MANAGER JOB APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN

JOBS CLOSING JAN 5

Part-Time Managers are MSU staff whose primary responsibility is to manage an MSU Service. PTMs are paid for anywhere between 8-16 hours per week, depending on the job, and also do some paid summer preparation before the school year begins. They train and manage their volunteers, manage the service budget, report to their supervisors, and most importantly, oversee the operation of their service as per their operating policy.

Dear potential applicant, Hello and thank you for your interest in our Part Time Manager (PTM) positions within the MSU. Each The PTM is ultimately responsible for overseeing and setting the vision for an MSU service. However, there are also common elements that can be found within the core responsibilities of a PTM that are relatively consistent across services. PTM position has its own unique challenges and areas for growth that are dependent on the specific goals of the service. All PTM’s are responsible for managing an executive team, overseeing a budget, and setting the year-long vision for the service. Part Time Managers are also responsible for all of the administrative tasks that are associated with the service. Most importantly, the PTM opportunities allow students to develop a number of soft skills that they can carry forward into their future pursuits, such as conflict resolution, stress and time management, and budgeting skills, amongst others. Diversity Services

Nishan Zewge-Abubaker, Director Role Summary: The Diversity Services Director is responsible for the creation and delivery of programming and awareness events to promote campus diversity. Furthermore, the Diversity Services Director shall serve as a resource to other staff members and campus partners with regards to diversity issues on campus. Hours: 12 hours/week (academic), variable capped (summer) Job Application Deadline: January 5, 2016 Email: diversity@msu.mcmaster.ca

The role of the Director of Diversity Services has a wide scope of responsibilities, with the opportunity to accomplish a lot within the service. The Diversity Services Director supervises two paid staff, the Assistant Director and the Bridges Coordinator, in addition to an executive and volunteer team. Campus and community relationships are a large part of the Director’s role, with them also fulfilling the role of the Student Vice-Chair for the President’s Advisory Committee to Building an Inclusive Community in addition to sitting on various committees with university and student staff. On a regular basis, the Director works to facilitate Diversity and Inclusion training for the MSU, facilitate executive meetings, coordinate promotions for events and campaigns, and maintain a close relationship with the Assistant Director to manage the service. Relevant areas of experience for the Director position include management, experience, and knowledge in anti-oppressive work. Demonstrating times where you have led a team, supported those you supervised, and practiced sensitivity through conflict resolution is a strong asset to the role. Beyond specific experiences, I think the most important aspect to highlight for the role is the ability to learn quickly, support others, and be flexible. Working as a PTM has been incredibly rewarding, and I value many aspects of the position. Connecting with campus partners is a central part of this role, and being able to carry student-centered priorities further within the university has been one of the most enjoyable parts of the role. Some of the same challenges I’ve had, however, is being able to stay connected to these partnerships and fully understand the landscape of different diversity-related issues on campus and in the community. Diversity Services is undergoing a lot of change - being able to articulate a consistent and centralized vision for this service is going to be important for the next year. My involvement with Diversity Services has been most challenging and rewarding experience of my undergraduate career, so please reach out to me if you have further questions!

Elections

Priya Gupta, Chief Returning Officer Role Summary: Respondible for execution of all MSU elections and referenda. This includes setting rules, advertising and promotion, supervision of ballot count, assessing penalties and declaring winners. Hours: 14 hours/week (academic), variable capped (summer) Job Application Deadline: January 5, 2016 Email: elections@msu.mcmaster.ca

The role of the Chief Returning Officer is to plan for and execute all MSU elections and certain external elections (such as faculty, club, etc). As CRO you can see yourself doing a lot of planning for upcoming elections, working with the DRO on promotions, meeting with Elections Committee to set rules, give fines and declare winners. The job’s time commitment gets heavier when there is an election going on but even if there isn’t an election happening, you will find yourself planning for the next election. As CRO, you will be responsible for managing your election committee members, working with the DRO and coordinating candidates during election periods. Having strong experience in working with others will definitely help you in this position. You will also be making a lot of decisions that might be unpopular among students and having some experience where you had to make rational decisions and stand behind them can definitely help someone in this role. Something I enjoy the most about my job is working closely with the DRO on planning upcoming elections. The two of us always strive to make our elections better and working together has allowed us to bounce new ideas off of each other to really make impact on how elections are run in the MSU. I also enjoy the kinds of people I get to interact with in this position. I’m constantly meeting new people and making connections with other managers in the MSU. The job can get very hectic during election periods. Candidates are constantly asking you questions, students question some of your decisions on rules and fines and it’s hard to satisfy everyone. But something I learned in this job was that no matter what decision you make, make it with integrity and stand behind it. This job will challenge you and your decisions but as long as you did it with some integrity and reason, you probably made the right decision!

MAC Bread Bin

David Cheng, Director Role Summary: The MAC Bread Bin Director is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the MAC Bread Bin. This includes distribution of food and other basic necessities to students in need of emergency assistance, food raising, and fundraising, and educating McMaster students on the causes and consequences on student hunger and the options available to students in need. Hours: 12 hours/week (September 1 - April 30), variable capped (summer) Job Application Deadline: January 5, 2016 Email: macbreadbin@msu.mcmaster.ca

Having experience in volunteering with a food bank or a food security agency is a great start because it gives you an opportunity to support vulnerable populations. However, being well-versed on the topic of food security and knowing that food insecurities also exist in countries like Canada is the number one understanding needed to pursue this role. Having knowledge in agency (i.e. political activism) will also enable you to engage with the global/local community to deliver positive impacts via Mac Bread Bin. The most challenging part of this job is operating the service while evolving a service simultaneously. It’s a tall order to re-imagine a service but committing yourself to keeping it running is very important for its growth and success. As for some personal advice, be open minded and listen more than you talk. You learn as much as you listen and I’ve taken a lot from the interactions I’ve had with so many people.. You need a open mind because sometimes working for the MSU calls for unconventional methods of accomplishing your goals. You’re a student - school’s important and everyone understands this. But, be mindful that the first priority is always time management. With good time management you’ll never need to choose between your other commitments.
