilities in northeast, downtown and southeast Tulsa, as well as in Jenks.

Four-year opportunities leading to Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are close at hand on Tulsa campuses of Oklahoma State University, the University of Oklahoma, and Langston University. In addition, two nationally recognized private institutions are nearby: the University of Tulsa in mid-town Tulsa, and Oral Roberts University in south Tulsa.
