LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 2020 COMPLETION

T

he Moffett Library contracting team is bringing back hope to the librarians and students by being two weeks ahead of the set schedule. According to Clara Latham, the university librarian for 30 years, the construction progress is actually ahead of the projected time by two weeks.

“This is a more complicated project unlike others on campus because we’re trying to live here while they are working... It has been tough for everyone because access to some books are limited or completely unavailable,” Latham said.

the rain, but Latham said that the library will in fact be finishing on time, if not, early.

“They worked on Christmas break with the bad weather...even worked on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Our current elevator that they were using stopped working, so it’s been tough for the workers,” Latham said.

Lexis Brickhouse, marketing junior, said she hopes the construction is finished soon because she really misses the study rooms.

“Before the construction I liked to study in the study rooms on the second floor. They’re nice to work in. I can concentrate and actually get assignments done. Ever since the construction I haven’t gone much because I don’t like studying on the first floor,” Brickhouse

Brickhouse said she couldn’t really tell how much had gotten done. She doesn’t ever really see it advertised.

“I do most of my studying and homework at home now. There are way more distractions at the study places they have set up for us, so I have definitely been more lazy since the library has been under construction,” Brickhouse said.

Douglas Moss, architect, said he is also excited about how the renovation process is coming along. He said that the project has run very smoothly so far, and with the help of all of the MSU staff, the contractors are determined to finish right on time in April 2020.

“By the beginning of the fall 2019 semester the third floor and the west portion of the second floor will be finished and ready for use. The completion of this phase will include a new computer lab, renovated and new group study rooms, a new elevator, new lighting, additional electrical outlets, improved wifi, new furniture and new interior finishes. Your new library is going to be an exciting, transformed space. I can’t wait for you to see it completed.” Moss said.

The cost of all of the renovations are $7.49 million and includes new tables, chairs, restrooms, plumbing and a new wheelchair accessible elevator. The project is scheduled to be completed in April 2020.

Why the question of the week is important OUR VIEW: The Wichitan staff believes that students have a voice that needs to be heard. We also believe that they should be given an outlet to use that voice in a productive manner.

We believe in freedom of speech and strive to be first, fair, unbiased and accurate. With this in mind, we want to include students in our efforts to do just that.

This series is geared towards the students and written so that they can have a chance to be heard campus-wide through the use of our publication.

The question of the week is an important tool to reach the students and interact in ways that articles can’t. With asking a question every week, we strike up conversations amongst students and gain more readership.

We at the Wichitan care about our readers and want to hear what they feel about enough to set out and gather information from random individuals.With creating these conversations, students are able to be challenged to think on a higher level.

This is important on a number of levels because it also helps prepare students for job interviews and helps others see their views and intelligence.

We hope that the Question of The Week can be used as a learning tool for all students and can continue for many years to come.

A little spice makes everything nice This weekend I was craving Mexican food so I decided to visit a place a coworker suggested, El Ñorteno.

We walked in and it seemed so homey.

Small tables and booths, really family oriented. There were a few beer signs and things on the wall, but nothing that screamed commercial or chain restaurant. We seated ourselves Aquila and a waiter came and gave us a menu and took Freeney our drink orders. He brought back the biggest restaurant sized cup I’d ever seen and was I happy because I was super parched. I perused the menu for a bit and knew what I wanted as soon as I saw “gordita plate,” but I kept looking and saw that tostadas were a menu item and I couldn’t decide, so I ended up getting the steak gordita meal with one chicken tostada; while my friend chose the barbacoa supreme burrito.

A lady came to our table with two containers of salsa and some chips while we waited. It looked like it was a house salsa, dark green, and the chips looked like they were made in-house too. I took a chip and did a dip taste (I just dipped the tip of the chip into the salsa to taste it) and almost instantly, my entire mouth melted. The salsa was so spicy but it was too good for me to even care so I dipped more chips and kept eating until my food arrived.

Maybe 20-25 minutes had passed and all of our food arrived. My friend had the biggest burrito I’d ever seen, it filled the entire plate. It could easily be compared to the size of a newborn child. My gordita meal came with rice and refried beans and “toppings” (pico de gallo, onions and lettuce) on the side and my tostada was topped with shredded chicken, tomatoes, cheese, and shredded lettuce.

I grabbed a piece of steak out of one of my gorditas and was extremely pleased. I’ve had good steak before, but this was premium, top notch, gordita-quality steak. Then I tore a piece of bread to taste it and that was good too. The refried beans and rice were good as well. Before I started actually eating the full meal, I decided to take a bite of my tostada. I was a tad bit disappointed because my shredded chicken was a little dry, but it was nothing a little Valentina Salsa Picante hot sauce couldn’t fix.

I made sure to use some of their spicy green salsa on one of my gorditas and it was amazing without the pico and things, and the burrito was perfect, large and in charge. My chicken needed a boost but was still good and I got so full that I had leftovers that I ate for lunch today and it’s safe to say that even day old El Ñorteno is still good as ever.

I found out that there is an El Ñorteno 2 somewhere close so a visit there sometime soon is a must.

‘The Favourite’ is an unforgettable treat T

he war is on in France, but the duck races continue… at least in Queen Anne’s court, the setting for Yorgos Lanthimos’s newest absurdist masterpiece “The Favourite.”

Set in the early 1700s, “The Favourite” revolves around the deeply unbalanced Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) and two fiercely competitive women vying for her favor: her childhood best Brian friend and lover Lady Sarah, Duchess of MarlLang borough (Rachel Weisz) and Sarah’s powerhungry cousin Abigal Masham (Emma Stone).

This power struggle love-triangle is only the beginning of a busy plot of rendezvous and betrayals, scheming and slandering all in hopes of gaining the pliable Queen’s ear, hoping for a prize of enormous wealth and stature. The historical accuracy of this tale is dubious, the premise gleaned from a passing fact in a history book, but Lanthimos has breathed a zany new life into it, duck races and all.

The absurdity of “The Favourite” is all part of the fun and makes a supreme setting for three talented actresses to show their stuff. Colman, due to play a much more regal Queen Elizabeth II on “The Crown” this year, dives headfirst into her queenly role. She sobs on the floor, yells at footmen and faints in Parliament, all the while being molded and played by her courtesans. She revels in playing this weak and hilarious character but is always sure to stop just shy of going too far with the part, leaving a shred of humanity, and deserved sympathy, for the pathetic queen.

Meanwhile, Anne’s ladies-in-waiting are competing for her affection and the vast power it affords. Weisz’s Lady Sarah is too confident for her own good as she fights against her scrap-

py cousin Abigal, underestimating the lengths she’ll go to gain prestige. Lady Sarah expects to fight with the Parliament members, but it’s the ladies-in-waiting that are the most dangerous in this court.

Stone transforms herself from her Oscar-winning role in “La La Land” to a much more cynical and vicious character.

Her ingenue facade sloughs off quickly as her character becomes more and more unlikable, but Stone’s stellar performance is unwavering.

The real sheen of “The Favourite,” however, is when these three actresses get together, creating scenes and moments that are unrivaled on the silver screen. Their antics are overblown and their plotting is constant and wily. Surrounded by deception, Queen Anne is unaware of the mayhem in her court allowing her to be the most honest and strangely, relatable character in the film.

While all of this may sound like it could be just another costume drama, the spark comes from Lanthimos’s absurdist style. Bulging shots and sharp camera angles appear periodically, jarring the audience from their complacency, constantly keeping them off-kilter. It is a harsh reminder of the topsy-turvy world of Queen Anne’s Court and it keeps the audience just as far off balance as the Queen herself.

“The Favourite” is a film that is hard to recommend. Its absurdity and adult content might be too much for many audience members, but for those willing to step out of their comfort zone, “The Favourite” is a rare and unforgettable treat.

“The Favourite” has been nominated for 10 Academy Awards this year, including best picture, best actress and supporting actress and best director.

As of Jan. 31, Marilyn Fowlé has retired from her position as the university’s vice president for administration and finance.

During her seven years of employment with the university, Fowlé helped to shape the campus master plan as well as the long-term financial-planning.

“It was good to have her [Fowlé] here. She was very open and very student-oriented. She had a lot of background in financing, so there’s a lot of buildings, walkways and parking lots that she really put her stamp on,” Valarie Maxwell, director of budget and management, said.

Starting Feb. 1, Maxwell will serve as the interim vice president and take on the daily responsibilities of the office until a permanent replacement is hired. Maxwell will continue to prepare the budget for the 2020 school year as well.

“We have a budget oversight committee and we have already begun that process. In January, we had hearings where the academic departments and other departments brought forth requests. So beginning next week we’ll start working with that budget oversight committee and start going through and developing what we need for 2020,” Maxwell said.

Maxwell provided more insight on the university’s budget and the process that the budget oversight committee must undergo to get it approved.

“The university’s budget is a little over $120 million, and it is partially funded by the state legislature. So we get some of the money from them, of course the rest comes from student tuition and fees and other general revenues from here. All of that gets compiled and we won’t actually put together the budget and present it to the board of reagents until August,” Maxwell said.

The search for a new vice president for administration and finance began last fall. A search coordinated by Debbie Barrow, director of board and government relations, is working with Association of Governing Boards Search to help with applicant recruitment.

The search committee has already begun reviewing applications for the position, with the goal of beginning interviews in early March.

ambian born, MamGoree Sock is a mechanical engineering senior and computational science and math mi-

nor.

With only one semester left Sock is balancing one of his busiest schedule yet.

“I use my weekends to catch up on homework and I use Sunday to plan my week,” he said. “Mondays and Wednesdays are all full of classes, and I do any work to prepare for lectures in between. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays are mostly spent at Tranter where I do my internship. I go to work at 7:30 a.m. and have to be on campus for class by 10 a.m. which is until 12:20 p.m. Then by 1 p.m. I am back to work until 5 p.m. Doing senior design work takes up almost all the free time in my week because its a consistent thing but our group meets on Wednesdays. Every third Wednesday we have National Society of Black Engineers general meetings and the executive meeting happen as needed.”

Sock is working on his senior design project along with four other students and the help of their mentors. The first time project is a mobile wireless surveillance system with unpredictable motion.

“What we are working on is a surveillance system that you can mount on a rail, the difference between this and other surveillance

systems that exist is that it can traverse or move across a wall and the key feature that makes it unique is the movement of the machine or camera is unpredictable,” Sock said.

“You don’t know where it’s going to stand or stop because it’s meant to move continuously in a random motion. This was influenced by the double pendulum motion. It’s a very unique project we are working very hard on it and we’re actually trying to get it patented by the school.”

The finished product will be presented at the Enhancing Undergraduate Research Endeavors and Creative Activities and North Texas Area Student Conference.

Sock also serves as president of the Midwestern Chapter of the NSBE, and recently began an internship with a Tranter. In branching out Sock said from what he has learn as a student, the work environment in his field is very different from what we learn in school.

“The pressure there is different, it’s more of self responsibility. So you say to yourself, ‘I’m working for a company that expects x, y, and z and I have to deliver, even if my boss is not watching over me.’ So it’s different as opposed to when professors set deadlines for you.”

His continued exposure and packed schedule has given him an appreciation for prioritization especially where his schoolwork is concerned.

“I prioritize things that are more involv-

ing so say for instance, I have like a one page paper that is due on Monday, obviously if I have any assignments due on Thursday I’d spend more time doing the paper than the assignments because its all about what’s coming next for me. I don’t really have enough wiggle room to do assignments ahead of time.

But I try to do them at least two days before they are due. One of the best things I try to do though is to listen in class, that’s the best way for me to absorb information so I focus in class as much as I can. That way I don’t have to go back and read a lot and I’d be like, ‘oh I remember this.’”

Sock said that communication is key in his work environment.

“One of the biggest things I am working on right now is effectively communicating with people by not wasting time making sure I get the necessary information is communicated and get the information I need. I probably communicate with at least 50 different people throughout the week because I have a group chat for NSBE, for senior design, I also have a basketball group, and then I have to talk to my family and friends.”

Sock says that playing basketball is one of the few things that helps him de-stress and recharge.

“Sometimes I get overwhelmed and I just want to go home and sleep. Sometimes I just go home and crash and there’s nothing else

I can do because my brain is worn out and I feel so tired from juggling so many tasks that I have no room for anything else but sleep. But that’s where basketball comes in. Right now, I’m playing in the campus intramural tournament so every Tuesday and Thursday we have games. I also play in the city Wichita Falls city league on Thursday. I get a lot of rest and try to eat healthy too. I don’t know how but I’m doing it subconsciously because I know I have to take care of my body.”

Sock said his mother is the source of his motivation.

“Every time I talk to her she encourages me and when I’m stressed out I reach out to her and let her know or I just vent. She’s always giving me words of encouragement so that keeps me going and pushes me. She’s definitely my fuel.”

Sock is looking forward to the opportunities that lay ahead.

One of the biggest things I’m looking forward to is going to the NSBE national conference to see what opportunities are there for me... So I’m interested in getting one last internship this summer in order to secure a full time job where I can gain some experience. If I don’t get any opportunities there then I will stay with the company that I work with and see what my future holds there.

Greek life strolls into Black History Month RANDI HEATON REPORTER

R

uby Arriaga, coordinator of student activities, was planning events for Black History Month that happened to overlap with Cultural Greek Council recruitment week.

She decided to combine them together to showcase both events.

“The students come to fellowship together and learn about the Cultural Greek Council and finding out more about the organizations,” Arriaga said.

Vice President of Delta Sigma Theta Jada Propes, political science senior, helped put the event together for everyone and is planning other upcoming events in celebration of Black History Month.

“The culturally based organization involved have a rich history behind them and we want to be able to showcase what we do to anyone interested in joining,” Propes said.

The sororities and fraternities began to stroll, chant, and dance while representing and promoting their organization.

Nursing sophomore Carolina Beltran of Sigma Lambda Alpha was among the people strolling at this event. She said she wanted to be able to display the strong bond of sisterhood while having a good time.

Beltran said, “We are trying to show potential members what we [sororities] are all about and what we do. The dancing, strolling, and seeing all the other sororities and fraternities really makes you feel like you are a part of something.”

Cinema Club gathers on Feb. 6 MICAH WILSON REPORTER

The Cinema Club is having its second meeting of the year in Prothro – Yeager Room 204 on Feb. 6.

Desireé Harris, biology sophomore and president of the club said, “If you want to relax and have a good time, come and watch a movie with us.”

The Cinema Club meets on a biweekly basis and costs $5 per semester to become an official member. The money generated from member dues is used toward snacks or potential campus wide events. The club has grown from being just Harris and her four friends to more than 30 enrolled as paying members.

Jonathon Quam, mass communication assistant professor and Cinema Club adviser said he has enjoyed aiding and counseling the group throughout its progression.

“I’ve wanted to see a Cinema Club on campus since I started here, or rather a functioning, successful one. That’s why when

it was brought to me with the opportunity to advise a new one, I jumped at it,” Quam said.

He said he firmly believes the club offers an educational value that is beneficial to our society.

Quam said, “There’s an inherent knowledge value. I firmly believe that we need to understand visual language and media language in everything that we take in. This is just another way to learn how to interpret different style of storytelling and film making and to understand visual language and the role it plays in our lives on a daily basis.”

During club meetings, members both view a film and discuss it.

Quam said, “Once the semester is in full swing, it will usually consist of a discussion of the previous film we watched.

Sometimes we will bring in a guest speaker, someone to speak to the themes and stories within the previous film. After that first half hour, they will move into watching a film that is an hour and a half to two hours.”

he Black Student Union is holding their sixth annual talent show allowing students to showcase their abilities, including, dancing, singing, and reading poetry.

Tre’Vonne Bradford, president of BSU and exercise physiology senior said,“Talent is a creative art. Are you able to sing, dance, or just create anything that a peer may take interest in? Are you able to capture a crowd with your presence? That’s talent to me!”

The BSU talent show gives students a platform to broadcast their talents, and creatively express themselves without judgement.

“The talent show allows students to express themselves and talents while helping build the confidence to showcase those talents,” said Bradford.

Not only do BSU members have confidence that students participating will benefit from this experience, the students attending will benefit as well.

Jamilah Kangudja, parliamentarian of BSU and exercise physiology junior said, “This event benefits both the crowd and participants by giving the participants a platform and the crowd a chance to be a witness to others hidden talents.”

BSU members believe students who participate in the talent show auditions, regardless if they continue on to the final round, will gain confidence and conquer fears, while achieving the ability to connect with other students outside of their typical friend group.

“I expect students to gain confidence and conquer the fear of stage fright while also providing exposure for their talents,” Bradford said.

Lil’e Ates, executive member of BSU and psychology junior said, “It’s always a great opportunity for students on campus to be able to show what talents they have because they may not get another opportunity due to school or busy schedules.”

Outside of gaining experience and conquering fears, BSU works together as a collective to ensure students enjoy themselves at the talent show onstage and offstage.

“For the audience, we try to involve them as much as possible and hype them up between contestants,” said Ates “As long as everyone gets to enjoy themselves, our organization has done its job. We’re all about creating a positive atmosphere for everyone while educating.”

Since 2014, this organization has been dedicated to empowering students from different backgrounds and cultures.

MustanGO delivers Starbucks on campus JUSTIN GARNER REPORTER

M

ustanGO entered its “beta” phase, with the coffee shop in Moffett Library now offering a delivery service to faculty and staff, for flex dollars.

Manny Bhogal, Chartwells marketing specialist, is the brainchild behind MustanGo. “I was initially tasked with increasing the revenue at Starbucks,” Bhogal said. “I came up with the delivery idea because I was once a student here. It’s also much more personable to have someone from the school delivering to you, and there’s less of a chance of your food being cold, because the person making the deliveries knows exactly how to get to you.”

Bhogal said that while his expectations haven’t fully been met, he does have reason to be encouraged by the project.

“It hasn’t currently met my expectations, because I haven’t opened it up to students yet, but we have seen a small bump in flex dollars purchased by faculty,” Bhogal said.

Bhogal explained that this is all part of a long-term plan that would include delivery to students, as well as faculty and staff, from all food locations on campus.

“I am hoping it doesn’t take longer than about a year and a half to fully expand throughout the campus,” Bhogal said.

“And I am hoping to at least expand the Starbucks service to some students by mid February.”

Amber Hernandez, pre-psychology sophomore, is a Chartwells employee, who began her work with the project about two months before it started.

“I helped a little bit with the planning,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez also believes that it would be easy to expand to students, which would be mutually beneficial for Chartwells and MSU. “Since we have increased our numbers since it started, it’s definitely possible to move on and expand to students,” Hernandez said. “It could benefit the school also, and it would help students easily get their coffee fix.”

One of the most prominent users of the MustanGO service is the Assistant to the President, Betsy Tucker.

“Manny came by the Thursday before classes started to tell us about it, and we were so excited that we tried to order the next day,” Tucker said. “I believe we have used it on four occasions in the last two weeks.”

T

he halls of Akin Auditorium rang with beautiful music for 30 members of the audience in complete silence from four award-winning saxophone players — the Seyon Quartet.

Andrew J. Allen, assistant professor of music, woodwinds, got a call from an old friend and invited them to come to play for the community and the students.

“The baritone saxophone of the group, Kristen Zelenak and I go back many years. We both studied [at] Central Michigan University and we were in [saxophone] quartet together. She’s an excellent musician and I heard her quartet was very active and wanting to put on a tour in Texas, so she contacted me, so I said, ‘Of course, you can come in. I would love you to come to play for Midwestern community and for my students,’” Allen said.

Midwestern students gave a variety of reasons for attending the Jan. 30 event.

“A class assignment for the class of introduction to music appreciation,” Kellan Przilas, psychology senior, said.

Przilas and other students who attended the Guest Artist Recital were there to just get a class assignment out of the way.

One girl was there to hear the sweet sound of the saxophones, one song in particular.

“I am a music major who came looking forward to hearing ‘The Jig,’” Deidre Nicholes, music senior, said.

With that seats were taken and the recital began starting with a blast of loud saxophones into the first piece titled “Quatour, Op. 109 III. Final” by Alexander Glazunov. Then before “A Song for Margot” by Mark Weiser, Patrick Feher, tenor saxo-

phone player, welcomed everyone to the recital and began explaining the next piece.

“A great friend and mentor wrote this song for his wife,” Feher said.

“A Song for Margot” was written in honor of the late wife of Penn State saxophone professor David Stambler, who lost a battle with cancer.

“This piece was to celebrate her life more than to mourn it,” Feher said.

With this, the quartet began again playing a somber but gentle song. After it was finished the quartet moved right along into “Rock Formations: Obsidian” by Evan Hause. This song was supposed to represent igneous rock breaking. This was done through a very fast and rock beat.

“You can hear a little bit of rock and it’s always fun when we get to rock out a little bit,” said Feher.

Next, Feher talked about how the next two songs were special to him because they were written by a friend of his. The quartet then began playing “The Jig” by Clint Bleil and then went to intermission. When they returned to the stage they debuted a brand new song from Bleil named “Three Short Movements I. Exclamation.”

Getting close to the end the Seyon Quartet saved their favorite for second to last. Their favorite was “Prodigal child” by John Fitz Rogers.

“Between the alto and tenor, it is meant to sound like the two sons fighting over their inheritance,” Feher said.

The last song — their “a little built-in encore” Feher said — was “Capitol Punishment” by Carter Pann.

After thanking everyone for coming, the Seyon Quartet disappeared behind the curtain and everyone dispersed.

he Redwine Honors Program officials introduced new requirements that honor students must participate in, including a community service event and including an honor’s meeting each semester.

Cody Parish, honors program coordinator said, “The way we kind of visioned it was that our community will grow as we help the Wichita Falls community grow. So, it’s kind of a mutual elevation.”

The new community service requirements are to promote the bonding of honor students and have them gain more insight on upcoming honor’s events and social activities.

Parish said, “This semester we’re pushing community service a lot more and we’re pushing presentations at conferences.”

There will be at least two conferences this semester, one at the University of Texas at Tyler and one at Collin College.

Kishelle Licorish, mathematics senior, believes as honor students there should be more giving back to the community. She attended the last meeting of the fall semester where she and other honor students voted to make attending one community service event per semester a requirement in order to be a part of the Redwine Honors Program.

There were various opinions about the new requirement but many students thought that the new policy was a welcome change.

Gabby Wright, marketing freshman said, “You’re going to have to do something for a scholarship. So, I guess it’s kind of fair,” in regard to the new community service requirement.

Wright is receiving her first scholarship from the honors program this semester.

There was also a new policy added that each honor student must attend at least one meeting per semester.

Licorish said, “People need to come out to more meetings because last meeting by far was the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen. And I think it would help us as a group… to bond, to get to meet other honors members.”

Men’s Last-second 3-pointer sinks to another loss SHAROME BURTON REPORTER

J

ust fractions of a second made all the difference on Feb. 2 as men’s basketball was condemned to a heart-breaking 81-80 home defeat at the hands of Eastern New Mexico.

The men were within sight of a memorable scalp that would have stopped a four-game losing streak, but it was snatched away when ENMU guard Zach Parker nailed a threepointer with 0.7 seconds on the clock. That

shot the home side to fifth straight defeat. No other teams in the Lone Star Conference have experienced as many consecutive losses.

“That’s been the deal all season-long for us – finishing off games. We still turned the ball over a lot. A lot of it was unforced. They killed us on the glass – those were the biggest points of the game,” Haggerty said. “We did a great job guarding them for the majority of the game but they got second-chance points.”

Haggerty, into his eighth year as head coach, said he had never experienced a season

like this one but it could prove to be a teaching moment for the team.

Haggerty said. “We’ve got to learn from it and grow – we have to stay committed to what we’re doing and some of the greatest things in life happen at the darkest moments.”

Gilbert Thomas, general studies junior and center, epitomized the fighting spirit that night, registering 10 points and 11 rebounds, as well as a crucial steal and subsequent turnover in the last three seconds of the game.

“Man, there were a lot of tough plays at

the end of the game. We tried to stay together, tried to stay positive, come out here with a defensive mindset to get important stops so we could win the game,” Thomas said. “I was just thinking about how important it was for us to stay together at the end of the game and finish the big plays when they’re given to us and just take care of everything to get a victory.”

Thomas said it was important for the team to refocus its efforts on improving their 2-9 LSC record.

place we didn’t do too well,” Kizart said. “We’re a team that can compete with anybody.

We’re not a team that’s gonna get down and let anyone roll over us.”

She said maintaining their four-game winning streak was crucial at this point.

“It’s very important. The two games before this, we went down pretty hard. So just coming back in the second round of conference showing people that this is something we really want.

We want to be in the conference tournament – this is something that we really want,” Kizart said.
