Mission

Missouri State University is a public, comprehensive university system with a mission in public affairs, whose purpose is to develop educated persons while achieving five goals: democratizing society, incubating new ideas, imagining Missouri’s future, making Missouri’s future, and modeling ethical and effective behavior. The University’s identity is distinguished by its statewide mission in public affairs, requiring a campus-wide commitment to foster competence and responsibility in the common vocation of citizenship. The academic experience is grounded in a general education curriculum which draws heavily from the liberal arts and sciences. This foundation provides the basis for mastery of disciplinary and professional studies. It also provides essential forums in which students develop the capacity to make well-informed, independent critical judgments about the cultures, values, and institutions in society. The task of developing educated persons obligates the University to expand the store of human understanding through research, scholarship and creative endeavor, and drawing from that store of understanding, to provide service to the communities that support it. In all of its programs, the University uses the most effective methods of discovering and imparting knowledge and the appropriate use of technology in support of these activities. The University functions through a multicampus system that is integrated to address the needs of its constituents.

uuConstructed in 1908 as the first campus building after the founding of Missouri State University, Carrington Hall (above) houses many of the University’s administrative offices, as well as an auditorium that is used for classes, concerts, films, lectures, and other special events.

2009 Season Outlook Versatile Bears squad looks to improve on 10-win season Missouri State head coach Rob Brewer enters his 14th season with the Bears in 2009, hoping to improve on a 10-win season from a year ago. After finishing 3-30 in conference, the Bears advanced to the semifinals of the MVC Tournament before falling to eventual champion Evansville. Missouri State returns last season’s leading scorer in Samantha Aguilar. The Bears also add 14 newcomers, many of which can fill in at multiple positions on the pitch. “We are not lacking in talent,” said head coach Rob Brewer. “We have a versatile group of players and our strength this season will be in our numbers. Our season will be defined by the progress of the returners and the adaptability of the newcomers to our system.” The biggest transition for the Bears will be adapting to a new goalkeeper. All-time wins leader Jackie Jasper has graduated and red shirt sophomore Jessica Teahan will look to step in and fill some big shoes. Goalkeepers Teahan will step into the starting goalkeeper role after Jasper’s stellar career put her at the top of the Missouri State record books. Teahan, who saw action in four matches a season ago, will look to start for the first time since her senior year of high school. Senior Lacey Dake and newcomer Chelsea Voet provide needed depth behind

Hulcer, Nia Williams, Jeny McGrath, Alicia Chandler and Amy Patterson. These newcomers will push for playing time on defense and at other positions. “We have seven or eight players who could start on the backline for us this season,” declared Brewer. “A lot of our players could play multiple positions, which is great for our team.”

Jessica Smits Teahan. Voet comes to Missouri State after becoming the all-time saves leader at her high school, while Dake has not seen game action since her sophomore campaign. Both will be ready to step in and help the Bears this season.

Defenders The Bears return five defenders from last year’s team. Senior Jessica Smits will provide leadership on the backline after contributing three assists and starting every match in 2008. Smits was named to the MVC All-Tournament team and All-MVC second team in 2008. Junior Jordan Reppell, a first team All-MVC selection in 2008, looks to continue her dominant play. She started every match a year ago, despite playing through an injury most of the year. Junior Sarah Linsin also provides experience for the Bears after starting 16 matches and seeing playing time in all 19 matches her sophomore campaign. Junior Shannon Russell and sophomore Jennifer Hamlin saw playing time in a majority of matches last season and provide added experience. Hamlin added three assists off the bench and Russell started five matches a season ago. The Bears added depth on Samantha Aguilar defense this year with Claire

Midfielders Senior Samantha Aguilar returns to the Bears’ lineup after leading the squad in goals (7) and points (17) in 2008. A firstteam All-MVC selection and an All-Academic honorable mention, Aguilar looks to add to her four career game-winning goals. “Sam could be the best returning player in the MVC,” boasted Brewer. “She will be pivotal to our success on offense this season.” Senior Jenna Dobkins and junior Christine Cross saw action in every match a season ago and bring experience to a midfield expected to possess the ball and set up scoring chances this season. Cross scored two goals and contributed five assists for Missouri State in 2008. Sophomores Jeslynne McGrath, Logan Bisbee and Racquelle Riley saw limited action last year and will vie for playing time this season. Newcomers Grace Cross, Megan Jaskowiak, Jody McFarlen, Michelle Sommer and Kelly Caldwell bring speed

others who reached their respective state quarterfinal matches (Jody McFarlen and Katelyn Frederickson). “The newcomers bring explosiveness on offense,” added Brewer, “and their speed and versatility make this team one to be reckoned with in 2009.”

Christine Cross and added versatility at midfield. FORWARDS Sophomores Tara Bailes and Kelsey Finders are the leaders on a young forward corps for the Bears. Bailes moved up from the midfield last season to learn the forward position and added two goals. Finders scored five goals, tied for second on the team, and is the leading scorer among returning forwards. A host of newcomers bring promise and speed to the Bears offense. Rachel Weimer, Katelyn Frederickson and Becky Handley will battle for playing time and bring explosiveness to the Bears frontline.

SCHEDULE The Bears’ 2009 schedule features a diverse group of non-conference opponents. Missouri State begins the regular season with a test at Oklahoma, an up-and-coming squad from the Big 12. A week later, the Bears are at a tournament in Fayetteville to face Austin Peay and host Arkansas. A home stretch of matches against Saint Louis, Stephen F. Austin, Oral Roberts and UMKC fill the beginning of September. The Bears then travel to Lawrence, Kan., to face two NCAA tournament schools from last year. South Dakota State and San Diego will serve as tough tests before the Bears jump into conference play. “We play a number of quality opponents early in the season,” stated Brewer. “South Dakota State and San Diego were tournament teams last year and will give us a tough test right before conference play.” Another non-conference match at SIU-Edwardsville awaits Missouri State in late October before the Bears wrap up conference play.

Kelsey Finders Missouri Valley conference The Bears finished 3-3-0 in the Valley last year and will begin conference play on September 27 as they host UNI. Drake and Illinois State also visit Plaster Field this season and the Redbirds will be the opponent on Senior Night on Thursday, October 29. This season, Missouri State will travel to Creighton, Evansville and Indiana State during conference play. “I believe that we can play with any team in the Valley this season,” quipped Brewer. “We will be very competitive in conference in 2009.”

NEWCOMERS Missouri State adds 14 newcomers to a squad that showed great promise a season ago. Among the newcomers, there are three two-time state champions (Rachel Weimer and Nia Williams in Kansas and Chelsea Voet in Nebraska), two state runnerups (Kelly Caldwell and Megan Jaskowiak) and two

Head Coach Lynchburg College, 1977 122-110-27 (13 seasons)

Head coach Rob Brewer begins his 14th season leading the Missouri State women’s soccer program. Overall, Missouri State has produced a 122-110-27 record during Brewer’s tenure. The 1999 Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year has produced 63 all-conference selections and 44 academic all-conference honorees. In 13 seasons as a program, the team has only three losing seasons. Brewer led the 2008 squad to a 10-7-2 record and the conference semifinals before Evansville eliminated the Bears from their 13th consecutive trip to the MVC Tournament. It was the sixth time Brewer had reached double-digit wins in a season at Missouri State. The 2007 Bears squad ended the season with an overall record of 6-11-2 and a 2-2-2 Missouri Valley Conference record. Brewer’s squad made it’s 12th trip to the State Farm MVC Tournament and earned a fifth-place finish in the Valley. The Bears defensive line was strong, holding opponent offenses to a 0.81 goals-against average. Missouri State suffered a tough offensive drought, scoring the lowest number of goals (16) and points (43) in Missouri State history in a single season. In 2006, Brewer and the Bears’ program celebrated their 100th win with a 2-1 overtime victory over Alabama A&M on Sept. 8 at the Arkansas Lady Razorback Classic. The squad had many highs and lows. The team’s six-match winning streak from Sept. 1-17 tied a school record for consecutive victories. The Bears would win only three of their last 12 matches, however, to finish 10-9-2. MSU rebounded to avenge a regular season loss to Illinois State by knocking off the Redbirds in the first round of the MVC Tournament in Normal. A 1-0 overtime loss to MVC champion Drake ended the Bears’ season. The 2005 Bears ended the season with an overall record of 9-4-5 and a 3-1-2 Missouri Valley Conference record. Brewer made his 10th consecutive trip to the State Farm MVC Tournament and landed a third-place finish in the Valley. With the finish, the Bears matched the best regular season finish in MSU school history. In 2004, the Bears finished with an overall record of 9-4-4 and a 3-2-2 record in the MVC, finishing the season tied for fourth place in the league. The year also saw three MSU all-time team records set in fewest goals allowed (13), goals-against average (0.73) and fewest saves (97). In 2000, Missouri State won its first MVC Tournament championship and made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The squad finished the season 12-11-1 overall and set a single-season team record with 11 shutouts. In 2003, Brewer guided the Bears to a 9-9-3 overall record and a 5-2-0 MVC mark. The Bears advanced to the MVC tournament semifinals for the seventh time in eight years before losing 1-0 to eventual champion Illinois State. Brewer led the Bears to their fourth straight winning season at 8-7-3 and a winning MVC conference record of 3-2-2 in 2002. Northern Iowa spoiled the Bears’ chances of advancing to the MVC tournament semifinals for the seventh straight season, however, by defeating the Bears, 2-0, in the play-in game. In 2001, Brewer and the women’s soccer team enjoyed postseason success for the third straight season. After an up-and-down season, Missouri State entered the tournament as a fifth seed, beating fourth-seeded Drury in a tournament play-in game to earn a second straight semifinal game against Illinois State. Missouri State upset top-seeded Illinois State, 2-0, earning the Bears a spot in the championship for the third straight season. In the final game, Missouri State lost a heartbreaker to Evansville, 2-1, spoiling its hopes of reaching the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. In 1999, Missouri State posted a 14-7-1 record and finished runner-up at the Valley tournament after a grueling 3-2 loss to Evansville in three overtime periods. That season, Missouri State set team records for goals scored (65), assists (52) and wins (14). A 1977 graduate of Lynchburg (Va.) College, Brewer came to Missouri State after seven years at Elon (N.C.) College, where he was assistant professor of physical education and served stints as coach of the men’s and women’s

soccer teams. During his tenure, Elon made the move from NAIA affiliation to NCAA Division II in 1992-93. Brewer enjoyed tremendous success with the Elon women’s soccer team, serving as the program’s leader from 1989 to 1993 and compiling a 68-28-2 record, including four straight conference titles. In 1992, he was named the NAIA Regional Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Fightin’ Christians to a 19-6 mark, an NAIA regional championship and a spot in the national semifinals in Tacoma, Wash. In each of his first two coaching jobs, from 1985 to 1989 at Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk and from 1978 to 1985 at Roanoke College in Salem, Va., Brewer took men’s teams with sub-.500 records and turned them into winners, producing 11 consecutive winning seasons. At Roanoke, he coached current Missouri State men’s soccer coach Jon Leamy for four seasons. Brewer, who earned his master’s degree in education from Virginia Tech in 1981, was a standout soccer player at Lynchburg and competed as a high jumper on the Hornets’ track and field team. He won the school’s Outstanding Male Athlete Award as a senior in 1977 and was inducted into the Lynchburg Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. The Lynchburg, Va., native was selected by the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Committee to serve on the Central Regional Advisory Committee in February of 1998. Brewer and his wife, Karen, have two daughters, Katie and Molly.

At Missouri State: Samantha Aguilar returns for her senior season after leading the Bears in scoring last season. 2008: Aguilar was a third-year letterwinner after being named All-MVC first team. For her academic success, she was named to the academic all-conference honorable mention team. Aguilar led the Bears in goals scored (7), game winning goals (3) and points (17), while starting 14 of the 19 matches she played. She had at least one point in eight of the 19 games and converted the clinching penalty kick in the MVC Tournament quarterfinal win over Creighton. The Bears extended their lead as Finders netted the second goal of the game off a scramble play from close range.

The Missouri Valley Conference The Missouri Valley Conference enters its 103rd year at the start of the 2009-10 academic year, and the nation’s secondoldest NCAA Division I conference continues to be a leader in college athletics. The Valley continues to lead by example as one of college athletics’ most progressive conferences. The Valley emphasizes the importance of the student-athlete and is aggressive in its approach to provide opportunities for its member institutions. Even though the MVC’s spectacular streak of nine seasons with two or more conference teams in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament ended in 2008, the league continues to be one of the nation’s elite. Last year, a league-record seven MVC teams were in the post-season. The Valley has had four or more postseason bids in the same season 15 times, including each of the last six years. Notably, The Valley has had 22 post-season teams in men’s basketball over the past three seasons, with three NCAA Sweet 16 trips (Bradley, Southern Illinois and Wichita State). UNI represented the league in the NCAA Tournament, while Bradley – for the second-straight year – reached the championship finals of a post-season tournament, representing the league in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. While the success of men’s basketball has received the greatest attention, the overall performance of league teams in virtually every sport continues to raise the national profile of the conference. There were plenty of other milestones for The Valley in the athletic arena in 2008-09. For the second-straight year, the conference staged a neutral site women’s basketball tournament at the St. Charles Family Arena before good crowds, with Evansville earning the title and representing the league in the NCAA Tournament. Regular-season champ Illinois State reached the semifinals of the WNIT. The Valley had another historic year in volleyball as three league teams earned bids into the NCAA Tournament field. In

26

2007, a conference record four teams were invited to the Big Dance, while only five times previously has the league received as many as two NCAA bids. Tournament champion Missouri State was joined by UNI and Wichita State in post-season play. In men’s soccer, Creighton ran its incredible streak of consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances to 17 in a row, and the Bluejays reached the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Bluejays were joined by Drake in the NCAA field, as the Bulldogs were making their first-ever appearance in the men’s bracket. In baseball, Wichita State again represented the league in the NCAA Tournament, and reached the regional final, falling to Washington State. Over the past three decades, the Shockers have made 26 NCAA Tournament trips, with seven CWS berths and a 1989 NCAA Championship to their credit. For the first time in seven seasons, The Valley failed to send multiple softball teams to the NCAA Championship. Bradley made its first-ever NCAA appearance to represent the league and defeated national No. 15 seed DePaul in the opening game. In a season of firsts, the Braves earned their spot in the NCAA Tournament after becoming the first team in league history to win the conference tournament as the host institution, edging regular-season champ Creighton. Track and field continued to flourish in the MVC as Kylie Hutson of Indiana State earned national titles in the indoor and outdoor pole vault. The league has now had five individual national titles in the past three years in track & field. In all, 15 student-athletes from the Missouri Valley Conference qualified for the outdoor national meet, while 11 participated in the indoor meet. Tyler Mulder of UNI capped his stellar career by finishing third in both the outdoor and indoor 800-meter run; he was the indoor champ in that event in 2008. In one of the closest results in league history, Wichita State earned the 2008-09 All-Sports crown, edging second-place Illinois State by 0.06 points. The Shockers won a league-best

four titles (women’s cross country, volleyball, men’s golf and women’s tennis), while placing in the top four in 12 of 15 sports in which they sponsor. Based in St. Louis since 1985, the league is assertive in its approach to hosting NCAA basketball championship events, operating a revenue-producing in-house television network, bidding out the right to host sport championships and landing title sponsorships for those events. The success of The Valley television package is one of the great stories in the league, in terms of the clearance of the men’s basketball tournament title game on national broadcast television, the excellent national and regional coverage for basketball and other sports, and the effective sale of advertising content to more than 25 companies. The MVC Television Network has blossomed into a revenue-generating vehicle and The Valley’s most visible marketing tool. And while the Missouri Valley Conference has been progressive in pursuing NCAA events, it has continued to be a national leader in the athletic arena. And starting in 1995-96, the conference broke new ground by allowing league members to bid for hosting rights for select team sport championships. By establishing uniform host criteria, the conference is able to assist a host institution in a season-long promotional campaign and provide an avenue where hosts can acquire sponsors and achieve a profit for the event. From its early beginning to its current standing on the map of college athletics, The Valley will always continue to be proactive in its approach. League members include Bradley, Creighton, Drake, Evansville, Illinois State, Indiana State, Missouri State, UNI, Southern Illinois, and Wichita State. Eastern Illinois is an affiliate member in men’s soccer, while Central Arkansas and Southern Illinois Edwardsville begin affiliate men’s soccer membership in 2010.

Missouri State National Championship Teams

Seven Missouri State teams have been crowned national champions at all levels of competition over the 99 years of intercollegiate athletics at MSU. The 2004-05 Lady Bears became the most recent team to claim a postseason national title, winning the Women’s National Invitational Tournament at Hammons Student Center on March 31, 2005, with a 78-70 win over West Virginia.

uuThe 2003 baseball Bears (above) of coach Keith Guttin captured the Lincoln Regional, then took two straight at Ohio State in the Columbus Super Regional to advance to the school’s first-ever NCAA College World Series. In 1974, the MSU softball team (right) became the first women’s sport in school history to capture a national title when it won the AIAW Division I crown.

uuJackie Stiles set the NCAA record for career points (3,393) as well as the single season scoring record (1,062) as a senior at Missouri State. Stiles won the Honda Awards Program Broderick Cup and was the Wade Trophy Recipient as the nation’s top women’s college basketball player in 2001. Plaster Field

uilt in 1941, Plaster Field enters its third season as home of the Bears. Missouri State has posted a 7-4-2 home mark at Plaster since making the move from Cooper Sports Complex in 2006. Originally named SMS Stadium (1941-70), the Bears’ home facility was renamed Briggs Stadium in 1970 to honor former head coach and athletic director Arthur Briggs. In the midst of a four-phase expansion that saw the stadium receive its first artificial turf (1987), a new eight-lane, 400-meter all-weather running track (1988) and additional seating (1990), the expanded facility was renamed Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex in 1991. Plaster Field also serves as the home venue for MSU field hockey, football and track and field. One of the top FCS football facilities in the country, Plaster seats 16,300 spectators and features 24 skyboxes and a 40-seat University box. The playing field was upgraded in the summer of 2006 with the installation of a new FieldTurf surface. The complex features 12 racquetball courts and recreational locker rooms, as well as Plaster Strength Center. The 7,200-square foot weight room is one of the largest of its kind in the Midwest.

Academic Success Achievement Center

The academic and developmental well-being of the modern student-athlete is a vital facet of the overall educational experience, brought into focus by the Achievement Center for Intercollegiate Athletics (ACIA). Established in 1996, ACIA assists more than 500 studentathletes. Associate Director of Athletics for Student Development Bryan Hicks works with graduate assistants and tutors from academic disciplines to strengthen the student-athlete academic base. Staff members work to monitor academic progress, registration and computer labs.   An ACIA emphasis is to work with firsttime freshmen and transfers to ease their academic adjustment. The goal is to develop good academic habits at the beginning of the MSU experience. All new athletes attend weekly meetings with an ACIA staff member. Required study halls meet five nights a week and are divided by academic specialties.   In monitoring eligibility, the ACIA has faculty representatives in each academic college to assist with academic monitoring. Staff members meet with individual professors as necessary, and the department’s compliance staff monitors adherence to NCAA regulations for all current and prospective studentathletes.

Strength & Conditioning

P

hysical development of more than 500 student-athletes to increase athletic performance, decrease the chance or severity of injury and enhance sport-specific athletics development are the goals of MSU strength and conditioning.   Strength coach Terry Sauerbry and assistant strength coach Todd Riedel supervise the 7,200-square-foot facility in the Plaster Sports Complex that is utilized by all 16 sports. Sauerbry and Christensen guide the studentathletes through programs designed to improve individual skills and overall team performance. The programs integrate all phases of development, including free weights, multijoint exercises, plyometrics, conditioning, flexibility, speed and nutrition.   The MSU strength and conditioning staff works with coaches and Athletic Training Services to develop programs suited for each sport and its student-athletes. Areas of concern in each participant are identified and a strength program is put in place to address all items with the ultimate goal of improving competitive performance.   The Plaster Strength Center, one of the largest of its kind in the Missouri Valley Conference, has eight squat racks, four platforms, four benches and four inclines. There is a full range of dumbbells, a warmup room, and a main room to handle large numbers of athletes from multiple squads.

The Bears Fund is an annual fund-raising program for Missouri State intercollegiate athletics that was established in 1981 in conjunction with the move of MSU athletics to NCAA Division I status.   The fund’s name stands for “Building Excellence in Athletics through Recruiting and Scholarships,” and the fund has grown substantially throughout the 27 years of its existence. The 2008-09 drive netted over $2.98 million, marking the 21st year in a row in which total contributions to The Bears Fund have gone beyond $1 million.   The fund is administered by the Missouri State University Foundation with additional input from coaching and administrative staff members in intercollegiate athletics.   Contributors of $50 or more during each year are recognized as members at various giving levels in The Bears Fund, and, as such, receive benefits within the athletic program, including game program recognition, newsletter, and parking and postseason ticket considerations.   Bears Fund gifts may be earmarked for specific sports or general use and the money is used to enhance MSU athletics, particularly in the areas of scholarships and recruiting. Contributions may be cash, gifts in kind of goods or services, matching gifts from employers, bequests or life income trusts and honorary or memorial gifts.   An additional fund-raising event that’s a popular late-summer social event for MSU fans is the Missouri State Auction Benefiting Athletics. Held in late August for each of the past 22 years, the auction has generated additional income for athletic uses with an evening of food, fun and entertainment.   Individuals and businesses donate goods or services for sale at the auction, and the income derived from that sale goes to intercollegiate athletics. Items available for purchase at the auction since it began in 1987 have included automobiles, a thoroughbred racehorse, country club memberships, advertising packages, travel opportunities including road trips with MSU athletic teams, furs, jewelry, sports memorabilia, and unique items such as the chance to join MSU coaches on the sidelines during varsity contests. 14 of the last 15 auctions each netted more than $100,000 for MSU athletics, and the 2006 auction set a record by raising more than $150,000.
